Abstract(s)

For many years, the qualitative approaches in psychology research have been devaluated, being promoted positivistic methods, marked by quantitative approaches of reality. It is intended in this paper to make a reflection on the method of life stories in psychology research, exploring the history of qualitative methods, their taxonomies and major milestones. We also analyzed the evolution of the number of studies published in a bibliographic base using life stories in Psychology. In this context, there was a substantial increase in the number of publications (558) in recent years, 2000-2016, when compared with the number of papers published in this area (122) throughout the twentieth century (1900-2000). It seems to us that this growing interest in this method reflects the contemporary consensus on the use of various methodologies in the study of psychological phenomena, as there is a place for all kinds of research in understanding human behavior.
