  • Undergraduate Social Education Student’s Perspectives about the Profession

    Higher education institutions, responsible for training social educators, should ensure the construction of a profile marked by their technical versatility and whose socio-educational intervention is directed at all people, regardless of their situations in life. Reflection on the construction of this profile is fundamental given the difficulties of identity that the profession faces. In this context, we sought to develop a study which would allow us to identify how the students of a degree course in Social Education characterise this professional, in order to reflect on the contribution of training provided by the institution concerned and, if necessary, make the adjustments arising from the results. This is a qualitative, exploratory study, using an unstructured questionnaire applied to a convenience sample of 140 Portuguese students of the three years of a degree course in Social Education. Its emerging categorical content analysis was performed using the NVivo software, version 11. The main results point to a broad vision of the profession and are not limited to the work geared to specific populations or issues, valuing the relevance of the professional in the field of non-assistance socio-educational intervention. The main area of overlap between training objectives and students’ perceptions about practice allows the impact of training to be positively assessed, despite possible curricular adjustments resulting from further analysis, including the need to reinforce community intervention, undervalued by students, even though it plays a key role for social educators.
  • Is Christine Lagarte a transformational leader? A case study

    The uncertainty and unpredictability that characterizes the dynamic contexts of organizations environment require a strong and effective leadership. Given the different challenges facing organizations, more complex leadership responses are required. Thus, a leader’s choice is based on transferable and flexible competencies that enable all members of the organization to pursue common goals without detracting from individual interests as well as adjusting responses to changing challenges. This is the case of contingency models, where the transformational model is included. These issues have implications for the pressing issues of research and address issues such as gender leadership. However, we continue to see male leaders in mass, and in practice there are women who excel in leadership roles at the highest level. This is the case of Christine Lagarde, who has imposed herself globally, especially in the IMF. Based on the model of transformational leadership, we have analyzed the leadership profile of this French lawyer and policy, based on the content of a heterobiography of two French journalists who accompanied her during time as a French minister (2005-2011). The conclusions highlight a profile consistent with the theoretical framework used, in all its factors. In addition, more than a gender issue, the profile of competencies and a model of leadership that allows for the necessary flexibility to meet the demands of the global world seems to be emphasized.”

  • Nutritional level, health, and subjective well-being in elderly

    Literature points out the positive association between food, good health, and life satisfaction, manly in elderly. The purpose of this ex post facto quantitative study was to analyse the relationship between nutrition level, health, and subjective well-being, also exploring sociodemographic variables, in a convenience sample of 550 community-dwelling elderly. Participants were between 63 and 94 (72,85+6,56) years-old, mostly female (69,3%), from the inland (79,2%), living accompanied (62,2%) and in rural areas (67,9%). A sociodemographic questionnaire, Mini-Nutritional Assessment, Satisfaction With Life Scale, and Positive and Negative Affect Scales were used in data collection. Data analysis was performed in SPSS 27, assuming a 95% confidence level. Nutritional level was positively correlated with life satisfaction (r,- ,165, p= ,004) and inverse associated with negative affect (r,- -,308, p<,00l). Those who showed a very bad self-perception of health, were older and lived alone, presented lower nutritional levels (p<,05). Participants with health problems showed higher levels of negative affect (p<,001). Elderly with better health self-perception presented higher results in life satisfaction - (•,-271 , p<,001) and positive affect (r,-244, p<,001), contrary to those with worst self-perception of health, who were older (r,- -, 178, p<,001), with higher BMI (r,- - 173, p<,001) and also higher scores in negative affect (r,- -,217, p<,001). The results in our sample confirmed the previous relationship between the variables studied. It emphasizes the assessment of nutritional status and health education, as well as creating policies to promote the practice of physical activity in cities.
  • Student’s Perceptions of the Community Impact of Social Education Degree Internship

    Evaluating the impact of an intervention is a very important stage in social educators’ practice, since it allows them to improve the quality of socio-educational projects. The aim of this study is to rethink the internship of the social education degree through students’ perceptions about the impact of their projects in the community. This is a qualitative and exploratory study using documental analysis of 50 internship final reports of a social education degree from a Portuguese polytechnic higher education institution and whose emerging categorical content analysis was performed with NVivo software. The analysis revealed four distinct indicators linked to the project (accomplished objectives, evaluation of activities, sustainability and innovation), the target group (participation, motivation and benefits), the institution (satisfaction of collaborators, improved dynamic, routines and space enhancements), and the students (relational, reflexive and planning skills; satisfaction). It also revealed instruments, feedback, observation, document analysis and case reports as means of verification. The use of indicators related to the project’s objectives, the changes perceived from the benefits in the target-group and in the institution, and the interveners’ level of satisfaction should be noted as positive. Given the inconsistency in the use of formal assessment instruments, the results show the need to strengthen students’ mobilisation of project assessment skills in order to improve the quality of undergraduate education.

    Na senda de apontamentos anteriores no âmbito da Educação Especial e Inclusiva, projeto que emergiu do mestrado em Educação Especial – domínio cognitivo e motor da Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Viseu, convidamos, a mais um diálogo, potenciado pelos autores, através da investigação e reflexão, por estes proporcionada, na área da educação especial e inclusiva, que incide sobre a análise de atitudes, práticas e narrativas de diferentes agentes educativos a respeito da inclusão, em contextos tão distintos como sejam os da educação pré-escolar e do ensino superior.
  • Cognitive Impact Of Breakfast Consumption On School Age Children And Youth

    The literature has shown a positive impact of breakfast on cognitive performance of school-age children and youth, although this meal is often omitted by young people. This study reviews 30 previous studies, focusing on this population, published in PubMed and MEDLINE databases until September 2019. To allow the integration of the largest possible number of published studies in this analysis, the search terms had to be as comprehensive as possible. Breakfast, cognitive impact, children, and youth were the terms chosen. The main conclusions are that the differentiated effects on the several dimensions of cognition (attention, memory, aptitudes and school performance, among others) also depend on the variables and instruments used, on the population background and characteristics, and on the study conditions. Evidence also shows the difficult to isolate the direct effects due to the confounding variables. Despite some results where the relationship between breakfast and cognition is far from obvious, the existence of this effect (often mediated by individual and contextual variables) is clearly more evident than the mechanisms by which it manifests itself. So, scientific evidence plays a crucial role in the search for the ideal breakfast and to prove the importance of making breakfast a vital daily habit. Studies point to a greater visibility of consequences in processes that are more likely to trigger short-term influences.

    É no referencial de educação inclusiva que se enquadra o quarto volume do e-book “Apontamentos de Educação Especial e Inclusiva @2022”, constituindo uma iniciativa no âmbito do curso de Mestrado em Educação Especial – domínio cognitivo e motor, da Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Viseu. Está orientado para a pesquisa e intervenção no domínio da educação especial e inclusão, numa abordagem que valoriza o desenvolvimento da autonomia e a participação de crianças/jovens e adultos com necessidades específicas nos seus contextos sociais de vida.
  • Entrepreneurship in higher education students of the social area

    In higher education (IE), entrepreneurship education traditionally occurs in areas of the business world (economics, management). The uncertainty of the labor market requires an entrepreneurial profile, also in the social area. Innovation is increasingly necessary in a social context and the promotion of creativity and design-thinking in the creation of business ideas in these students is crucial. 41 students, 97.5% female, finalists of the Social Education degree, explored their own job creation. An ad hoc questionnaire was used, and responses were submitted to content analysis. The majority (92.6%) showed interest in starting a new company and the others were motivated to innovate existing companies. The investment intention focused on supporting elderly in the community (32.6%) or in institutions (10.8) and people with disabilities (21.7%). Support for the community in general and for minority groups emerged with 10.8% each. The development of community intervention projects and home support services registered, respectively, 46.3% and 36.5%. The majority of students intend to support the business through foreign capital, namely bank loans (41.4%). With less representativeness, own capital (eg anticipation of unemployment benefits - 12.1%) emerged and 36.5% of students did not anticipate the financial support of creating their own jobs. The results are encouraging in relation to students with signs of entrepreneurship in less common areas (social area). Doubts about financial support may result from less investment in these students, highlighting an important path to be taken by higher education institutions.
