- An integrative model of consumers' intentions to purchase travel onlinePublication . Amaro, Suzanne; Duarte, PauloGrounded in the Theory of Reasoned Action, the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the Technology Acceptance Model and on the Innovation Diffusions Theory, this study proposes and empirically tests an integrated model to explore which factors affect intentions to purchase travel online. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling was conducted to assess the hypotheses. The empirical results, obtained in a sample of 1732 Internet users, indicate that intentions to purchase travel online are mostly determined by attitude, compatibility and perceived risk. The theoretical contributions of this study and the practical implications are discussed and future research directions are detailed.
- Determinants of intentions to use a pilgrimage app: a cross-cultural comparisonPublication . Amaro, Suzanne; Duarte, Paulo Alexandre de Oliveira; Antunes, AngelaThe main aim of this study is to examine which features pilgrims from six nationalities walking the Camino de Santiago most value in a pilgrimage app and to determine which ones most influence intentions to use it. Data were collected through an online questionnaire. The 911 responses were analysed using ANOVA and PLS-SEM. The features related to general information are the strongest predictor of intentions to use a pilgrimage app and there is only one significant difference among nationalities regarding the determinants of intentions to use it. The findings of the study are useful for the development of pilgrimage apps.
- Erasmus students in Portugal: from students to tourists and advocatesPublication . Amaro, Suzanne; Barroco, Cristina; Martins, Carmen; Antunes, JoaquimAlthough there are several studies examining the benefits of the Erasmus student mobility programme on student’s professional career and academic development, there is scarce literature focusing on how they are similar to tourists and can promote tourism in the country where they did Erasmus. This study interviewed 16 students from 10 different nationalities that have done Erasmus in Portugal, in order to examine their travelling behaviours and how they may contribute in promoting Portugal. The findings reveal that Erasmus students are similar to tourists, contributing to Portugal’s Tourism not only by their travelling behaviour, but also by the visitors they receive and because of the posts of Portugal on social media. Furthermore, after their Erasmus experience, they become advocates, recommending Portugal to family and friends.
- Social media use for travel purposes: a cross cultural comparison between Portugal and the UKPublication . Amaro, Suzanne; Duarte, PauloSocial media plays an important role in travelers’ planning and decisionmaking. Research has highlighted that the use of social media on travel planning may differ among countries, whereas culture may explain those differences. This article explores the use of social media for travel and compares United Kingdom and Portuguese citizens based on Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Results revealed that travelers from both countries use social media essentially before travelling yet, some differences were found regarding the use after traveling and between social media consumption and creation. Travel marketers can use this knowledge to adapt social media strategies to country specific situations.
- Travel content creation: The influence of travelers’ innovativeness, involvement and use of social mediaPublication . Ribeiro, Henrique; Amaro, Suzanne; Seabra, Cláudia; Abrantes, José LuísPurpose – The purpose of this study is to examine factors that affect the likelihood to create travel content online. Research has shown that there are far more people consuming social media than generating it. However, online travel marketers need to pay attention to travelers that share their experiences online, as they have the potential to drive sales. Design/methodology/approach – An online survey was conducted to collect data for this study, by sending e-mail invitations to colleagues, students, personal contacts and other email contacts composed of Portuguese Internet users. A total of 244 complete responses were considered valid to test the hypotheses through partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings – The results reveal that travelers’ level of involvement with tourism products, innovativeness and use of social media directly influences writing reviews about travel experiences online. Research limitations/implications – First, the data used in this study were based on a convenience sample containing only the Portuguese population. Therefore, generalization of the results should be made with caution. The replication of this study in other countries would be desirable. Second, the study used a quantitative approach to examine the effect of personal characteristics on travel content creation. A research using also a qualitative approach could shed new light on the understanding of the research hypotheses. Practical implications – This study provides useful insights for travel social media websites and travel-related organizations, as they can adapt their marketing strategies to the type of travelers that are more likely to write about the travel services that they offer online. Originality/value – From a theoretical perspective, there are few studies that focus on the personal characteristics of travelers that create content online. The intention of this study is to help close this gap, providing useful insights with respect to this matter.
- Travellers’ intention to purchase travel online: integrating trust and risk to the theory of planned behaviourPublication . Amaro, Suzanne; Duarte, PauloThis study aims to determine which factors influence travellers’ intentions to purchase travel online by proposing and empirically testing a new model grounded on the theory of planned behaviour. In order to validate the model, a web-based questionnaire was applied and a total of 1732 valid responses were obtained. The findings show that attitudes, perceived risk, and perceived behavioural control have significant effects on intentions to purchase travel online. However, contrary to what was expected, neither trust nor the influence of others seems to directly affect intentions to purchase travel online. Finally, the paper discusses the findings with the implications for theory and practice and makes several suggestions for future research.
