- Abuse and maltreatment in the elderlyPublication . Martins, R.; Neto, Maria João; Andrade, Ana; Albuquerque, CarlosIntroduction: The aging population is increasing worldwide, but the abuse and mistreatment in the elderly (often silenced forms) has also been increasing, with strong implications for their quality of life. Objective: To identify forms of abuse and ill-treatment in the elderly, as well as the determinants of these abuses. Methodology: This is a quantitative study, of the non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional type attended by 135 Portuguese elderly. It uses the Family APGAR Scale and the Question to Elicit Elder Abuse (QEEA), which was applied between January and June 2013, in the elderly residing in the central of Portugal. Results: The data shows that 23.5% of the elderly have suffered some kind of abuse, these being especially of the emotional kind and neglect. We also found that the most abused elders were unmarried and widows, those who had lower academic qualifications, those who reported feeling lonely and less healthy and even those who perceive to integrate families with some degree of dysfunction. Conclusion: We found that the abuse and mistreatment are present in the everyday life of many seniors and are a difficult subject to approach. The evidence, invite us to reflect on the development of intervention strategies, particularly at the levels of emotional abuse, neglect, promotion of health and family functioning in order to contribute to the reduction or extinction of abuse and ill-treatment in the elderly.

- Musculoskeletal disorders in adolescents: a study on prevalence and determining factors.Publication . Martins, Rosa; Carvalho, N.; Albuquerque, Carlos; Andrade, Ana; Campos, Sofia; Batista, S.; Dinis, A.Objective: To identify the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in adolescents, and to analyze this prevalence relationship with sociodemographic, anthropometric and contextual variables. Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive/relational study with quantitative approach was conceptualized, involving 632 adolescents with mean age of 13.36 from six school groups from Central and North Portugal. Data collection protocol included questions of sociodemographic, anthropometric and contextual nature, and also the “Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire” to assess musculoskeletal disorders. Results: Data showed that 47.4% of adolescents mentioned musculoskeletal disorders within the last 3 months, located in the shoulders (27.8%), dorsal region (25.3%), thigh/hips (26.1%), neck (23.4%), lumbar region (22.8%), and knees (19.6%). We found that musculoskeletal disorders are more prevalent in female adolescents, and among those who spend longer time watching television per day, and also those who go to school by foot or bicycle. Conclusion: The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in adolescents is high and has multicausal origin, turning imperative the implementation of preventive and readapted actions to promote a better musculoskeletal function.
- Musculoskeletal injuries in musical arts professional : prevalence and determinantsPublication . Martins, Rosa; Andrade, Ana; Martins, Conceição; Albuquerque, Carlos; Sales, TeresaBackground: Musculoskeletal injuries related to the work of professional musicians constitute a real public health problem. Objectives: To identify the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in professional musicians practicing plucked string instruments and to analyze their relationship with sociodemographic variables, health status and characteristics of instrumental practice. Methods: This was a non-experimental correlation, descriptive and quantitative character study, involving 140 Portuguese musicians living in 3 cities from Portugal, aged 18 to 55 years old. A questionnaire was used that included variables of sociodemographic characterization, health / style and musical practice. For the evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders we used the “Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire”. Results: Of the musicians studied, 70.0% reported musculoskeletal disorders (MI) that manifested as pain / tingling / numbness in the last 12 months, mainly in the wrists / hands (68.6%) and shoulders (54.3%), We found that MI were more frequent in older musicians with higher Body Mass Indexes, those who consumed alcoholic beverages and did not practice physical activity, those who had excessive performances, those who used heavier instruments and took fewer breaks. Conclusions: The prevalence of MI in Portuguese musicians of plucked string instruments is high (70%) and these are related to individual characteristics, life styles and instrumental practice demands, which is urgent to modify through preventive measures.
- Perception of informal caregivers on planning for the discharge of hospitalised elderly patientsPublication . Martins, Rosa; Rodrigues, Ana; Albuquerque, Carlos; Andrade, Ana; Martins, ConceiçãoUnderstanding the perception of the Informal Caregivers (IC) about the planning of the discharge of hospitalised elderly patients with dependency, allows Nurses to identify their needs and to help them more effectively so as to provide care at home. Thus, it is intended to know the perception of the informal caregivers about the planning of hospital discharge of the elderly patients and to analyse determinant variables in that sense. The study is quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational, using a non-probabilistic sample for convenience, consisting of 41 ICs of elderly patients hospitalised in a Hospital Centre of Southern Portugal. A questionnaire was used for sociodemographic and clinical characterization, as well as the scales of Barthel, Hospital Anxiety and Depression and Planning of the Discharge (PREPARED). 73.17% of the ICs were female, married (78%), professionally active (62.7%), children of elderly parents (52.2%) and with a mean age of 78.78 years. The majority (82.9%) resides with the elderly patient and provides care between 3 and 6 months (58.5%). The perception of the ICs in the planning of discharge is positive (65.9%), especially in daily living activities. However, they feel that they are not adequately trained. The presence of the formal network support significantly influences the perception in the planning of discharge (p=0.000), in which gender, the family household and the degree of dependence are predictive variables of perception (p=0.000). Results show the importance of a better discharge preparation on behalf of the Nurses to the IC, in order to provide a better integration of the elderly patient in the family and the search for a better quality for the elderly and caregivers.
- Reiki complementary therapy in nursing practicePublication . Martins, Rosa; Cunha, Cristina; Andrade, Ana; Albuquerque, Carlos; Cunha, MadalenaReiki is a therapy performed by placing hands on specific points in the body and using energy transfer to provide a natural well-being. The Nursing also presents within its specific interventions, an essential part based on the touch to the person to whom it cares, being therefore important to have correct knowledge on these techniques. Thus the study intends to evaluate the knowledge that the nurses have about Reiki and to identify determining factors in this knowledge. It is a cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study, carried out in a non-probabilistic sample by convenience, consisting of 49 nurses with a mean age of 38.96 years, working in health institutions in the central region of Portugal to whom was applied a questionnaire to evaluate knowledge about Reiki, which was developed for this purpose by the researchers. We found that 59.1% of the Nurses had reasonable knowledge, 38.6% had high knowledge and only 2.3% had low knowledge. Knowledge was higher in nurses who had already received Reiki treatment (p = 0.032) who had differentiated care (p = 0.019) who were holders of the master degree (0.040) and had a higher professional category (p = 0.016). We conclude that the knowledge of nurses about Reiki is moderately positive and these are clearly superior in the group that performs functions in differentiated care when compared to those of primary care. On the other hand we found several factors that correlate with this knowledge and on which it is important to intervene in order to improve knowledge
- Stress and burnout in special education teachersPublication . Martins, Rosa; Andrade, Ana; Albuquerque, Carlos; Cunha, MadalenaAbstract: Background: Duties that teachers are required to perform in the current social context require personal skills which cannot be limited to knowledge accumulation. Teachers related to special education are subject to such pressure, demands and psychological overload that it can result in serious cases of stress and burnout. Objectives: assessing stress and burnout in special education teachers and find out to what extent socio-demographic and psychosocial variables have a significant effect on those levels. Method: Study of quantitative, cross-cutting and descriptive-correlational nature. It is a non-probability sampling based on convenience, composed of 90 teachers, linked to special education in Portugal. The research protocol includes questions of socio-demographic, professional and health characterization, as well as two scales: one which assesses stress and burnout levels (CPB-R) and another which assesses self-efficacy (SES). Data collection took place between January and June 2014, and statistical treatment of data was based on SPSS software 19.0. Outcomes: The sample is mainly composed of females, married, holding a bachelor’s degree and with a mean age of 46 years old. Stress affects 80% of teachers, who feel lack of recognition for their work (64.4%) and professional fulfilment (55.6%). Although overall burnout (35.6%) and emotional exhaustion (48.9%) were identified, they strike a lower number of teachers. Stress and burnout levels are higher in older and divorced teachers who teach students in lower secondary education, with a weekly working time of 22/25 hours and perception of low efficacy. Evidence showed that teacher’s stress and burnout is variable and multidimensional. Nonetheless, it affects a significant number of special education teachers, which invites us to implement intervention programs on this professional group.
