- Sheep Grazing Management in the Mountain Region: Serra da Estrela, PortugalPublication . - Selecting talent using social networks: A mixed-methods studyPublication . Melão, Nuno; Reis, J.Previous studies on the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS) in personnel selection generally focus on examining this phenomenon in the selection process as a whole. However, personnel selection is a macro-process composed of several activities. This paper aims to investigate how human resource professionals use SNS in hiring decisions during the different stages of the selection process. The research uses an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach. The first study consisted of a questionnaire-based survey of hiring professionals with the intent to describe various aspects of current practice (n ¼ 429). Survey data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The second study comprised semi-structured interviews with hiring professionals to provide a more indepth, richer analysis (n ¼ 24). Interview data was analyzed via qualitative thematic analysis. Results uncovered two types of users. Single-stage users emphasized efficiency concerns, whereas multiple-stage users mentioned to access profiles on an as needed-basis. Participants reported that the patterns of use could be quite complex and dynamic, with selectors revisiting the profile of the same applicant several times for different purposes, or examining profiles of the same applicant in different SNS. The assessment of SNS information is typically nonsystematic, but some employers reported using scales, mainly in pre-selection. Evidence emerged of potential adverse effects during the selection process. Overall, this paper contributes to theory and practice by providing a better understanding of the use of SNS across the different stages of personnel selection. To our best knowledge, this is the first mixed-methods study of its kind.
- Airbnb research: an analysis in tourism and hospitality journalsPublication . Andreu, Luisa; Bigne, Enrique; Amaro, Suzanne; Palomo, JesúsPurpose – The purpose of this study is to examine Airbnb research using bibliometric methods. Using research performance analysis, this study highlights and provides an updated overview of Airbnb research by revealing patterns in journals, papers and most influential authors and countries. Furthermore, it graphically illustrates how research themes have evolved by mapping a co-word analysis and points out potential trends for future research. Design/methodology/approach – The methodological design for this study involves three phases: the document source selection, the definition of the variables to be analyzed and the bibliometric analysis. A statistical multivariate analysis of all the documents’ characteristics was performed with R software. Furthermore, natural language processing techniques were used to analyze all the abstracts and keywords specified in the 129 selected documents. Findings – Results show the genesis and evolution of publications on Airbnb research, scatter of journals and journals’ characteristics, author and productivity characteristics, geographical distribution of the research and content analysis using keywords. Research limitations/implications – Despite Airbnb having a history of 10 years, research publications only started in 2015. Therefore, the bibliometric study includes papers from 2015 to 2019. One of the main limitations is that papers were selected in October of 2019, before the year was over. However, the latest academic publications (in press and earlycite) were included in the analysis. Originality/value – This study analyzed bibliometric set of laws (Price’s, Lotka’s and Bradford’s) to better understand the patterns of the most relevant scientific production regarding Airbnb in tourism and hospitality journals. Using natural language processing techniques, this study analyzes all the abstracts and keywords specified in the selected documents. Results show the evolution of research topics in four periods: 2015-2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019
- Psychometric Properties of the CASP-12 Scale in Portugal: An Analysis Using SHARE DataPublication . Rodríguez-Blázquez, Carmen; Ribeiro, Oscar; Ayala, Alba; Teixeira, Laetitia; Araújo, Lia; Forjaz, Maria JoãoThe purpose of this study is to assess the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Control, Autonomy, Self-realization, and Pleasure (CASP)-12 scale used in the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) project. Data were obtained from a representative sample of 1666 people aged ≥50 years living in Portugal and participating in the SHARE wave 6. In addition to the CASP-12 scale, sociodemographic data and health status, activity limitation (GALI), depression (Euro-D) and satisfaction with life scores were collected. Data quality and acceptability, construct and structural validity and internal consistency of the CASP-12 scale were analyzed. A Rasch analysis was also performed. CASP-12 total score (mean: 33.3; standard deviation: 5.8, range: 12–48) correlated with Euro-D (−0.57) and with life satisfaction (0.52). Mean scores were significantly lower for women, people aged ≥75 years and those with activity limitations and worse health status (p < 0.001). The confirmatory factor analysis showed good fit to the 4-factor model (root mean squared error of approximation (RMSEA): 0.07; comparative fit index (CFI): 0.90, χ2 (48) = 444.59, p < 0.001), which was confirmed by Rasch analysis (χ2 (36) = 10.089, p = 0.745, person separation index (PSI) = 0.722 for the 4-factor model). For domains, person separation index ranged 0.31–0.79 and Cronbach’s alpha, 0.37–0.73. In conclusion, the Portuguese version of the CASP-12 scale presents some inadequacies in acceptability, internal consistency and structural validity.
- Optimization of Infrared-convective Drying of White Mulberry Fruit Using Response Surface Methodology and Development of a Predictive Model through Artificial Neural NetworkPublication . Golpour, Iman; Kaveh, Mohammad; Amiri Chayjan, Reza; Guiné, RaquelA comparative approach was carried out between artificial neural networks (ANNs) and response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the drying parameters during infrared–con- vective drying of white mulberry. The drying experiments were performed at different air temperatures (40°C, 55°C, and 70°C), air velocities (0.4, 1, and 1.6 m/s), and three levels of infrared radiation power (500, 1000, and 1500 W). RSM focuses on the maximization of effective moisture diffusivity (D eff ) and minimi- zation of specific energy consumption (SEC) in the drying pro- cess. The optimized conditions were encountered for the air temperature of 70°C, the air velocity of 0.4 m/s, and the infrared power level of 1464.57 W. The optimum values of D eff and SEC were 1.77 × 10 −9 m 2 /s and 166.554 MJ/kg, respectively, with the desirability of 0.9670. Based on the statistical indices, the results showed that the feed and cascade-forward back-Propagation neural systems with application of Levenberg-Marquardt train- ing algorithm and topologies of 3–20-20-1 and 3–10-10-1 were the best neural models to predict D eff and SEC, respectively. This finding suggests that the ANN as an intelligent method with better performance compared to the RSM can be used to pre- dict the drying parameters of the infrared-convective drying of white mulberry fruit.
- Blind adolescentsPublication . Bezerra, Camilla; Pagliuca, Lorita MarlenaIntroduction: Due to the transformations that occurred in adolescence, the vagueness that accompanies it and the visual impairment, justifies a study on the experience of sexuality in this population cluster. Objectives: To identify the perceptions of visually impaired adolescents about their sexuality. Methods: Exploratory qualitative study. Five (5) adolescents from a Pedagogical Support Center in Brazil were interviewed. The questions sought to obtain knowledge and the causes of their visual impairment, family composition and guidance, affective-sexual experience, level of knowledge about issues related to sexuality, among them, about contraceptive methods and sexually transmitted diseases. Results: The participants denote lack of knowledge about contraceptive methods and STDs, however, it appears that they only have superficial information. Conclusions: The results showed that visually impaired adolescents have the same characteristics of sexual development as other girls, although they have their own characteristics. It is considered that in order to generate a health promotion culture, it is essential that knowledge is made accessible to this population group.
