- A conceptual analysis of theories on transcendence in later lifePublication . Abreu, Taiane; Araújo, Lia; Ribeiro, OscarTranscendence, as a frequently described late-life developmental process, involves a variety of holistic life experiences that extend beyond time, culture, self, and others. The purpose of this conceptual analysis was to examine the shared component in the transcendence theories focusing on aging and older adults. A literature review of sources gleaned from four databases was conducted, and a conceptual analysis based on a descending hierarchical classification and a correspondence factorial analysis was performed. Fifty-four papers that included a definition of transcendence, gerotranscendence theory, and/or self-transcendence theory were reviewed. Six clusters emerged from the analysis of those definitions: (1) late life shift, (2) enhanced awareness, (3) maturation process, (4) individual experience of transcendence, (5) boundaries expansion, and (6) transcendence level. Results indicate gerotranscendence theory is associated with a mind-set shift in late-life, while self-transcendence theory is connected to the idea of growing awareness and the expansion of boundaries. The two theories share common transcendence aspects, such as overcoming ego matters, modifying ideas about death, and undergoing a maturation process. Conceptual clarification systematizes these theories, contributing to more consistent studies about transcendence later in life.

- Gerotranscendence Intervention: Insights from a Pilot RCTPublication . Araújo, Lia; Abreu, Taiane; Ribeiro, Oscar; Teixeira, LaetitiaAs the gerotranscendence theory gains visibility in the geron - tological field, activities and programs exploring its assumptions with older adults are emerging. Despite the potentialities of the existing interventions, these studies have key limitations, such as inconsistent outcome measurement, lack of randomized con - trolled trials (RCTs), and insufficient focus on long-term care (LTC) populations. This pilot study aims to present the structure and the benefits of a gerotranscendence program developed with older adults in LTC settings. Forty-four older adults (23 in the experimental group and 21 in the control) have participated in a RCT of a gerotranscendence intervention program, with six weekly sessions, conducted in four different LTC facilities. A protocol with the Gerotranscendence Scale (GST2), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used at the beginning and at the end of the inter - vention. After the post-test, two focus groups were conducted with participants from the experimental group to gather their views on the intervention and how gerotranscendence theory applied to their experiences. Although quantitative analyses revealed no significant changes in the outcome measures (GDS, SWLS, and GST2), qualitative findings provided valuable insights into participants’ perceptions and experiences with gerotrans - cendence, highlighting their redefined views on aging, the benefits of self-reflection, the importance of group dynamics, and the challenges of aging and living in LTC facilities. This study addresses a critical gap in the literature by exploring the structure and impact of a gerotranscendence program designed for older adults in LTC settings, using a mixed-methods approach.
- The Gerotranscendence Leading to Optimal Well-Being [GLOW] Program: A Feasibility Study in a Long-Term Care FacilityPublication . Abreu, Taiane; Araújo, Lia; da Costa Teixeira, Laetitia; Ribeiro, OscarObjectives: Gerotranscendence has gained recognition as an important psychosocial theory, with leading studies promoting it through intervention programs. However, to date, few interventions have involved older adults living in Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities. This study aimed to explore the viability of implementing six-week program on gerotranscendence [GLOW] in an LTC facility. Methods: A feasibility study was conducted with a group of six residents. Screening, consent, retention, adherence, and social validity indicators were considered. A Non- harmacological Therapy Experience Scale (NPT-ES) was used to assess the participation and engagement of each participant throughout the sessions. A focus group was also conducted. Results: The consent, retention, and adherence rates for the program were satisfactory (100%), while the screening rate (22.22%) was lower due to the inclusion criteria. Participants agreed that the program was important and interesting. The scores of NPT-ES were high and increased over the course of the sessions. Conclusions: The GLOW program can be considered a feasible, acceptable, and valuable tool for promoting gerotranscendence in older adults living in an LTC. Clinical Implications: Promoting an intervention rooted in gerotranscendence can be beneficial for older adults who live in LTC facilities on educational and emotional levels.
- Gerotranscendence, religiosity, and life satisfaction: a study with clergy and consecrated religious individualsPublication . Abreu, Taiane; Ribeiro, Oscar; Araújo, LiaGerotranscendence explains the psychosocial changes in later life and how one acquires a more transcendent life view. This study seeks to increase the evidence on the association between gerotranscendence, life satisfaction, and religiosity. Specifically, this study aims to: investigate whether the gero- transcendence levels of committed clergy and consecrated reli- gious (CCR) individuals differ from those of non-clergy and non- consecrated religious (non-CCR) persons; to examine if religios- ity is significantly related to gerotranscendence; and to analyze the relationship between life satisfaction and gerotranscen- dence. A total of 55 participants with a mean age of 76.5 (SD 8.9) completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and three scales, one for each construct: gerotranscendence, life satisfac- tion, and religiosity. Results showed that the CCR group pre- sented significantly higher scores on all instruments and that all correlations between scales were significantly positive. Differences between groups help to understand the importance of individual and collective aspects of life circumstances for gerotranscendence development.
- Gerotranscendence´s appraisal in Portuguese older adultsPublication . Abreu, Taiane; Araújo, Lia; Teixeira, L.; Ribeiro, OscarGerotranscendence is an adaptive theory of aging that posits a mindset shift in late life across three dimensions: cosmic, coherence, and solitude. It has been associated with higher levels of life satisfaction and well-being, and with lower levels of depression. As gerotranscendence is influenced by individual and societal attitudes toward aging, recent studies have highlighted the role of cultural factors in shaping the perception and development of the theory. This study aimed to explore gerotranscendence in the Portuguese older population by analyzing both its lay meanings and scientific evaluation. For the first, three focus groups were conducted with 18 participants aged 58 to 98 years (mean=79.5), using openended questions to explore their understanding of gerotranscendence and its dimensions. For the second aim, the Gerotranscendence Scale (GST2) was translated, adapted and validated with 215 Portuguese participants (mean age=73.84 years, SD = 9.24). From the focus groups, participants recognized aspects of gerotranscendence in their life experiences but presented differing interpretations, highlighting cultural influences. The validation process revealed notable differences from the original scale: (i) the division of the cosmic dimension into two subdimensions (cosmic connections and relationships) and (ii) the reassignment of one item from the solitude dimension to coherence. GEROTRANSCENDENCE´S APPRAISAL IN PORTUGUESE OLDER ADULTS These findings suggest that the Portuguese population perceives connections with the universe and family members as distinct categories. Participants also emphasized that connections with past generations, such as ancestors, are as important as connections with future generations, such as grandchildren. Additionally, solitude appeared to hold less significance for the Portuguese population than in other cultural contexts. As the theory gains traction globally, Portuguese researchers and practitioners need to acknowledge these cultural nuances when planning Gerotranscendence-driven interventions.
- How to Promote Gerotranscendence in Older Adults? A Scoping Review of InterventionsPublication . Abreu, Taiane; Araújo, Lia; Ribeiro, OscarGerotranscendence is a psychosocial theory that proposes older adults experience a mindset shift in multiple dimensions (cosmic, coherence, solitude), associated with different constructs, such as life satisfaction and well-being. Increasing studies are employing gerotranscendence, but the practical aspects of how gerotranscendence can be developed are still underexplored. This review involved an assessment of the size and scope of the existing literature on interventions related to gero- transcendence and their effect on participants’ well-being. Six databases were searched, and eight studies were selected: five were observational, while three were randomized control trials. Findings showed that gerotranscendence can be developed through weekly thematic encounters. Moreover, the interventions examined in the selected studies were described as having positively impacted participants’ mental health and life satisfaction. Future studies should explore gerotranscendence inter- ventions using a rigorous methodology and long-term follow-up data to add consistency to these findings.
- New horizons in gerotranscendence interventions. Targeting nursing home staff members and other caregivers: a scoping reviewPublication . Abreu, Taiane; Araújo, Lia; da Costa Teixeira, Laetitia; Ribeiro, OscarPurpose – The aim of this scoping review is to describe the published gerotranscendence interventions targeting older adults’ caregivers and their outcomes. Design/methodology/approach – Six databases were searched, and three studies were selected for analysis: one short-term quasi-experimental study and two observational studies. Findings – The interventions consisted in an instructional moment about the gerotranscendence theory and a moment for sharing personal perceptions. Originality/value – Gerotranscendence interventions can be essential for the caregivers to have a better relationship with the older adults, as they could improve their perception on their needs. Even though the interventions presented promising results benefiting caregivers and older adults, none of the studies confirmed that these changes persisted in the long term and additional studies are needed to robustly investigate this subject.
- Religious factors and gerotranscendence in later life: A scope review of empirical studiesPublication . Abreu, Taiane; Araújo, Lia; Ribeiro, OscarTornstam’s theory of gerotranscendence has been linked to multiple concepts over the years. Its cosmic dimension, which is defined as a feeling of communion with the universe, makes it easily associated to religious matters, although these are not overlapping constructs. This review examined associations between religious factors and gerotranscendence in later life, aiming to summarize the extent of available evidence. Six databases were searched for empirical studies examining such associations, and a final set of nine studies were eligible for analysis. Seven studies showed a positive correlation between gerotranscendence and religiosity; one study showed an inconclusive correlation and another a negative one. Results suggest that gerotranscendence can be linked to religious matters, especially when people can connect their metaphysical ideas. The main identified gaps in the literature refer to the lack of specification on religious factors and the non-use of instruments to evaluate specific aspects of religiosity.
- “What Does Gerotranscendence Mean to You?” Older Adults’ Lay Perspectives on the TheoryPublication . Abreu, Taiane; Araújo, Lia; Teixeira, Laetitia; Ribeiro, OscarBackground and Objectives: Gerotranscendence, a recent adaptive aging theory developed by Tornstam, postulates a mindset shift in old age from a materialistic viewpoint to a more transcendent one. Gerotranscendence is considered a promising aging model, as it approaches specific developmental challenges in late life. However, knowledge of this theory is still maturing and lacks laypersons’ perspectives to further validate its components. This study aimed to explore how older adults perceive gerotranscendence and gain insights of their understanding. Research Design and Methods: Three focus group discussions were conducted with 18 participants (59–98 years old; mean: 79.5 years). The protocol included open-ended questions on what gerotranscendence, and its dimensions meant (based exclusively on their designations), as well as on the theory’s components (after further explanation). The discussions were recorded and transcribed, and a content analysis was performed. Results: The data were organized into 2 themes: general suppositions and personal perceptions. This second theme was divided into (i) relatable thoughts and experiences and (ii) a different and complementary understanding of the theory. Discussion and Implications: Despite the lack of knowledge of the meaning of gerotranscendence, older persons presented clear evidence that this topic was meaningful for them and that they experienced aspects of the cosmic, coherence, and solitude dimensions of gerotranscendence. However, at specific points, some participants had distinctive and complementary ideas compared with those espoused by gerotranscendence theory. Obtaining laypersons’ perspectives provides a more in-depth understanding of gerotranscendence theory and the cultural aspects it may encompass.
