- Exploring symmetry through portuguese tiles in historical monumentsPublication . Rita, Paula; Bastos, Nuno; Hall, AndreiaPortugal has a rich and long cultural heritage which can be used to promote the teaching of Mathematics in schools. Geometry can be explored through the analysis of decorative art found in Portuguese historical buildings, in particular through the analysis of ceramic tile panels and facades used extensively throughout several centuries. Through the analysis of decorative art found using ceramic tiles in two Portuguese monuments, we propose several teaching activities to explore the topics of isometry and symmetry in schools. We give some examples of rosettes, friezes and wallpapers found in the monuments, classified according to their symmetry groups. We also give an example of an applied activity using GeoGebra and exploring Islamic patterns.
- Bibliographic Coupling Links: Alternative Approaches to Carrying Out Systematic Reviews about Renewable and Sustainable EnergyPublication . Martinho, Vítor: New technologies, specifically the internet, have over the last two decades increased the number of publications in the most diverse fields of science. Subjects related to renewable and sustainable energy are no exception. These frameworks have allowed the main insights produced by the scientific community through literature surveys to be highlighted. Nonetheless, considering the vast quantity of studies, systematic approaches have been proposed by the researchers to better organize and perform the literature review. Considering the subjectivity of some of these methodologies, the main objectives of this research are to conduct a systematic review about renewable and sustainable energy through more objective techniques, based on bibliometric analysis, to provide an alternative or to complement those already available within the literature. For this purpose, a “Biblio4Review” approach was proposed in order to perform systematic reviews about renewable and sustainable energy that may spread into other scientific fields. This methodology is based on bibliographic coupling links from the bibliometric analysis to identify the most relevant studies for the literature review. The results obtained highlight that with this approach it was possible to identify the studies with greater centrality in terms of references shared. In this way, they are among the most relevant documents for these topics. Specifically for the topic considered (renewable and sustainable energy) the main insights were referred to. In any case, the findings obtained show that there is a field for more interdisciplinary approaches
- Evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy in the European Union: A Policy for Different ScenariosPublication . Martinho, VítorConsidering the great diversity of agricultural realities in the European Union (EU) countries, a concern of the EU institutions has been to design agricultural policy instruments and measures more adjusted to each context, namely allowing for decisions taken more at a national level through an approach of decentralisation. However, these attempts seem insufficient to deal with the specificities of each country and region. In addition, the particularity of the EU context is the sovereignty of the several Member States that makes these frameworks different from any others. Considering this scenario, suggestions are made for a more local Common Agricultural Policy in the European Union, taking into account the requirements of different realities. To achieve these aims, a literature review was carried out, considering information from bibliometric approaches. The literature survey reveals that there are concerns with the relationships among agriculture and the environment, trade liberalisation, biodiversity and ecosystem services, Brexit, biodiversity and High Natural Value farmlands.
- Research as right, research as communityPublication . Pacheco Figueiredo, MariaIn the INCTE roundtable, the topic of uncertainties and challenges in research in education was discussed. This text summarizes one of the contributions to the discussion. It presents differents meanings of research to then focus on research as a right and how that perspective leads to a view and a practice of research as community.
- The use of information and communication technologies in religious tourismPublication . Amaro, Suzanne; Barroco, Cristina; Fonseca, PaulaThis chapter provides an overview of the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the religious tourism industry, evidencing how useful they can be in this specific tourism context, as they are in the tourism industry in general. Deconstructing whether religious tourism is conducted for purely religious motives or not is not the aim of this chapter. Instead, for the purposes of this chapter, religious tourism is a type of tourism that includes a religious site as a destination or a pilgrimage to a religious site or religious event, regardless of the traveler's motivation. The chapter highlights several uses of ICTs in religious tourism contexts and how religious sites, events and pilgrimages can be more effectively managed. Finally, ICTs can contribute to advancing religious tourism research. Indeed, tools such as tracking devices can help researchers and managers gain more comprehensive knowledge of religious tourists’ behaviors regarding, for example, entry/exit times, length of stay and hotspots for crowd gathering.

- Investigation of the Level of Knowledge in Different Countries about Edible Insects: Cluster SegmentationPublication . Guiné, Raquel; Florença, Sofia G.; Costa, Cristina Amaro Da; Correia, Paula; Ferreira, Manuela; Cardoso, Ana Paula; Campos, Sofia; Anjos, Ofélia; Chuck-Hernández, Cristina; Sarić, Marijana Matek; Djekic, Ilija; Papageorgiou, Maria; Baro, José M. F.; Korzeniowska, Malgorzata; Černelič-Bizjak, Maša; Bartkiene, Elena; Tarcea, Monica; Boustani, Nada M.; Klava, Dace; Damarli, EmelThis study aimed to investigate the level of knowledge about edible insects (EIs) in a sample of people from thirteen countries (Croatia, Greece, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey). Data collection was based on a questionnaire survey applied through online tools between July and November 2021. For data analysis, techniques such as factor analysis, cluster analysis, and chi-square tests were used, with a significance level of 5%. A total of 27 items were used to measure knowledge on a five-point Likert scale. Applying factor analysis with principal components and Varimax rotation, a solution that explains about 55% of variance was obtained. This accounts for four factors that retained 22 of the 27 initial items: F1 = Sustainability (8 items), F2 = Nutrition (8 items), F3 = Production Factors (2 items), and F4 = Health Concerns (4 items). Internal consistency was evaluated through Cronbach’s alpha. The cluster analysis consisted of the application of hierarchical methods followed by k-means and produced three clusters (1—‘fearful’, 2—‘farming,’ and 3—‘ecological’ individuals). The characterisation of the clusters revealed that age did not influence cluster membership, while sex, education, country, living environment, professional area, and income all influenced the composition of the clusters. While participants from Mexico and Spain were fewer in the ‘fearful’ cluster, in those from Greece, Latvia, Lebanon, and Turkey, the situation was opposed. Participants from rural areas were mostly in cluster 2, which also included a higher percentage of participants with lower income. Participants from professional areas linked with biology, food, and nutrition were mostly in cluster 3. In this way, we concluded that the level of knowledge about EIs is highly variable according to the individual characteristics, namely that the social and cultural influences of the different countries lead to distinct levels of knowledge and interpretation of information, thus producing divergent approaches to the consumption of insects—some more reluctant and measuring possible risks. In contrast, others consider EIs a good and sustainable protein-food alternative.
- An Advertising Real-Time Intelligent and Scalable Framework for Profiling Customers EmotionsPublication . Alves, Leandro; Oliveira, Pedro; Henriques, João; Bernardo, Marco V.; Wanzeller, Cristina; Caldeira, FilipeThe advertising industry is continuously looking up for effective ways to communicate to customers to impact their purchasing. Usually, profiling them is a time-consuming offline activity. Therefore, it becomes necessary to reduce costs and time to address consumers’ needs. This work proposes a scalable framework enabled by a Machine Learning (ML) model to profile customers to identify their emotions to help to drive campaigns. A multi-platform mobile application continuously profiles consumers crossing the front stores. Profiling customers according to their age and hair color, the color of their eyes, and emotions (e.g. happiness, sadness, disgust, fear) will help companies to make the most suitable advertisement (e.g. to predict whether the advertising tones on the front store are the adequate ones). All that data are made available in web portal dashboards, wherein subscribers can take their analysis. Such results from the analysis data help them to identify tendencies regarding the culture and age, and drive companies to fit front stores accordingly (e.g. to discover the right tones for the season). This framework can help to develop new innovative cost-effective business models at scale by driving in real-time the advertisements to a huge number of consumers to maximize their impact and centralizing the data collected from a large number of stores to design future campaigns.
