- Discussing a challenging document focused on land use: The first bibliometric analysis of Laudato Si′Publication . Mourao, Paulo Reis; Martinho, VítorWe live in challenging times on several levels, and in this context the second encyclical, Laudato Si0 (LS), of Pope Francis, published in 2015, has provided a special challenge for academics. As Pope Francis suggested in 2015, societies are challenged to modify the paradigms of life to achieve more sustainable development. LS has quickly become a widely quoted document, often used by academics. This paper is the first bibliometric research about LS aiming to analyze this encyclical and explore several works published about LS between 2015 and 2020. To this end, we studied all documents published in the Web of Science Core Collection (238) and Scopus (222) about the topic Laudato Si in-depth and analyzed them using bibliometric methods. The results show that there are scientific fields focused on studying LS in particular, namely religious sciences and the fields of sustainability and environment studies. We also observed a small amount of networking among the authors publishing about LS.
- Efficiency of the European Union farm types: Scenarios with and without the 2013 CAP measuresPublication . Martinho, Vítor; Mourao, Paulo Reis; Georgantzis, NikolaosThe European Union Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) publishes data for the representative farms of several European Union (EU) farm types, regions and countries. In this database, the published data for the farm types allow us to assess several agricultural policies. In fact, the FADN publishes data for the EU farming types and there are not many studies about these fields in the whole European context. This study aims to bring novelty for the whole spectrum of stakeholder types in these domains. The analysis of these impacts may bring relevant insights, especially, for adjustments in the design of future strategies and plans. We analyse the evolution of the EU farm types in the last two decades with significant scenario changes like two large common agricultural policy (CAP) reforms (2003 and 2013) and suggest new approaches to the design for future measures. Statistical information from the FADN over the period 2004–2018 is considered. In addition, efficiency and productivity assessments are carried out, to assess the implications of the most recent instruments of the CAP. The results show that the policy instruments in the framework of the 2013 CAP justify the use of more inputs (or at least at higher costs) for the same level of output. In fact, the subsidies given to the farmers since 2014 mask the inefficiencies underlying some farm types. A significant decrease in the total factor productivity confirmed this trend, despite positive growth rates for the total verified output for several farm types over the period.
- Forest entrepreneurship: A bibliometric analysis and a discussion about the co-authorship networks of an emerging scientific fieldPublication . Mourao, Paulo Reis; Martinho, VítorForest management has been recognized as a significant challenge for various scientific fields, namely because the difficulties in creating employment and economic dynamics in the forestry sector. Actually, it is not easy to generate more returns, in this sector, for the land owners, in addition to the production of wood after several years, depending on the produced species. In general, these difficulties lead to the land abandonment and a large set of associated problems like the forest fires. The main objective of this research is therefore to highlight the main insights from the literature related with the forest entre- preneurship, as supports for the several stakeholders, namely the policymakers, stressing the main gaps in the current scientific literature. In this paper, we have developed a bibliometric analysis through the VOSviewer software, complemented with a literature review, considering 83 articles obtained from the Web of Science (core collection) and Scopus related with the topic of ‘forest’ and ‘entrepreneurship’. We detailed the networks of Journals, Countries, Terms and Authors that have been researching and pub- lishing in the scientific domains of ‘forest entrepreneurship’. Additionally, we studied measures of social networks analysis for each case. This kind of analysis for these topics has a particular novelty, because there is still a significant scarcity of studies addressing these approaches. In fact, searching, for example, in WOS (all databases) for the topics ‘forest’, ‘entrepreneurship’ and ‘bibliometric’ we found zero doc- uments (the same for Scopus platform, considering the article title, abstract and keywords). We concluded that the recent field of ‘forest entrepreneurship’ has allowed a higher level of co-authorships and a lower level of centrality in the citations’ network. We identified, also, that there are some gaps in the scientific literature, namely related with the few multidisciplinary networks outside the forest sci- ences in these topics. Finally, we observed that these topics are related with authors who, on average, published with 9 co-authors along their career and that authors working on the most generic topic of ‘forest’ tend to have 17 different co-authors, reinforcing the characteristics of ‘forestry entrepreneurship’ as a relevant but emerging scientific field.
- Forest fire legislation: Reactive or proactive?Publication . Mourao, Paulo Reis; Martinho, VítorThe literature about forest fire legislation is extensive, highlighting several perspectives, different methodologies of analysis and considering diverse parts of the world as the basis of study. In these frameworks the discussions about the legal and policy instruments are not always consensual, what calls for more contributions in these fields. This study surveys the literature available, using the Web of Science platform and focusing on the subject of forest fire legislation. About sixty documents were analyzed covering the twenty-years period from 1997 to 2017. The objective is to contribute to the debate about this contested topic, specifically in terms of whether forest fire legislation is reactive to catastrophic occurrences or proactive, if it is sufficient for policies’ designing, if it is complementary and whether some instruments are in conflict. The literature review shows that several authors argue that forest fire legislation is reactive to large occurrences, where government focuses primarily on the extent of the burnt area rather than the forestry development. Additionally, forest fire legislation is interrelated with other aspects, including legislative instruments’ effectiveness or forest management and planning. Finally, the conflicts or complementarity among the legal documents are addressed. The findings presented here could be interesting insights for the several stakeholders related with the forest fire legislation, namely for the policymakers.
