- Eating behaviour effects on health and school performance in adolescentsPublication . Duarte, João; Pestana, Leonor; Coutinho, Emília; Amaral, Odete; Chaves, Cláudia; Nelas, PaulaObjectives: To identify factors associated with academic performance of adolescents, including sociodemographic variables; analyse the inluence of eating behaviour may have in predicting the quality of school performance of adolescents; and analyse the relationship these variables establish among themselves. Design: Quantitative, cross-sectional, analytical, descriptive and correlational, explanatory and retrospective study. Setting: 2nd and 3rd Cycle Basic School in the Viseu Municipality, Portugal, 2011-2012. Participants: Non-probability convenience sampling, consisting of 380 students attending 7th, 8th and 9th grades, aged between 11 and 17 years. Measurements: Data collected by direct questionnaire, with socio-demographic information, eating behaviour, and school performance scale (adapted from Fermin, 2005). Results: The prevalence of adolescents who do not have breakfast was 4.5%. Within adolescents with unhealthy diets, boys commit a higher of percentage food errors (51.3%) and more on 8th and 9th years (35.6%). Academic achievement is higher in girls (P < .001), in the younger students (P < .001) in those with a parent with secondary or higher education (P = .019) and students who have a healthy diet (P = .000). Conclusions: An inadequate eating behaviour and an unhealthy diet are associated with decreased school performance in adolescents. The implications at the individual, family and social level proves to be important to identify risk groups to develop prevention policies in the ield of nutrition education.
- Repercussões das atividades domésticas e de lazer no rendimento escolar dos adolescentesPublication . Pestana, Leonor; Duarte, João; Coutinho, Emília; Chaves, Cláudia; Nelas, Paula; Amaral, OdeteAbstract: Background: The academic performance of adolescents is determined by variables related to domestic and leisure activities. Objective: To identify variables related to domestic and leisure activities that influence the academic performance of adolescents. Methodology: Observational quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational, explanatory and retrospective study, using a non-probabilistic sample intended for convenience, consisting of 380 adolescents with an average age of 13.5 years (± SD 1:56). Results: Adolescents who collaborate with the family in household activities show better academic performance (p = 0.014). The daily time engaged in leisure activities, as computer use (p = 0.05), video watching (p = 0.021) and the use of games on PC or game consoles (p = 0.011), if over an hour, has negative repercussions on the academic performance of adolescents. Conclusion: Domestic activities positively influence the adolescents school performance, while leisure activities like computer use, watching videos and playing games on computers or game consoles have a negative impact, when occupying more than one hour per day.
- Saúde Escolar em Construção: Que Projetos?Publication .
- Sleep and academic performance of Portuguese teenagersPublication . Pestana, Leonor; Duarte, João; Coutinho, Emília; Nelas, Paula; Chaves, Cláudia; Amaral, OdeteAbstract: Sleep has numerous important functions in the body, such as consolidation of memory, concentration and learning. Changes in sleep cycles in adolescents lead to sleep deprivation with consequences to academic performance. Our research question was What are the sleep habits that influence school performance (study environment, study planning, study method, reading skills, motivation to study, overall school performance) in adolescents? We aimed to identify sleep habits predictors of the quality of school performance in adolescents. Research Methods: Crosssectional analytical study. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire with socio-demographic questions, sleep habits and school performance scale. The sample consisted of 380 students between 7th and 9th grade, with an average age of 13.56 ± 1.23 years in the school year 2011/2012, from a 2nd and 3rd Cycle Basic School of the municipality of Viseu, Portugal. Findings: School performance in adolescents was associated with better subjective quality of sleep (p=0.000), with longer sleep duration (p=0.000), with watching tv/video before sleep (p=0.000), with the habit of studying before bedtime (p=0.012), with no computer use (p=0.013) and with reading habits before bed (p=0.000). School performance was also associated with adolescents who reported not feeling sleepy during class. The teenagers who sleep more and better, and who watch tv/video, study, do not use computers, and who read before going to bed, have a better school performance.
- Sociodemographic variables determine the academic performance of adolescentsPublication . Pestana, Leonor; Duarte, João; Coutinho, EmíliaProblem Statement: It is important to have a holistic approach to student learning, sustained in a multidisciplinary approach, in which socio-demographic factors and lifestyles may relate to academic achievement. Research Question was which socio-demographic variables influence the school performance (study environment, study planning, study method, reading skills, motivation to study, overall school performance) of adolescents? We aimed to identify socio-demographic factors associated with academic performance of adolescents. A quantitative, cross sectional, descriptive, correlational, explanatory, retrospective study applied as research methods. Information collected by questionnaire of direct administration and school performance scale. Non-probabilistic convenience sample of 380 students of 7th, 8th and 9th years of education in the school year 2011/2012, from a 2nd and 3rd cycle Basic School of Viseu Municipality, Portugal. The best school performance in adolescents was associated with female gender (p<0.001); with age ≤ 12 years, (p<0.001); with adolescents whose parents have secondary or higher education (p=0.019). There was no relationship between school performance and socioeconomic status and area of residence. Conclusions: It was concluded that the socio-demographic variables, including gender, younger age and parental education are determinants of adolescent school performance.
- The importance of school and academic context in educational performance in a sample of Portuguese adolescentsPublication . Pestana, Leonor; Duarte, João; Coutinho, EmíliaThe school/academic context is key in engaging students in the learning process and consequently on school performance. Which academic and school context variables influence school performance (study environment, study planning, study method, reading skills, motivation to study, overall school performance) in adolescent? To assess the association between variables - school success, school environment, academic - and school performance in Portuguese adolescents from a sample of the central region. A quantitative, cross sectional, correlational study. Data collected through questionnaire of direct administration (sociodemographic, academic and school context variables and school performance scale). Non-probabilistic convenience sample of 380 students of 7th, 8th and 9th years of education in the school year 2011/2012, from a 2nd and 3rd cycle Basic School of Viseu Municipality, Portugal. Teens who have never failed (p <0.001), who live closer to school (p = 0.007) and who spend less time traveling to school (p = 0.007) are those who have a better overall school performance. A better school performance is also achieved, in the study planning (p = 0.015) dimension, by the adolescents with fewer years of schooling. Academic and school context variables, like the grade attended by adolescents, the distance they live from the school, and the time taken in traveling to school, are determinants of adolescent school performance.
- The use of psychoactive substances and adolescents’ school performancePublication . Pestana, Leonor; Duarte, Joao; Coutinho, Emilia; Chaves, Claudia; Amaral, Odete; Nelas, PaulaThe use of psychoactive substances is a public health problem. The use of these substances usually starts during adolescence and is associated with school problems, namely poor school performance. Research Questions included which psychoactive substances interfere with school performance (learning environment, planning of studies, methods of studying, reading skills, study motivation, overall school performance) in adolescents. The purpose of the study was to analyse the relationship between the use of psychoactive substances and adolescents’ school performance. The Research Methods included a cross-sectional study. Data were collected through a questionnaire which included socio-demographic information, psychoactive substances and a school performance scale (adapted from Fermin, 2005). Non-probability sampling for convenience, with 380 students from 7th, 8th and 9th grade. Data were collected in 2011/2012 among students from a Basic School in the Portuguese Municipality of Viseu. Results: There was a 4.2% of prevalence of drug use: 4,3% in boys and 4.1% in girls. For both genders, the most commonly used drugs were hashish and marijuana (43.8%). Girls (p<0.001), younger students (p<0.001), those whose parents graduated from high-school or who have a higher education (p=0.019) and students who do not use drugs (p=0.000) do better in school. We concluded that drug abuse is associated with adolescents’ poorer school performance. It is therefore important to identify risk groups and develop policies to prevent youngsters from using psychoactive substances because of the major impact they have on individual, family and social levels.
- Tobacco consumption in adolescents and school performancePublication . Coutinho, Emília Carvalho; Pestana, Leonor; Duarte, João Carvalho; Amaral, Odete; Nelas, Paula; Chaves, Cláudia; Parreira, Vitória CastroObjectives: To determine the percentage of adolescent smokers, identify the sociodemographic variables, predictors of school performance of adolescents and analyse the relationship between tobacco use and school performance. Design: Quantitative, analytical, cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational, explanatory and retrospective study. Setting: 2nd and 3rd Cycle Basic School in the Viseu Municipality, Portugal, 2011-2012. Participants: Non-probability convenience sampling, with 380 students from the 7th, 8th and 9th grades, aged between 11 and 17 years. Measurements: Data collected by questionnaire with socio-demographic information, smoking behaviour, and school performance scale (adapted from Fermin, 2005). Results: The prevalence of adolescents who smoke was 12.4%. Daily smokers are more boys than girls (55%) and over the age of 15 years (47.81%). Academic achievement is higher in girls (p < 0.001), the younger students (p < 0.001), and in those with a parent with secondary or higher education (p = 0.019) and students who do not smoke (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Tobacco use is associated with decreased school performance. It is important to identify risk groups and develop prevention policies, starting in the school, in the ield of addictive behaviour, due to impacts at the individual, family, school and social level. © 2016 Elsevier España, S.L.U. - Trabalho colaborativo de Professores nas disciplinas de Matemática e Língua PortuguesaPublication . Menezes, Luís; Leitão, Isilda; Pestana, Leonor; Laranjeira, IsabelThe main results obtained in research project Trabalho Colaborativo de Professores nas Disciplinas de Matemática e Língua Portuguesa are presented in this paper. It was developed by four fifth and sixth-year teachers and a university teacher over a period of a year. The project was guided by two great objectives: (i) to increase professional collaboration between teachers of Mathematics and Portuguese; (ii) to promote the development of and integrated vision of the curriculum in these teachers’ students particularly in the disciplines of Mathematics and Portuguese. The data obtained suggest that: teachers took important steps in their professional development, especially in their availability to collaborate with colleagues. The students felt changes in their practices in both disciplines. These changes turned out to be important in creating another vision of the role of each discipline in their learning.
