- The influence of population aging in public healthPublication . Veiga, Nélio; Couto, Patrícia; Fernandes, Adélia; Oliveira, Alexia; Gomes, Daniela; Santos, Daniela; Amaral, Odete; Pereira, Carlos; Pereira, Pedro; Coelho, InêsIntroduction Population aging is one of the greatest challenges in contemporary public health. Thus, one of the consequences of this dynamic is a greater demand for health services. The aim of the present research consists in explaining the main topics that justify the fact that the increase of population-aging worldwide influences public health strategies applied. Materials and methods To carry out this review article the search strategies included electronic databases, such as PubMed, Cochrane Library and Science Direct, reference lists of articles, and selected textbooks. Articles and textbooks used in this study were mainly reached by using the following keywords: “Public health”; “Population-ageing “; “Global Aging”; “Elderly” and “Health”. Selection criteria included articles published from 1985 to the present year of 2018. At the end of the search, 11 scientific articles were selected. Results and Discussion The physical / biological, psychological and social changes associated with the elderly leads to decrease of health, withdrawal from the labor market and several unfavorable situations, which cannot be controlled. In this context, the elderly seek to find support in the family, neighborhood, friends and institutions that will influence their quality of life. Therefore, the path of Public Health has three essential points: first, health promotion and primary prevention, which requires a lot of health education to develop healthy living habits and improve understanding of the aging process; secondly, appropriate health treatments, including professionals trained in Geriatrics and Gerontology, aiming at early diagnosis and interdisciplinary administration of diseases, seeking to preserve functional capacity; and finally, the rehabilitation of the functions committed, aiming at functional independence and mental autonomy, in any type of incapacity or limitation. Conclusions Aging is a challenge to be integrated by Public Health and the vulnerability inherent in the elderly should never be seen in a unique way. Thus, we believe in the importance of different forms of support, not only in terms of assistance, clinical treatment and rehabilitation, but also in the implementation of public policies and disease prevention actions, as well as health promotion of the population of integral form.
- THE SUSTAINABILITY OF REGIONS AS A CHALLENGE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION - THE PROBLEM-SOLVING METHODOLOGY IN TEACHING CULTURAL MANAGEMENT. THE CASE OF THE 'PORTO COMERCIAL DE CAMBRES'Publication . Marques Dos Santos, Paula; Santos, Daniela; Lopes, Mariana; Silva, MónicaTeaching in higher education is a constant challenge, as it requires not only permanent updating, but also the search for and implementation of the most appropriate methodologies that enable the transmission of scientific and technical knowledge to students and their training to apply abstract knowledge to concrete situations in the future profession. The project proposal we present in our paper, was developed as part of the Cultural Management unit’s assessment. Its main objective was to challenge the students to apply the knowledge they had acquired and to develop feasible proposals for the sustainability of the territory and profitability of all the available resources. Therefore, in this paper we present not only the learning path taken throughout the semester, but also the results achieved. The cultural management project proposal for the Commercial Port of Cambres that we intend to present succeeds in transforming this facility into a driving force for the development of the entire surrounding area and, through the action proposal, it will also contribute to tourism sustainability itself, creating synergies between the built cultural heritage and the natural heritage of the municipality of Lamego, located in the Douro demarcated wine region, a world heritage site, since 2001, in Portugal. We also intend to demonstrate how the construction of the cultural management project contributed to consolidating the students' knowledge of
- Waste elimination processes, from lean to kaizen in third sector organizationsPublication . Soeiro De Carvalho, Ana Branca; Pinto, António; Cesário, Carolina; Santos, Daniela; Saraiva, MarianaIn a globalized world, the challenges are many for companies and organizations. To face these challenges, organizations need to increase their productivity in order to become more competitive. This need leads organizations to look for new management methodologies and techniques. All available methodologies and techniques are an aid in business management. The Lean philosophy focuses on process efficiency and its main objective is to offer maximum value using the least amount of resources possible. Therefore, it is necessary to completely eliminate all waste (activities that do not add any value) and focus on completing only the necessary work within a certain period, so you can establish a progress of the company's processes. This article analyze the concepts and principles of these methodologies and make a comparative study between them, identifying the aspects that distinguish them and the similarities found, as well as verifying their application in a third sector institution. Third sector organizations are gaining more and more social weight, they increasingly need to achieve the much desired organizational sustainability and, for this purpose, they turn to management to perform a sustainable, effective, efficient, quality and transparent work. According to the previously developed concept of Lean Six Sigma, it was found that it is important for Third Sector Organizations, in particular, with regard to the sustainability of Organizations, as it is impactful in its various dimensions (financial, environmental and social) (Freitas; Costa and Ferraz, 2016). For this purpose, they created three pillars of organizational sustainability (financial, social and environmental pillar) and measured the influence of the implementation of Lean Six Sigma on these, having verified that the impacts are of greater magnitude in the financial and social pillar followed by the environmental pillar. The use and application of Lean and Six Sigma concepts in third sector organizations will allow for a better understanding and comparison of initial situations with the final results, in a context of improvements based on the elimination of waste and reduction of errors.
