- Dietary fibre: eating habits and knowledge in different regions of the globePublication . Szűcs, Viktoria; Guiné, Raquel; Leal, Marcela; Ferreira, Manuela; Correia, Paula; Duarte, JoãoIntroduction: Dietary fibre (DF) is an important component in a healthy diet and its consumption constitutes one tool that can be used to lower risk factors for many diseases. Objetives: Because DF has so many health benefits, this study aimed at comparing the eating habits and attitudes towards labelling as well as the knowledge about fibre rich foods and their health effects in three countries situated in different parts of the globe (Argentina, Portugal and Hungary). Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on a convenience non-probabilistic sample of 1525 participants, by questionnaire survey. Results: The results showed that the ingestion of DF was below the recommended dosages in the three countries, and people in general do not care much about the nutritional information in the food labels or the contents in DF. Internet appeared as a very important media that people use to get information about DF or healthy eating, while hospitals and health centre seem to fail somewhat on their educational role. Conclusion: In general, the respondents showed a moderate level of knowledge about the nature and sources of DF but a better knowledge about its effects on human health, being this similar among the countries at study.
- The practice of interdisciplinarity in Technological Education projectsPublication . Cardoso, Ana Paula; Santiago, Rosário; Pereira, JoséThe rapid development of technology, together with the expertise of scientific knowledge requires a change in teaching-learning methodologies in schools in order to contribute to the integration of knowledge. In the discipline of Technological Education (TE) it is customary to turn to implementing interdisciplinary practices based on project-based methodologies. Promoting the value of these practices means relying on more innovative education, dedicated to developing individuals who are flexible, critical, supportive and receptive to change in response to the demands of a society in constant transformation. To that end, we sought to discover the perception teachers, students and employers in the local community have with regards to the importance of interdisciplinarity in developing TE projects. For this, a descriptive and exploratory study was conducted based on a survey questionnaire and interview. The convenience sample consisted of 11 TE teachers, mostly female, aged between 50 and 59 years; 987 students of both sexes, aged 12 or older, attending the 3rd cycle of basic education [7th – 9th years of schooling]; and 15 representatives of employers, mostly male, taking place in four school groupings in the central region of Portugal. The data indicate that most teachers consider it very important to articulate TE with the other disciplines of the academic year, with an identical the percentage for those admitting they put it into practice a few times and those who say that they always or almost always do. They mention the transfer of scientific knowledge from one domain to another as the main advantage. Regarding students, they consider that a TE project is more interesting when it is carried out in connection with other disciplines in the same academic year and that it should favour the use of devices and the interaction between knowledge. As for employers, they are unanimous in affirming the importance of schools promoting interdisciplinary projects and all consider it relevant that schools establish regular partnerships with local community organizations. These data reinforce the importance of schools, and TE teachers in particular, in promoting interdisciplinarity together with the professional context, since this is an asset not only from the curricular standpoint, but also to train autonomous citizens who participate in community life.
- Influence of internet use on the quality of sleep of university studentsPublication . Gonçalves, A. M.; Cabral, L. R.; Ferreira, M. C.; Coutinho, E.; Duarte, J. C.Introduction: Internet addiction has been the focus of attention of some researchers due to its negative implications on both individuals and families. A study conducted by the Institute for Applied Psychology (ISPA) mentions some of the consequences of internet addiction on students, namely their academic performance and success, as well as their interpersonal relationships and sleep disorders [1]. Objectives: To identify the sociodemographic variables that influence sleep quality of students; Identify academic variables influencing sleep quality of students; to analyse the influence of the variable addition to internet in sleep quality of students. Methods: quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study involving a sample of 511 students attending higher education of the country's central region, with the highest prevalence in the age group of 17-21 years. Data collection includes the questionnaire of demographic data and academic context, the Internet will Addition Test (IAT) to Young [2] and Quality Questionnaire Pittsburgh Sleep h, validated by Duarte [3]. Results: Sample is mostly female (78.7%), prevailing students in the age group of 17-21 years (65.8%), living in urban areas (50.9%). Most (56.4%) attended the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, 36.0% are in the 1st year of the course and 22.1% the 2nd year; 59.7% live with colleagues during school; 84.5% have a single room. The male students, older (22-24 years) living in urban areas, from the area of science, attend the 4th year of the course, reside with relatives, are those who manifest worse sleep quality. With this study we notice that young students with higher internet addiction are the ones who display greater alterations in sleep quality and patterns (less sleep, more latency, less sleep efficacy and insomnia). We also verified that there is a negative and significant correlation between internet addiction and daily sleep duration. Beranuy et al [4] observed a positive relationship with sleep disorders and a negative relationship with psychological well-being, showing that sleep quality assumes a predictive and significant value for internet abuse. These results corroborate those reported by Young et al [2] where Internet dependence is shown to be associated with altered sleep patterns. In a similar fashion, Griffiths, M. D., & Szabo, A. [5] concluded that sleep duration was fewer in students with internet addiction behaviours, and also that excessive internet usage associates with an excessive daytime drowsiness. Conclusion: A good sleep hygiene is vital for university students’ success, heatlh and well-being, and considering that there is a significant negative correlation between the addition to the Internet and the sleep quality of higher education students, an intervention will be required to minimize the negative consequences of Internet addiction on the students’ quality of sleep.
- The importance of the 1st CEB teacher training to know the determinants of academic performance of students with ADHDPublication . Campos, Sofia; Soares, Liliana; Ferreira, Manuela; Chaves, Claudia; Alves, Candida; Martins, ConceiçãoIntroduction: Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an issue that affects a high percentage of school-age population. Thus, working directly with hyperactive students has become an inevitable task in our lives, as educational professionals. Thus, it has become essential to ascertain new and effective teaching practices because understanding a teacher’s role as a facilitating agent in the teaching-learning process is to understand that that role requires specialised preparation. It is in this context that our paper is based. Objective: The aim of this study is to learn whether the continuing training of teachers helps them to acquire better knowledge about ADHD children, improving their perceptions and attitudes. Methodology: from this point of view, the procedure adopted was the descriptive plan by survey. Data were collected using a questionnaire, considered the most appropriated procedure for descriptive studies. This study involved 117 primary teachers from a variety of schools. Most of them only have intial training (the number of teachers with some kind of specialisation in this area is very low). Results: After analysing the survey data, a connection between the results and teacher’s academic qualifications was made and the conclusion drawn is that the quality of the teacher’s practices goes up with the teacher training on this issue. However, initial teacher training may or may not have been developed in the area of hyperactivity. For this reason, some teachers may not be sure of their answers (particularly regarding information pertaining to the main problems related to this issue). Conclusions: The results of the study lead us to conclude that it is extremely important to get appropriate training throughout the professional career. This training can be related directly to this area or to other areas that are directly or indirectly connected to our work with the main aim of improving our intervention in school and to help the children with this pathology.
- Effects of heat treatment on the adhesion strength, pendulum hardness, surface roughness, color and glossiness of scots pine laminated parquet with two different types of uv varnish applicationPublication . Gurleyen, L.; Ayata, Ü.; Esteves, Bruno; Cakıcıer, N.The objective of this study was to investigate the surface properties of a UV-system applied on laminated parquet made with untreated and heat treated wood (ThermoWood). In this study, wood specimens prepared from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) wood were heat treated according to ThermoWood method at 190ºC for 2 hours and at 212ºC for 1 and 2 hours adhesion strength, pendulum hardness, surface roughness, colour and glossiness were determined. The UV-system was applied in two different types according to manufacturer recommendations. Results show that lightness and glossiness decreases and red colour tone increases with heat treatment. Pendulum hardness increased initially, decreasing afterwards with the intensity of the heat treatment. Tests showed that adhesion generally decreased with heat treatment. No significant differences were found for the surface roughness although a slight decrease was observed.

- Evaluation of phenolic compounds composition, antioxidant activity and bioavailability of phenols in dried thistle flowerPublication . Guiné, Raquel; Pedro, Ana; Matos, Joana; Barracosa, Paulo; Nunes, Cláudia; Gonçalves, FernandoThe objective of this work was to characterize the thistle flower in relation to the composition of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity, as well as the evalua- tion of the stability of the phenols along the digestive tract. In addition, the effect of drying temperature was evaluated and the composition in polysaccharides was also studied. For this, samples of thistle flower were lyophilized and dried at 40, 50 and 60 C. Methanol:acetic acid (98:2 v/v) and ace- tone:water (60:40 v/v) extracts were obtained and analysed for antioxidant activity, phenolic compounds, ortho-diphe- nols, flavonoids, phenolic acids and polysaccharides, using colorimetric methods, HPLC and GC-FID. The results showed that the phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity with ABTS or DPPH methods on thistle flower decreased by 20, 34 and 72 %, respectively, with increasing temperature from 40 to 60 C. The amount of compounds available for intestinal absorption decreased along the gas- trointestinal system, by 15–50 %. The presence of sugars constituent of pectic polysaccharides was observed (101.6–222.0 mg/g) as well as of hydroxybenzoic (0.19–1.26 mg/g) and hydroxycinnamic acids (1.57–5.59 mg/g). As a conclusion it was found that thistle flower is rich in bioactive compounds with potential importance for the human health.
