- Students and the internet: uses, problems and benefits during the Covid-19 pandemic in PortugalPublication . Morais, Nídia Salomé; Pestana, TiagoThe emergence of the Internet and the way it has grown worldwide is considered by many as a revolution, not only because it has changed the way people interact with the world, but also because it has become an essential part of most people's lives [1], becoming an increasingly indispensable tool in our daily lives, whether, for leisure activities, work or study, and its users are constantly increasing. In this context and taking as reference the results of the "Study on the access and consumption of online contents during periods of confinement in Portugal - the case of students from a Higher Education Institution" [2], which involved 94 undergraduate and master students, this article presents the main conclusions regarding the trends of Internet access and use during the two periods of confinement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal. In methodological terms, this is an exploratory study, using a questionnaire and conducting four interviews with students from the institution, both instruments having been subjected to a prior validation process. The results obtained regarding the frequency of access to the Internet show that the majority accessed the Internet daily and spent a good part of their days online, with many admitting to spending between 6 and 7 hours on the Internet and revealing that the activities they most developed daily were: using social networks, sending and receiving messages (WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger) and using platforms such as Zoom or Teams to attend classes. As for the type of online content consumed during their periods of confinement, the students who participated in the study showed a preference for music content (through platforms such as Spotify and Youtube), humorous content (such as watching shows, videos or podcasts), informative content (TV news and online newspapers) and also content related to watching movies (namely through platforms such as NETFLIX, HBO, DISNEY+). About the most positive aspects associated with the use of the Internet during their periods of confinement, the study participants mentioned that it allowed them to keep in touch with their friends and family and also that it was a very important tool to keep themselves informed. However, the students also pointed out fewer positive aspects, stressing that they felt several setbacks when using Internet services, namely problems related to Internet speed, the emergence of headaches caused by excessive use, and the feeling of extreme tiredness. When asked if they had difficulties adapting to platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, most of the study participants disagreed, revealing that they found it easy to use media of this nature. In addition to this, the students also pointed out that they encountered technical problems several times, and in some of these cases, they could not get around the situation, in this regard, it should be noted that an identical conclusion was also obtained in the research of [3].
- Higher education students perceptions about their blended-learning experience during the COVID-19 pandemicPublication . Morais, Nídia Salomé; Raposo, RuiThe rather uncertain short-term future, regarding the evolution of the pandemic caused by COVID-19, left Higher Education Institutions discussing which would be the suitable set of rules and procedures worth adopting for the 2020/2021 academic year, capable of stimulating as well as ensuring in-person teaching and non-teaching activities. It is safe to say that “one size did not fit all” and the study presented in this paper focused on just one of the uncountable realities that may be found all over the worldwide higher education landscape. The questionnaire-based study presented in this paper was developed in a course unit in the field of multimedia. The multimedia course unit’s class, that participated in this study was too large for the institution's computer laboratory rooms, so the students had to be divided into two practical class groups. The teachers involved in the course unit turned to various Information and Communication Technology solutions capable of supporting online learning strategies. Students inperson participation was conducted in strict accordance with the safety measures established, both at a national and at an institutional level, and was also done according to a rotating attendance schedule for the students in which students would be on campus every other week. Results showed that the equipment and the internet connection used by the students allowed them to attend online classes without any problems. Almost all students agreed that the teachers' videos and tutorials were a crucial aid for performing the assigned tasks, and online teaching proved to be adequate for practical classes
- Online course "from idea to final product": organizational, content, and methodological aspectsPublication . De Almeida Gouveia, Teresa Sofia; Ferreira, Sónia; Sobral, Filomena Antunes; Morais, Nídia SaloméThe COVID-19 pandemic has imposed unprecedented changes and challenges to the ways of learning, teaching, and communicating within educational institutions. Prophylactic isolation measures, adopted globally, have discontinued face-to-face teaching and precipitated distance learning. This reality highlighted the importance of online courses as creative initiatives to overcome space and time constraints in a limited pedagogical context. It was in this scope that the Project "Exploration of online methodologies in the development of competencies in the audiovisual area" emerged, proposing the creation of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in the audiovisual area (from the idea to the final product) and the development of the online platform LOOP for the implementation and availability of this and other courses held afterward. The project involves three Portuguese higher education institutions and one Spanish one, motivated to develop innovative proposals, both in research and education. Moreover, this network presents a diversity of training in degree courses, master's, and technological specialization programs, which allows us privileged contact with the students and helps us establish priorities and needs. This paper focuses on the survey and analysis, at the national and international level, of MOOCs dedicated to the themes of audiovisual production to expose parameters of both organizational and content scope. The methodological approach will be divided into two phases: a) identification of the criteria for analyzing courses through the literature review; b) and selection of the courses to be analyzed. This selection will be conducted through a database search, identifying the keywords in Portuguese, English, and Spanish: audiovisual online course; audiovisual free course; filmmaking course; scriptwriting course; video editing course; and other derivations. It is hoped to present a set of guidelines for developing the course related to the organization and the content.
- Social media and digital influencers on Instagram: a case studyPublication . Esteves, Daniela; Morais, Nídia Salomé; Raposo, RuiWith the emergence of social media and continuous progress and paradigm-shifting breakthroughs in new media, communication professionals need to keep up to date with what consumers are talking about online. Brands tapped into this reality and understood that to influence interactions in this digital landscape, they would need to bring digital influencers into the equation about social media. By recognising that partnerships between beauty brands and digital influencers are a marketing strategy increasingly used by brands and by resorting to Instagram as a research environment, the project presented in this article aimed to understand, through a case study, the impacts that partnerships between the beauty brand Freshly Cosmetics and several digital influencers may have on its followers in Portugal. The study was conducted during the development of a master's dissertation in Applied Communication and, despite focusing on a single brand, enabled the authors to outline the methodology that will be further explored in future work with larger samples of brands. Ten publications from different digital influencers were selected and analysed according to a set of criteria, and a focus group was conducted with ten women who knew the brand under analysis. According to the results obtained, although digital influencers have some impact on decision-making, the participants preferred brands they already knew and their opinions were formed based on research and not on digital influencers' statements. For the participants, feedback from real consumers, external research conducted on their own, and the opinions of experts in the field are responsible for the brand's image in the eye of the consumer.
- Digital learning platforms: analysis and trendsPublication . Rito, P. N.; Morais, Nídia Salomé; De Almeida Gouveia, Teresa Sofia; Ferreira, SóniaSocial distancing as a prophylactic measure against COVID-19 inevitably caused several changes in the teaching-learning processes at a global level. Among the different strategies adopted by educational institutions, remote learning was one of the most chosen options to replace physical presence. According to this reality, the demand for and the offer of short online courses, without the need to be in a particular time and place, has also become relevant. In fact, one of the highest priorities at a national level, within the higher education context, was the adoption of non-face-to-face methodologies without hindering the students’ learning activities. This context set the grounds for the “Exploring online methodologies in the development of skills in the audiovisual field” project, which, involves three Portuguese and one Spanish higher education institution, which share the same values, principles and mission and are motivated to promote innovative proposals, both in research and education. In addition, the network it presents training diversity within undergraduate degrees, masters and technological specialization programs, which enables privileged contact with students and facilitates the establishment of priorities and needs. The project aims to implement an online course dedicated to audiovisual content production, from the idea to the final product, in order to respond to the need for online training in this particular area. The project also includes the development of a platform that will support the implementation of the course. This article focuses on this last goal and its main objective is present a detailed analysis of a set of platforms currently used for online courses, at a national and international level, as well as online courses directed linked with the audiovisual field. The aim of this research is to enunciate a set of technical and functional requirements for the construction of the platform and a list of guidelines for the course development.
- Researching the Use of Communication Technologies in Higher Education Institutions in PortugalPublication . Batista, João; De morais, Nídia; Ramos, FernandoThis paper describes a research which main purpose was identifying and characterizing the use of Communication Technologies by Portuguese Public Higher Education Institutions to support learning activities. An analysis model was created and used to develop a nationwide online survey used to collect data from students, teachers and institutional managers. The results show that institutional policies and resources are in place and being used to support learning; learning management systems and interpersonal communication technologies are intensely used and widely adopted; and that there are gender differences as far as the students' use of Communication Technologies is concerned. The results of this project provide a useful insight on the use of Communication Technologies by Portuguese Public Higher Education Institutions and give valuable information for ongoing decision making processes regarding the institutional adoption and development of learning models that take advantage of these technologies.
- Concurso de curtas-metragens enquanto laboratório de criatividade narrativa - Relato da experiência académica na ESEVPublication . Ferreira, Sónia; Sobral, Filomena Antunes; Morais, Nídia Salomé; De Almeida Gouveia, Teresa SofiaNarrative art is as old as human kind and assumes itself as a fundamental element of everyday life. In this sense, since a narrative is a story that presents a diegetic universe composed of real or imaginary events, lived by fictional or true beings in a given time and space, this paper’s objective is to establish and present some thought about the video competition held by the School of Education from Viseu as a laboratory for narrative creativity. This initiative, which has already held twelve editions, integrates itself within the sphere of the institution's cultural activities and it is an encouragement space for short cinematographic creations. In parallel, it aims to stimulate the talent, the creativity and the quality of the work submitted. In this contest, the students are invited, individually or in small groups, to create a short film with a maximum duration of 10 minutes, in Portuguese or in English and authors are free to propose the theme. The genres accepted in the competition are fiction, documentary and animation. The analysis of this experience allows us to list several positive aspects, such as the added value of the academic competition of short films as a mean to motivate and encourage Portuguese cinematographic production within an academic context, as well as to allow the development of skills in filming, editing and post-production by students from different study cycles.
- Media literacy in higher education: perceptions about ethical issues in journalism among students of a social communication coursePublication . Morais, Nídia Salomé; Martins, Joana; Midões, MiguelThe project “Media Literacy in Higher Education: an exploratory study within Media Studies Students” aims to assess the degree of media literacy of students in the field of Communication Sciences, namely in terms of its ethical challenges. This article presents partial results of the student’s assessment in terms of journalism practices and its code of ethics. 72 students, from the three years of the degree in Media Studies of the School of Education of Viseu, were asked to evaluate a series of practical cases, with ethical challenges, within the scope of print journalism. The answers show that, within the first year of the course, there are some doubts regarding the journalist's behaviour, which do not exist among the other students. The lack of knowledge about the need to distance oneself from the news and the doubts regarding a possible payment to the sources of information are the main doubts of the first-year students, although, as they advance in the course, these issues are no longer visible in the answers of the secondand third-year students. In the evaluation of practical cases, all the respondents demonstrate a good critical capacity regarding the examples presented. These data align with the expected acquisition of skills and knowledge and reflect a profile at the end of the course, which shows that students are well prepared from the ethical and behavioural point of view in journalism.
