- Social Life Cycle Assessment: Relationships with the Economic GrowthPublication . Martinho, Vítort The social impacts of the economic growth processes are often underestimated, sometimes because of the difficulties in effectively assessing these implications and other times due to a scale of priorities where the economic dimensions appear with special relevance. The social life cycle assessment appears as an approach to highlight the impacts of the life cycle of the products on the social human conditions. Another question is about the various interrelationships between the social life cycle assessment and economic growth. It seems interesting to investigate how the social life cycle assessment influences economic growth and how the economic trends deal with these social analyses. In this way, this chapter investigates the several interrelationships among the social life cycle assessment and the economic growth highlighted by the scientific literature. From this perspective, several scientific documents were considered for these subjects. These documents were first explored through bibliometric analysis and after considering a literature survey for the top documents. This chapter highlights how the social life cycle assessment may contribute to a more sustainable economic development.
- Bibliometric Analysis on Era 4.0: Main Highlights for the Agricultural SectorPublication . Martinho, VítorNew realities created through contexts associated with climate change have brought about additional worldwide challenges specifically to deal with the needs of an increasing population without compromising any sustainable Development Goals. A better organisation of the agri-food chains through more efficient practices are the objectives for both national institutions and international organisations. The frameworks related to Era 4.0, namely those interlinked with Agriculture 4.0, Food 4.0 and Industry 4.0, may provide relevant contributions to these challenges. From this perspective, the intention of this study is to highlight bibliometric insights from the literature concerning Era 4.0 and agriculture. For that reason, a bibliometric analysis was carried out, considering bibliographic data, with documents obtained from the Web of Science and Scopus for the topics “agricultur* 4.0”, “agricultur* and food 4.0” and “agricultur* and industry 4.0”. The results obtained show that there are leading authors, organisations and countries in these subjects that may be considered as benchmarks for other researchers worldwide.
- Economic Growth, Sustainability Assessment and Artificial Intelligence: Combinations Among These Three DimensionsPublication . Martinho, VítorSustainability assessment, economic growth and artificial intelligence are related and these interrelationships will be narrower. The question here is how to combine these three dimensions to create a new approach that may be called as “Triple Eco-Digital Assessment”, which promotes more inclusive analysis, and considers the different dimensions associated with sustainability evaluation methodologies, artificial intelligence technologies and economic growth dynamics. In these frameworks, this chapter brings highlights about the several interrelationships between sustainability assessment, economic growth and new technologies and how these linkages may be combined. To achieve these objectives, the top items from the scientific literature were considered (taking into account bibliographic data and co-occurrence, bibliographic coupling and co-citation links). Additionally, the artificial intelligence approaches were considered for an assessment carried out to predict the costs of the farms from the European Union agricultural regions. The main highlights identified bring relevant insights for a more interlinked framework among economic growth, sustainability dynamics and the contexts of artificial intelligence
- Changes Needed for a More Adjusted Agricultural Policy in Australia: Presenting SuggestionsPublication . Martinho, VítorAustralia is a determinant country in the reality of Oceania, and this justifies the importance of taking into account its framework in this study, specifically the dimensions associated with agriculture and agricultural policies. The heterogeneity of Australian natural conditions calls for specific policy instruments, which is particularly important in the current conditions of climate changes and world economic instability. In these contexts, it seems pertinent to highlight the main Australian policy measures (to benchmark with other strategies worldwide) and to present suggestions for a design of agricultural policies more adjusted to the Australian frameworks. The agricultural policies are powerful ways to promote directly and indirectly structural and technological changes. For that, a systematic review based on bibliometric metrics was performed. As main findings, of highlighting the importance given, in terms of agricultural policy, to multifunctionality, biosecurity, agricultural governance, rural development and globalisation.
- Frameworks of Agricultural Policies in Brazil: Interrelationships with the Dynamics of Sustainable DevelopmentPublication . Martinho, VítorThe Brazilian frameworks, namely those related to the agricultural sector and the natural resources, call for special attention from the national institutions and international organisations, because of the importance for the world sustainability of the dynamics in Amazonia, for example. The agricultural policies play here a determinant role as instruments of intervention in the forest and agricultural evolutions. Considering the characteristics of the Brazilian context and the relevance of this country to the Latin America, the main interrelationships between agricultural policy and the sustainability of the landscape are presented through a systematic literature survey based on bibliometric information (bibliographic data and relatedness based on the number of references the items share). The literature shows that there is special attention on the Brazilian agricultural policies with the family farms, agroecology, sustainability, food security, biofuels and organisation of the sector.
- Life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA): Comparing outputs for bibliographic coupling and citation linksPublication . Martinho, VítorThe life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) is an important tool that jointly with the environmental and social life-cycle assessment provides relevant insights into studies about sustainability. This is true in the different economic sectors and social dimensions. Nonetheless, the literature shows that there is a field to be explored about this topic through bibliometric analysis. In this framework, this research aims to analyse the different items associated with the bibliographic coupling and citation links. For that, bibliographic data for the topic "life cycle cost* analysis" were considered. From the Web of Science platform, 1642 documents were taken into account in a search carried out on March 14, 2023. The intention is to highlight the top authors, countries, documents, organisations and sources. This study intends also to compare the metrics obtained for the two links and conclude if they are alternatives. In other words, it is important to show if it is indifferent, for this topic, to choose one of these links (bibliographic coupling and citation) to analyse the metrics associated with the respective items. Or if this choice depends on the objectives designed. The main findings highlight the top authors, countries, organisations and sources related to this topic. On the other hand, the results reveal that some metrics are equal for the two links, but only for a part of the observations. In this way, for the total of the observations, despite strong correlations between some metrics, the choice of the link is not indifferent and depends on the aims of the study. This is an important finding, highlighting that the choice of the link for bibliometric analysis is a crucial step to achieve robust conclusions.
- Soil legislation and policies: Bibliometric analysis, systematic review and quantitative approaches with an emphasis on the specific cases of the European Union and PortugalPublication . Martinho, Vítor; Ferreira, António José Dinis; Cunha, Carlos; Pereira, José; Sánchez-Carreira, María del Carmen; Castanheira, Nádia Luísa; Ramos, Tiago BritoThe literature shows that there are dimensions related to soil legislation and policy in the European Union contexts that can be better explored through bibliometric analysis, systematic reviews and quantitative approaches. Therefore, this research aims to analyse documents on soil legislation and policies, highlighting the specific cases of Portugal and the European Union (EU). The aim is to identify suggestions to improve the Portuguese and European Union soil policy instruments and measures. To achieve these objectives, a bibliometric analysis (considering text and bibliographic data) and systematic review were carried out, as well as a survey of the available soil legislation (considering qualitative data and quantitative analysis). The results show that soil legislation and policy have become more relevant in recent years and that concerns are about soil health, protection and safety, as well as risk mitigation, biodiversity preservation and the maintenance of ecosystem services. However, some topics could be further explored in future research, namely those related to multidisciplinarity, smart methodologies, soil salinisation, innovation and quantitative approaches to assessing policy impacts. This study presents suggestions that can be considered by the Portuguese and European Union policymakers to improve the respective soil legislation and policies. Defining a regulatory system for soils in the European Union has not been easy over time, although there have been attempts, given the specificities of the contexts related to soils and the reluctance of some member states to take certain measures. The approaches and analysis topics considered are innovative (there aren't many scientific documents on the topics that address bibliometric analysis and quantitative assessments with qualitative data) and bring novelty to the literature.
