Abstract(s)
A problemática ambiental constitui um dos principais desafios com que a humanidade se depara na atualidade. As transformações de magnitude sem precedentes que afetam o nosso planeta têm levado ao incremento das preocupações com os impactos negativos da ação do Homem na natureza e com a qualidade de vida e bem-estar das populações, em geral. É um assunto que está na ordem do dia, amplamente difundido pelos media e discutido, em fóruns nacionais e internacionais, por investigadores, políticos, responsáveis de organizações não governamentais, ativistas e cidadãos mais atentos. Em geral, em uníssono, têm alertado para a destruição das condições de vida do planeta e para as consequências particularmente gravosas desta situação para as gerações vindouras. Pretende-se com este capítulo prestar uma sincera e merecida homenagem à Professora Doutora Celeste Romualdo Gomes, cuja preocupação e interesse pelas questões ambientais foram notórias no estudo e na investigação que realizou em diversos âmbitos. Salientaria aqui a excelente dissertação de mestrado em Ciências da Educação, na área de especialização em Psicologia da Educação, intitulada “Educação Ambiental nas escolas do ensino básico e do ensino secundário: conceções e práticas dos professores”, que apresentou à Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Coimbra, em 2008. Partilhando o interesse por esta problemática, o presente capítulo aborda a atualidade e premência das questões do ambiente e dos requisitos educativos para lhe fazer face, em estreita articulação com a compreensão dos desafios da mudança e da inovação, no contexto evolutivo do homem e das sociedades atuais, salientando a relevância da educação ambiental no processo de mudança de atitudes e comportamentos em prol de um desenvolvimento sustentável.
The environmental issue is one of the main challenges that we, as mankind, have upon us. The unprecedented changes affecting our planet have increased our concerns about the negative impacts of human action on nature and on well-being and quality of life of our society. This subject is on the agenda today, widely disseminated by the media and actively discussed in national and international forums by researchers, politicians, heads of non-governmental organizations, activists, and more attentive citizens. They all have issued apprehensive warnings about the planet's deteriorating living conditions and its nefarious consequences for generations to come. With this chapter, it is intended to pay a sincere and deserved tribute to Professor Celeste Romualdo Gomes, whose concern and interest in environmental issues were notorious in the academic works and research that she performed in different fields. Here, I would like to highlight its extraordinary MSc thesis in Educational Sciences, Educational Psychology specialization area, named “Educação Ambiental nas escolas do ensino básico e do ensino secundário: conceções e práticas dos professors” (Environmental Education in third cycle and secondary schools: teachers' conceptions and practices), which was presented to the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2008. Sharing the same interest in this matter, this chapter discusses the timeliness and urgency of environmental issues and the educational requirements that are necessary to deal with them, while identifying change and innovation challenges, in the evolutionary context of mankind and modern societies, emphasizing the environmental education relevance in the attitudes and behaviours shift process towards sustainable development.
