Abstract(s)
Urban green spaces, such as parks, are fundamental social spaces for citizens' daily interaction and relevant indicators of sustainability and community well-being. To support the empirical study, the historical development of cities was explored, with a focus on urban transformation after World War II and the need to restructure urban spaces, highlighting the importance of the human scale in city planning. The evolution of public spaces and their impact on both social and individual communication was also discussed, emphasizing the relevance of urban parks in promoting social cohesion. Concepts such as placemaking and walkability were addressed, stressing the creation of accessible urban spaces that foster mobility and social interaction. In this context, the present study sought to examine how Viseu’s urban green parks influence social cohesion, well-being, the reduction of social isolation, and their relevance in the daily lives of the population. This was a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, with a sample of 130 residents of Viseu aged between 18 and 65 or older, using non-probabilistic convenience and snowball sampling. Data collection was carried out through both online and in-person questionnaires. The results show that participants consider parks to be spaces that promote social interaction, reduce stress, and help prevent physical and mental illnesses, thereby contributing to the reduction of social isolation. Although men visit these spaces more regularly, women reported higher averages for reasons such as enjoying leisure areas and promoting health and wellbeing. Age and parenthood emerged as predictive variables for visit frequency: older participants and those with children, especially younger ones, visit green spaces more frequently. In summary, the study reinforces the essential role of urban green parks as facilitators of social interactions and promoters of a healthier and more integrated community life.
