Abstract(s)

Abstract This Internship Report was carried out within the scope of the Post-Bachelor Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing and the Master's Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing at Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Viseu. It aims to describe, validate and analyse the activities which were developed during the internships at the Emergency Service and the Intensive Care Unit and that contributed to the acquisition of the common and specific skills of the specialist nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing to the Person in Critical Situation. In the context of this report, a research study was carried out. This research study was based on the clinical practice in an area of special interest and motivation within the scope of clinical teaching: trauma. Trauma is a medical emergency and one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity with permanent injury among the population; haemorrhage is also one of the main causes of death as it quickly leads to hypovolemic shock. For these reasons, immediate therapeutic intervention is needed to control life-threatening conditions or to avoid irreversible sequelae to the victims. Considering the crucial role of nurses in the early approach to trauma victims in the Emergency Service, an investigation, aiming at evaluating the effectiveness of their interventions in the control of haemorrhage, hemodynamic stabilization and the management of acute pain, was carried out. This way, this study can contribute to the continuous improvement of nursing care provided to trauma victims. Keywords: Nursing Skills; Critical Care; Trauma.
