Abstract(s)
This article analyses the papers published in Quadrante between 1992-2021 that focus on the mathematical processes of Problem Solving, Reasoning, Communication, and Modelling. The analysis was grounded on 102 papers associated with keywords related to each of those themes, leading to subcategories of analysis. We notice the relevance of the tasks in supporting the learning of these processes, while characteristics that should be present in their design are proposed. It becomes clear the importance of the way the teacher designs, explores and manages classroom interactions and a tension is identified between exploratory and direct approaches for teaching mathematics. The idea that problem solving is an important part of what it means to teach and learn, either as a skill, as a content, and/or as a teaching/learning methodology, is underlined, and its demanding nature is noted; several ideas are also suggested to promote problem solving teaching practice. The understanding of reasoning as not being limited to deductive reasoning and the discussion about the characteristics and/or potentialities of reasoning associated with multiple mathematical topics is highlighted; moreover, characteristics associated with proof, justification and generalization are proposed. It is also emphasized that mathematical modelling experiences can support learning, stressing the importance of using different technological tools. Keywords: mathematical problem solving; mathematical reasoning; mathematical communication; mathematical modelling.
