| dc.description.abstract | Introdução: A Esclerose MĂșltipla (EM) Ă© uma doença inflamatĂłria, desmielinizante, imprevisĂvel, de origem desconhecida e para a qual ainda nĂŁo estĂĄ disponĂvel tratamento curativo. Ă a doença crĂłnica neurolĂłgica que mais afecta adultos jovens, em idade activa, podendo progredir para situaçÔes de nĂveis variados de incapacidade. Neste sentido, o presente estudo teve como principal objectivo conhecer a percepção de qualidade de vida (QDV), de vulnerabilidade ao stress e de apoio social dos portadores de EM, bem como a influĂȘncia de variĂĄveis sĂłcio-demogrĂĄficas, clĂnicas e psicossociais. MĂ©todo: Realizou-se um estudo transversal, descritivo-correlacional, de natureza quantitativa, no qual participaram 54 portadores de EM, maioritariamente mulheres (61.1%), casados (72.2%), com uma mĂ©dia de 42 anos, empregados (37.0%), com uma mĂ©dia de idade no inĂcio da doença de 33 anos. Para mensuração das variĂĄveis utilizaram-se os seguintes instrumentos: QuestionĂĄrio sĂłcio-demogrĂĄfico/clĂnico, Escala da Esclerose MĂșltipla e Qualidade de Vida, Ăndice de Barthel, Escala de Vulnerabilidade ao Stress e Escala de Apoio Social. Resultados: No Ăąmbito das variĂĄveis socio-demogrĂĄficas e clĂnicas sĂŁo os portadores de EM entre os 20 e os 31 anos, empregados, com menor idade no inĂcio da doença, sem sequelas, com grau de dependĂȘncia reduzido que apresentam melhor funcionamento fĂsico; sĂŁo os que apresentam doença associada os que referem maior dor corporal e melhor funcionamento cognitivo; sĂŁo os que apresentam elevada capacidade funcional que referem melhor funcionamento social; sĂŁo os que realizam reabilitação que apresentam melhor saĂșde mental; sĂŁo os portadores de EM entre os 56 e os 67 anos e com elevada idade no inĂcio da doença os que manifestam pior funcionamento sexual; apresentam melhor QDV geral os que se encontram satisfeitos laboralmente. Existem tambĂ©m influĂȘncias significativas entre QDV e todos os factores da vulnerabilidade ao stress; bem como entre QDV e todos os factores do apoio social (relativamente Ă s variĂĄveis psicossociais). ConclusĂŁo: As evidĂȘncias encontradas vĂŁo de encontro a outros estudos e no sentido de reafirmar a importĂąncia do estudo da QDV, confirmando-se no nosso estudo que os portadores de EM apresentam prejuĂzo em relação Ă população geral portuguesa saudĂĄvel. | dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, demyelinating and unpredictable disease, which its origin and treatment is yet unknown. It is the chronic neurological disease that more affects young adults, at working age, and might develop into situations of varying levels of disability. This study's main objective was to understand the perception of quality of life (QOL), from vulnerability to stress and social support of people with MS, as well as the socio-demographic, clinical and psychosocial influences. Method: It was conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study, of quantitative nature, where 54 MS patients attended, most of them were women (61.1%), married (72.2%), with an age average of 42 years, employed (37.0%) , with an age average of 33 years old at the beginning of the disease. To measure the variable the following instruments were used: Social-Demographic/Clinic Questionnaire, Multiple Sclerosis Scale and Quality of Life, Barthel Index, Scale of Vulnerability to Stress and Social Support Scale. Results: In the context of the socio-demographic and clinical variables the MS patients between 20 and 31 years, employed, with younger age at the beginning of the disease, without sequelae and with reduced level of dependence have better physical functioning; the patients that have associated disease are the one's who report a greater bodily pain and a better cognitive functioning; the one's that show higher functional capacity have better social skills; the one's who carry out rehabilitation have better mental health; MS patients between 56 and 67 years with a higher age at the beginning of the disease are the one's who manifest worse sexual functioning; the one's who have better general QOL are those who are satisfied with their jobs. There are also significant influences between QOL and all factors of vulnerability to stress, as well as between QOL and all factors of social support (in relation to psychosocial variables). Conclusion: The evidences found merge down to other studies reaffirming the importance of the study of QOL, confirmed with this study that people with MS show impairment in the face of the general healthy Portuguese population.
