Abstract(s)

ABSTRACT Population is increasingly aging in contemporary society as well as dependent elderly. It is noteworthy that achieved the goal of increasing life expectancy, the current challenge is to provide greater longevity with quality of life to the elderly. Given this goal, it is important to understand the role of physical activity in the delay / mitigation of the aging effects, and in its influence on the quality of life of the elderly, especially those aspects related to health, physical, mental and social well-being. This will, therefore, be the main research question of this study - What is the influence of physical activity on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of the elderly who live autonomously in the municipality of Viseu? To answer this question we settled two main objectives: Characterize the elderly population in the municipality of Viseu, in relation to some socio-demographic variables, according to their level of usual physical activity and of their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Verify the existence of relationships between variables (socio-demographic characteristics - level of usual physical activity - sport), and the dimensions of the HRQOL of the elderly. The empirical study was based on a descriptive, analytical and quantitative correlation, which linked the level of usual physical activity of the elderly (through the Modified Baecke) with their HRQOL (MOS SF-through 36). Data were collected by a street survey during the months of February and March 2011. The sample is not probabilistic by convenience, consisting of 52 elderly of the municipality of Viseu. According to the results, we highlight the following conclusions: The elderly of this sample have a low level of usual physical activity and sport practice, compared with international recommendations. The average level of HRQOL in this sample is positive for all dimensions of HRQOL (MOS SF-36), except to the extent of General Health. However, in what General Health, Physical ability and Vitality factors are concerned there are numerous elderly people with negative HRQOL. Level of Usual Physical Activity for the Elderly has a positive correlation with dimensions of HRQOL, except for the emotional dimension Performance. The practice of sport has a positive correlation with the HRQOL in all dimensions. Keywords: Quality of life; physical activity; elderly.
