- Residents’ perceptions, attitudes and support towards rural tourismPublication . Pato, LúciaThis research analyses residents’ perceptions on the effects of rural tourism in two regions of Portugal, namely in Dão-Lafões Region and Douro Region. Although residents do not develop negative environmental and sociocultural perceptions with regards to tourism, they agree that it only benefits a small number of residents, thus widening the gap between the rich and poor in these regions. It is also proposed that there are different patterns of residents´ support depending on their differential benefits obtained from tourism. In fact, the hypotheses between different constructs that affect residents’ perceptions and support were tested with Mann-Whitney and Spearman Rho tests. The results confirmed the existence of significant relationships between personal benefits received and both positive and negative perceptions developed by residents and their satisfaction and support of tourism. It is further considered that the outcomes of the research should be taken into consideration in the process of creation and implementation of strategies aimed towards contributing to a model of tourism development that puts people in the spotlight and can thus contribute to the planning and managing of these regions more appropriately.
- Characteristics of Farms in the European Union: Relationships Between Energy Costs and Other VariablesPublication . Martinho, VítorThe very characteristics of agriculture call for specific attention when it comes to the evolution of this sector across the globe. In fact, this is a sector which produces essential products to meet basic human needs, but usually requires public intervention, through agricultural policies, to avoid an unbalanced evolution between demand and supply having consequences on market prices. This is because agricultural policies are so famous across the world and specifically in the European Union, in the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy. On the other hand, the great diversity of agricultural realities among regions calls for specific strategies to be adjusted to local particularities. In addition, climate change and global warming bring new challenges, namely in the use of critical resources (because of their scarcity and environmental impacts), such as energy and water. In this context, it would seem pertinent to assess the interrelationships between energy use in European Union farms and other farming variables, namely to identify how the energy consumption is affected by other dimensions in the sector. For this purpose, data from the European Union Farm Accountancy Data Network were considered for the period 2013–2018. This statistical information was first explored through descriptive analysis and then with matrices of correlation. As main insights, it is important to note that energy costs increased, on average over the period considered, by 2.7%. On the other hand, farms with a higher level of intensification and higher energy costs are those that receive more subsidies.
- Realities of Entrepreneurship in the European Union and Other World Countries: Are We Prepared for the New Paradigm After the Pandemic?Publication . Martinho, VítorThe objectives of this research are to evaluate the entrepreneurship attitudes and skills in the European Union and other world countries context before COVID-19 and discuss perspectives for the future. The information available in the Eurobarometers for the entrepreneurship that was worked through quantitative approaches was assessed. The results show that there is a long way to go in the European Union to achieve the desirable levels of personal, profession, and business entrepreneurship. In fact, the perceptions of the European citizen about the entrepreneurship changed in the last years, in consequence, for example, of technological developments, but still fall short of other countries as, for example, in some aspects the United States. In any cases, the skill improvements verified in Europe and the levels of innovation achieved are good news for the new challenges that will arrive soon.

- Reducing Energy Costs in European Union Farms: Analysis of EfficiencyPublication . Martinho, VítorEfficiency in the use of resources is one of the most adjusted approaches towards achieving sustainable development in any economic sector, including agriculture. In fact, the current challenges surrounding the global farming sector are to maintain, or even, in some circumstances, increase production in such a way that it is compatible with the increasingly desirable goals for decarbonisation. Amongst the resources which are critical for sustainability within the agricultural sector, one of the most significant is energy, considering the needs of this resource to generate numerous farming production factors and the energetic requirements for its various activities. This is particularly important in the regions and countries in the European Union, due to the variety of contexts and the framework of the European agricultural policies, where the design of adjusted policy instruments is always a great task. In this way, the main objective of this research is to analyse farming efficiency in European Union agricultural regions, over the period 2013–2018. Considering this objective, data from the European Union Farm Accountancy Data Network were considered and first analysed through factor-cluster assessment, to obtain homogenous decision-making units, and then through data envelopment analysis. For the data envelopment analysis, a model with the inverse of the energy costs as output was considered. The main findings show that the savings in energy costs in European Union farms have impacts on the output as well as on other inputs.
- Networking and Participatory Research Promoting Quality of Life and Well-Being in Portuguese-Speaking African CountriesPublication . However, we all believe that there are always ways to live better. For many people the measurement of a better life translates into the guarantee of social rights, the right to basic services, good land, seed and sufficient nutritious food for their community members. The Mechanism to Facilitate the Participation of Universities in the Food and Nutrition Security Council of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries is a cooperative academic network fomented by the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This mechanism works with teaching, research and extension in the CPLP Food and Nutrition Security Strategy. The pillars of CPLP Strategy are the strengthening of the governance of public policies on Food and Nutrition Security at all levels of government, social protection based on guaranteeing access to food and family farming with a strategy to increase the availability of good quality food, promoting social and environmental sustainability. CPLP University Mechanism has provided training processes for technicians who work in public policies for Food and Nutrition Security and has contributed to the strengthening of postgraduate programs in Portuguese-speaking African countries. As consequence, it has favored participatory research and mixed methods as a theoretical methodological approach. Therefore, it seeks to focus on the territories of Food and Nutrition Security practices to transform reality, as recommended by CPLP Strategy, however, with the autonomous assumptions of the collaborative network. This chapter presents how local researchers perceive the results of a process of inducing an academic network to transform the local reality and promote Food and Nutrition Security in the context of the CPLP.
- Will All Municipalities Be Affected in the Same Way by Changes in Overnight Stays?Publication . Martinho, VítorThe municipalities in Portugal play a crucial role in promoting tourism in an integrated way, and appear, in some cases, as essential territorial brands for the respective marketing plans. This territorial marketing may take advantages of natural, cultural and historical municipal heritage to create wealth and maintain the identity and heterogeneity. Of course, the supranational and transnational cooperation to combine strategies are, also, important in a perspective of complementarity. In this context, this study aims to provide a perspective of the tourism sector in Portugal, through bibliometric analysis and statistical survey, so as to show the importance of the Portuguese municipalities in the performance of tourism and to highlight the impacts, at a municipal level, from the Covid-19 pandemic. The results reveal that the impacts from the pandemic were not symmetrical across the Portuguese territory and that the more affected municipalities were those which were more dependent on mass tourism, specifically those located in the big cities and the Algarve.
- The Main Changes in Tourism Revenues: There Are Alternatives?Publication . Martinho, VítorThe competitiveness of the tourism sector in Portugal is crucial for economic performance in the Portuguese context. The new paradigms created by the pandemic have compromised this competitiveness and the alternatives are, for now, not well perceived or understood by the several stakeholders. For example, the possibility of reconverting employees from the tourism sector into the social sector was not well received by the various key players involved. To better support the design of new policies, namely to find alternatives for the unemployment that will be created by the Covid-19 pandemic, the objective of this study is to present a perspective of tourism revenue before and after the pandemic. The main outcomes suggest that it will be urgent to find new alternatives of business and employment in order to mitigate the impacts from these new paradigms, due to the decrease across the several dimensions of revenue which has been accentuated and the perspectives for the summer months are not promising enough to overcome the dramatic context created.
