- Prevalence of dental caries and fissure sealants in a portuguese sample of adolescentsPublication . Veiga, Nélio J.; Pereira, Carlos M.; Ferreira, Paula C.; Correia, Ilídio J.Introduction: The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of dental caries and the DMFT index, as well as the distribution pattern of pit and fissure sealants on permanent teeth in a Portuguese sample of adolescents, and to assess whether the existing usage of sealants and socio-demographic factors are correlated to caries prevalence on the examined sample. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed with a sample of 447 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years old, attending a public school in Sátão, Portugal. A self-administered questionnaire with questions about oral health behaviours and socio-economic status was answered by adolescents in the classroom. Clinical examination of oral health status and assessment of fissure sealants were accomplished by only one trained member of the research team. Results: We obtained a DMFT index of 3.32 (2.92), which indicates a moderate level of prevalence of dental caries. When considering a DMFT=0, we found significant statistical differences between the parents´ level of education (≤ 4th grade=26.3 vs 5th-12th grade=18.8 vs >12th grade=43.3, p=0.001), gender (male=27.3 vs female=19.6, p=0.04), age (≤15 years=27.1 vs >15 years=18.5, p=0.02), presence of fissure sealants (yes=30.6 vs no=13.5, p=0.001) and experience of dental pain (no=25.4 vs yes=16.8, p=0.02). When analyzing the prevalence of fissure sealants, we verified that 58.8% of adolescents had at least one fissure sealant applied. Significant statistical differences were found when analyzing the presence of fissure sealants related with parents´educational level (>9th grade, OR=1.56 CI95%=1.05-2.54), gender (female, OR=1.86 CI95%=1.19-2.98), experience of dental pain (yes, OR=0.62 CI95%=0.39-0.97) and presence of dental caries (yes, OR=0.35 CI95%=0.19-0.65). Conclusions: The moderate level of caries prevalence reveals the need of improvement of primary prevention interventions among Portuguese adolescents. The establishment of a more targeted preventive program with better and more effective oral health education is essential, having into account socio-demographic aspects.
- Professional factors and emotional competence in healthcare professionalsPublication . Andrade, Ana; Martins, Rosa; Cunha, Madalena; Albuquerque, Carlos; Ribeiro, OlivérioAbstract: Healthcare professionals may face emotions which are hard to deal with. It's important to improve emotional skills in order to develop an appropriate control when it comes to professional situations. Professional variables interfere with the emotional competence of healthcare professionals; What are the predictor variables of emotional competence in healthcare professionals? was our research focus. We aimed to assess the Emotional Competence in healthcare professionals; To check if the professional variables are related to the Emotional Competence of healthcare professionals with and without experience in Palliative Care; To identify predictor variables of emotional competence in healthcare professionals. Cross-sectional descriptive-correlational quantitative research with a universe of 116 health professionals: 40 with experience in palliative care and 76 without experience. For the measurement of the variables it was used a socio-demographic and professional classification form and the Emotional Competence Questionnaire of Taksic (ECQ) (2000) validated by Lima Santos and Faria (2005) for the Portuguese Population had been applied. Healthcare professionals with high emotional skills are the oldest (≥35 years old), female, with a university degree and with no experience in palliative care ones. Career and the type of relationships at workplace influence the emotional competence of professionals with experience; the type of unit influences healthcare professionals with experience in palliative care. Professional variables (profession, type of relationships at work context and unit type) influence the emotional competence skills of healthcare professionals with and without experience in Palliative Care. Caregiving in the final stages of life brings a diversity of experience to the healthcare professional and it requires training in emotional and intellectual areas to ensure the promotion of stability and emotional comfort.

- Benefits for the father from their involvement in the labour and birth sequencePublication . Coutinho, Emília Carvalho; Antunes, Joana Gomes Vilaça Cardoso; Duarte, João Carvalho; Parreira, Vitória Castro; Chaves, Cláudia Margarida Balula; Nelas, Paula Alexandra BatistaThe link between father and child is fundamental, the presence of the former in the birthing room being essential to closer links between the triad. The purpose of this study is to identify the benefits for the father from their involvement during the labor and birth sequence. An integrational review of the literature was carried out together with research on the databases: PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, Institutional Holdings and Digital Libraries and EBSCO Host published between 2000 e 2014. The results demonstrate the existence of a ‘new’ father who is involved in the consultations during the pregnancy and preparations for the birth, his presence in the birthing room making him feel that he is playing an active part in the process encourages him to develop closer and more intimate links leading to a consolidation of the family unit, the assumption of a parental role in addition to being able to share the experience of the birth with the mother and contribute to her well-being. The team of health professionals has a crucial role in the integration of the father into the process of maternity with his presence also being reflected in the humanization of health care. It may be concluded that there are many benefits from paternal involvement in the birth when accompanying the mother from the moment of pregnancy with an active presence during the birth and enjoying the entire process by sharing emotions and feelings and contributing to the humanization of care and an affective link between the triad. The performance of the Specialist Nursing Staff in the areas of Maternal health and Obstetrics is reflected in the inclusion of the father in the birthing room and in the de-mythification of taboos.

Silva, Madalena; Chaves, Claudia; Duarte, João; Amaral, Odete; Ferreira, ManuelaHigher education has influenced students’ concepts of sleeping time leading to a deficit of sleep quality. Sleep disorders constitute one of the most pertinent health problems in western society. Identify the factors that influence the sleep quality in nursing students; Identify which social demographic and academic variants interfere with sleep quality; Analyze the influence of variables of psychological context and investigate the relationship between the daytime somnolence with the sleep quality in nursing students. Analytic, descriptive and correlational study in a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 403 nursing students. We applied a Sociodemographic and Academic characterization survey, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Scale, Eysenck Personality Inventory, Anxiety scale, Stress and depression and Pittsburgh h Sleep Quality Index. The students’ average age is 23.61 years. Women (86.0%) attending the fourth year (27.4%) reveal less sleep quality (63.2%) and more daytime somnolence (24.3%). First year students aged 20 years residing alone in rural areas present higher levels of anxiety, are less extroverted and more neurotic, reveal less sleep quality. Sleep disorders constitute a public health problem that requires intervention and adopting educational measures and promoting health awareness raising in educational institutions in order to improve student action in building up of their own sleep quality.

Chaves, Claudia; Santos, MárioWith regards to home care, primary care nurses should carry out their activities and performance with an emphasis on health education. Considering patient satisfaction in the relationship aspect of helping and communication can contribute to improving nursing care. This cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study, whose aim is to assess the degree of patient satisfaction in relation to nursing care provided at home, particularly in the dimensions of relationships, communication and health education. To conduct this research an intentional non-probabilistic sample, consisting of 44 dependent patients, belonging to the area of a health centre in the central region of Portugal, who receive nursing care at home was selected. The data collection instrument used was a form, consisting of two parts: the first part to characterise the sample with 10 questions, one of which is subdivided and the second part consisting of 16 Likert type scale questions to obtain the patients’ opinions. From our results we stress that our sample had a very aged population, mostly residing in urban areas. Satisfaction was evaluated in three dimensions: relationships, communication and health education. With regard to relationships, older males (age range 88-98 years), who are more highly dependent, married, uneducated and living in rural districts are more satisfied. Regarding communication, older males (88-98 years), with a greater degree of dependency, bachelors, educated and living in urban parishes are most satisfied. As for the health education dimension, younger men (68-78 years), who are less dependent, married, educated and living in urban environments are more satisfied. The main conclusions inferred are that, in the overall assessment of all of the dimensions, the classification is very good, and it is suggested that organizational investments are made and to equip health centres with human and material resources.
