- Adaptação Portuguesa da Escala de Qualidade de Vida para Pessoas com EsquizofreniaPublication . Pinho, Lara Guedes de; Pereira, Anabela; Chaves, CláudiaA esquizofrenia é uma doença mental grave e crónica que acomete a qualidade de vida de quem dela padece. A Quality of Life Scale (QLS), de Heinrichs, Hanlon e Carpenter, 1984, é uma das escalas específicas mais utilizadas a nível internacional para a avaliar. Por não existir em Portugal nenhum instrumento ajustado para a esquizofrenia, este estudo tem como objetivo proceder à adaptação e validação para a população portuguesa desta escala, na sua versão reduzida, com 7 itens. A amostra foi constituída por 282 participantes com diagnóstico de esquizofrenia de diferentes instituições do país. A análise das qualidades psicométricas (análise fatorial exploratória e consistência interna) do instrumento avaliado mostrou índices adequados de fidedignidade e validade, consistentes com os dados internacionais existentes. Estes resultados justificam a utilização do mesmo no contexto português.
- Benefits for the father from their involvement in the labour and birth sequencePublication . The purpose of this study is to identify the benefits for the father from their involvement during the labor and birth sequence. An integrational review of the literature was carried out together with research on the databases: PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, Institutional Holdings and Digital Libraries and EBSCO Host published between 2000 e 2014. The results demonstrate the existence of a ‘new’ father who is involved in the consultations during the pregnancy and preparations for the birth, his presence in the birthing room making him feel that he is playing an active part in the process encourages him to develop closer and more intimate links leading to a consolidation of the family unit, the assumption of a parental role in addition to being able to share the experience of the birth with the mother and contribute to her well-being. The team of health professionals has a crucial role in the integration of the father into the process of maternity with his presence also being reflected in the humanization of health care. It may be concluded that there are many benefits from paternal involvement in the birth when accompanying the mother from the moment of pregnancy with an active presence during the birth and enjoying the entire process by sharing emotions and feelings and contributing to the humanization of care and an affective link between the triad. The performance of the Specialist Nursing Staff in the areas of Maternal health and Obstetrics is reflected in the inclusion of the father in the birthing room and in the de-mythification of taboos.
- Brazilian Front-of-Package Labeling: A Product Compliance Analysis 12 Months after Implementation of RegulationsPublication . Carried out from May to October 2023, we analyzed 2145 products of brands present in five Brazilian states. A total of 541 products presented front-of-package warnings. The categories varied in their adherence to front-of-package labeling, highlighting a prevalence of combined warnings, such as high in added sugar and high in saturated fat on sweet biscuits and chocolates. Sausages showed a high prevalence of high in sodium and high in saturated fat warnings. Beverages stood out as high in added sugar, while fats, dairy products, frozen preparations, seasonings, and sauces presented diversity in the warnings. Other products, such as panettone, showed a high presence of alerts. The study demonstrated the widespread presence of front-of-package labeling on ultra-processed products highly consumed by the Brazilian population. Considering the alarming presence of these foods in the Brazilian diet, it is concluded that front-of-package nutrition labeling is crucial to inform and raise awareness among consumers, allowing healthier choices and potentially contributing to a reduction in chronic diseases and the costs associated with treatment in the health system.
- Characterisation of institutionalised Portuguese older adult fallers: is there a place for pharmacist intervention? A preliminary studyPublication . Older adults living in long-term care facilities (LTCF) are at greater risk of injury resulting from a fall due to multiple factors, such as nutritional, functional/cognitive impairment, postural instability, polypharmacy, and the presence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). Medication management in LTCF is complex and often sub-optimal and might be crucial for falls. Pharmacist intervention is important, since they have a unique knowledge of medication. However, studies mapping the impact of pharmaceutical activities in Portuguese LTC settings are scarce. Objective: This study aims to assess the characteristics of older adult fallers living in LTFCs and examine the relationship between falling and several factors in this population. We also intend to explore the prevalence of PIMs and their relationship with the occurrence of falls. Methods: The study was conducted in two long-term care facilities for elderly people, in the central region of Portugal. We included patients aged 65 and older with no reduced mobility or physical weakness and with the ability to understand spoken and written Portuguese. The following information was assessed: sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities, polypharmacy, fear of falling, functional, nutritional and cognitive status. PIMs were evaluated according to the Beers criteria (2019). Results: A total of 69 institutionalised older adults, 45 women and 24 men, with a mean age of 83.14 ± 8.87 years were included. The prevalence of falls was 21.74% Out of these, 46.67% (n=7) fell once, 13.33% (n=2) fell twice, and 40% (n=6) fell 3 or more times. Fallers were mainly women, had lower levels of education, were well nourished, had moderate to severe levels of dependence, and displayed moderate cognitive impairment. All adult fallers had a fear of falling. The main comorbidities of this population were related to the cardiovascular system. Polypharmacy was present in every patient, and at least one PIM was identified in 88.41% of the subjects. Fear of falling (FOF) and cognitive impairment (in subjects with 1 to 11 years of education) showed statistically significant associations with the occurrence of falls (p=0.005 and p=0.05, respectively). No significant differences were found between fallers and non-fallers for any other factors. Conclusions: This present study is a preliminary contribution to characterise a group of older adult fallers living in Portuguese LTCFs and demonstrated that fear of falling and cognitive impairment are associated with the occurrence of falls in this population. The high prevalence of polypharmacy and PIMs emphasises the need for tailored interventions featuring the collaboration of a pharmacist to optimise medication management in this population.
- A dependência de tabaco em estudantes de enfermagemPublication . Saraiva, Ana Gabriela da Silva; Chaves, Cláudia Margarida Correia Balula; Duarte, João Carvalho; Amaral, Maria Odete PereiraEnquadramento: Os estudantes de enfermagem, pelos conhecimentos adquiridos ao longo do curso, devem estar conscientes dos malefícios do tabagismo. Objetivos: Estimar a prevalência de consumo de tabaco e identificar as variáveis sociodemográficas, académicas e psicológicas, associadas à dependência de nicotina, em estudantes de enfermagem. Metodologia: Estudo transversal analítico. Amostra de 404 estudantes de enfermagem, 86,1% género feminino (M=23,60±6,67 anos). Questionário constituído por variáveis sociodemográficas e académicas, Escala de ansiedade, Depressão e Stresse, Escala de Afeto Positivo e Negativo, o Teste Fagerström da Dependência à Nicotina e o Inventário de Personalidade de Eysenck. Resultados: Prevalência de consumo de tabaco de 25,2%, género masculino com uma percentagem maior (32,1% vs. 24,1%). Os estudantes começaram a fumar aos 16,8 anos. Dos estudantes que começaram a fumar antes dos 15 anos, 44,4% apresentam um nível de dependência elevado. O consumo de tabaco associou-se à extroversão e ao stresse. Conclusão: Um quarto dos estudantes fumam e o consumo associou-se com variáveis psicológicas. Há necessidade da criação e implementação de intervenções de dissuasão do consumo de substâncias psicoativas.
- Development and Rapid Sensory Descriptive Characterization of Cereal Bars Made with Brazilian Licuri Nut (Syagrus coronata)Publication . This fruit has high socioeconomic importance in the regions where it grows, being incorporated into exported animal feed and also into gastronomic preparations. Cereal bars are ready-to-eat highly consumed products with increased demand, commonly made with cereals and oilseeds such as licuri. In this sense, the incorporation of licuri in cereal bars may increase its socioeconomic value and expand its potential use. Thus, the objective of the study was to analyze acceptance and describe the sensory characteristics of cereal bars incorporated with licuri nuts. This study was conducted in four stages: (1) development of samples; (2) chemical composition analysis; (3) sensory analysis; and (4) statistical analysis. Cereal bars with licuri presented proportionally lower carbohydrate and protein content as the incorporation of licuri nut increased. However, the dietary fiber content increased. Further, 122 untrained panelists participated in the analysis. The results showed that samples with all proportions of incorporation of licuri nuts were acceptable. Furthermore, the sensory descriptors related to the presence of licuri were positively associated with product acceptance. In this way, this study demonstrates yet another possibility for use of the fruit, increasing its socioeconomic potential.
- Eating Attitudes of Patients with Celiac Disease in Brazil: A Nationwide Assessment with the EAT-26 InstrumentPublication . Franco, Luiza; Yoshio Nakano, Eduardo; Raposo, Antonio; Alturki, Hmidan; Alarifi, Sehad; Chaves, Claudia; Teixeira-Lemos, Edite; Romão, BernardoCeliac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by the ingestion of gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. In this sense, a gluten-free diet is the only safe treatment available. Due to the restrictions resulting from this eating pattern, this treatment may impair the relationship of the people with CD with food, increasing the risk of a disordered eating attitude, which is associated with eating disorders. The EAT-26 is a validated instrument already applied worldwide in different populations, and higher scores are suggestive of eating attitudes prone to evolve into eating disorders. Studies carried out in other countries have already shown that people with CD are prone to developing eating disorders; however, no study has been carried out with this theme in the population with CD in Brazil. We carried out a nationwide cross-sectional study in three steps: (i) study design and instrument; (ii) recruitment of participants and ethics; (iii) statistical analysis. A total of 385 participants were included in our sample, 96.36% of them being women. The internal consistency of the applied self-administered Brazilian version of the EAT-26 online questionnaire presented a satisfactory Cronbach’s alpha of 0.812, and in total, 36.1% of the respondents were classified with a disordered eating attitude. No differences were found among the scores of participants when divided by categories regarding gender, average monthly income, age, and educational level. However, scores classified as a disordered eating attitude were found in respondents with a body mass index classified as overweight and obese. Our study highlights that disordered eating attitudes are present in overweight and obese women with celiac disease; thus, public health politics are needed to prevent and treat these attitudes.
- Eating Habits and Food Literacy: Study Involving a Sample of Portuguese AdolescentsPublication . Ferreira, Manuela; Guiné, Raquel; Leitão, A. L.; Duarte, João; Andrade, J.; Amaral, OdeteAdolescents tend to neglect food and their eating pattern is influenced by several factors. Adolescents’ health literacy substantiates their ability to respond to the growing demands of health, being linked to health promotion in several areas, including food. The goal of this work was to analyze the relationship between sociodemographic and contextual variables with secondary school students’ food literacy. A quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study was carried out with a sample of 181 nonprobabilistic secondary school students, aged between 16 and 21 years (mean = 18.09 years ± 1.45), mostly female (58.0%), from 11th grade (35.4%), who are part of a secondary school in central Portugal. As a tool for data collection, the questionnaire of the project “Your PEL – Promote and Empower for Health Literacy in the young population” was used, aggregating three areas: eating behaviors, harmful consumptions and sexuality. The results showed that 58.6% of young people eat 4–5 meals a day, consume fast food weekly (79%) and eat soup (82.3%). Additionally, they eat fruit and vegetables on a daily basis (94.5 and 83.4%, respectively). The results further showed that 10th grade students have higher levels of health and food literacy. It was observed that both girls and boys are interested in receiving information regarding food, transmitted through social networks and by a communication application (84.5 and 73.5%, respectively), with significant differences (χ2 = 4.768; p = 0.028). Adolescents face unique health challenges and a critical level of health literacy compromises their understanding of information about diet and future health. The results indicate that educational plans to empower adolescents in these areas, which integrate gender and age differences and sources of information as important variables to be considered, are pivotal for increasing levels of health and food literacy.
- Emotional inteligence and quality of life in special education teachersPublication . Campos, Sofia; Martins, Rosa; Martins, Conceição; Margarida Correia Balula Chaves, Cláudia; Duarte, JoãoAbstract: The main aim of this study is to evaluate the emotional intelligence of special education teachers, who work with handicapped children and teenagers in public elementary and secondary schools, so as to understand which variables can influence emotional intelligence of view of special education teachers. In our empirical research, we apply the "EQ-map" scale, which allowed us to evaluate the Emotional Quotient of a group of special education teachers specializing in mental and motor areas as well as visual and auditory disabilities. In this sense, our main results show that in our sample emotional intelligence is located mostly in vulnerability levels and need for attention, which varies inversely with Life occurrences and general health and positively with the Quality of Life and Satisfaction, Relationship Quotient and Optimal Performance. This is a descriptive epidemiological, cross-sectional and correlational study.
- Emotional intelligence and life satisfaction in Portuguese older adultsPublication . Andrade, Ana; Martins, Rosa; Duarte, João; Moreira, Helena; Madureira, António; Albuquerque, CarlosAbstract Aims: To assess the level of emotional intelligence of older adults; to verify if sociodemographic variables and life satisfaction are related to emotional intelligence and its dimensions (empathy, self-motivation, self-awareness, self-control and sociability). Methods: Cross-sectional study, correlational-descriptive of quantitative characteristics. Location: Portuguese older adults resident in the district of Viseu. Participants: 1040 older adults, aged between 65 and 96 years, with an average of 74.14 years. All of them are resident in the Viseu district, retired and participated voluntarily in the study. Main scales: Emotional Intelligence Measuring Scale (EIMS), Life Satisfaction Rating Scale and a sociodemographic characterization record. Results: Of the surveyed older adults population, 39.7% have high emotional intelligence and 37.4% low emotional intelligence. Life satisfaction is related to the level of emotional intelligence. More than half (55.9%) of the population have high emotional intelligence and high life satisfaction. For the dimensions of Emotional Intelligence (Empathy, Self Motivation, Self-Awareness and Sociability) and Life satisfaction (Health and physical ability, Mental and social engagement capacity) it was shown a statistical significance in the results. Conclusions: The high emotional intelligence of older adults is related to a better life satisfaction. These two aspects should be considered when healthcare professionals are handling with older adults and this study contributes to procedures that should be regarded during the aging process in order to provide a better quality of life and well-being to the older adults.
