    As crescentes exigências ao nível da qualidade e segurança alimentar e as preocupações que, actualmente, a sociedade manifesta relativamente aos recursos naturais e ambiente em geral, obrigam à adopção de modos de produção alternativos aos sistemas produtivistas, nos quais se enquadra a produção integrada. Em produção integrada produzem-se alimentos de alta qualidade utilizando os recursos naturais e mecanismos de regulação natural em substituição de factores de produção prejudiciais ao ambiente. Assumem particular importância a preservação e melhoria da fertilidade do solo, a biodiversidade e a observação de critérios éticos e sociais. Assume-se como princípios a abordagem holística da exploração agrícola, o ecossistema agrícola como base para o planeamento e realização das actividades na exploração de forma a evitar impactes ambientais, o equilíbrio dos ciclos nutritivos e a preservação do bem estar de todas as espécies animais domésticas. O manual técnico de Produção Integrada, inserido no projecto «Agricultura e Ambiente», pretende disponibilizar informação junto dos operadores, produtores agrícolas, técnicos, empresas comerciais e de certificação, relativa a este modo de produção. Abordam-se aspectos relacionados com os compromissos estabelecidos nas políticas agro-ambientais, com os princípios e soluções técnicas a adoptar nos componentes da produção e da exploração, responsáveis pelas perturbações ambientais que se pretendem reduzir. Apresentam-se, a título de exemplo, propostas de itinerários técnicos de produção integrada para culturas de relevo no Entre Douro e Minho: vinha, milho forragem e hortícolas.

    Este estudo tem assim por objectivo tornar mais competitivo o sector florestal da RDL, através da melhoria da formação profissional dos seguintes intervenientes nesta área de actividade: produtores florestais, viveiristas, empreiteiros florestais, madeireiros e técnicos florestais. Simultaneamente, este trabalho poderá servir de guião a futuras acções de formação para o sector florestal, originando assim uma maior racionalidade na aprovação das mesmas. Permite ainda avaliar a formação realizada até ao momento, e contribuir para a percepção dos aspectos a serem melhorados nas futuras acções de formação, incidindo sobretudo nos aspectos práticos da sua actividade, isto é, no “saber fazer”.

  • The Agricultural Economics of the 21st Century

    This publication provides insight into the agricultural sector. It illustrates new tendencies in agricultural economics and dynamics (interrelationship with other sectors in rural zones and multifunctionality) and the implications of the World Trade Organization negotiations in the international trade of agricultural products. Due to environmental problems, availability of budget, consumer preferences for food safety and pressure from the World Trade Organization, there are many changes in the agricultural sector. This book addresses those new developments and provides insights into possible future developments. The agricultural activity is an economic sector that is fundamental for a sustainable economic growth of every country. However, this sector has many particularities, namely those related with some structural problems (many farms with reduced dimension, sometimes lack of vocational training of the farmers, difficulties of put the farmers together in associations and cooperatives), variations of the productions and prices over the year and some environmental problems derived from the utilization of pesticides and fertilizers.

    A implementação de explorações pecuárias é uma atividade que não deve ser descurada pelos médicos veterinários. A sua formação permite-lhes compreender o animal e a sua relação com o ambiente que o rodeia, nomeadamente as instalações pecuárias, bem como as pastagens ao seu dispor. Assim, antes da execução física de qualquer investimento, torna-se imperioso definir um adequado plano empresarial, alicerçado em fundamentos técnicos e científicos. Na presente dissertação foi descrita a elaboração de um plano empresarial para a implementação de uma exploração de caprinos com vocação creatófora, para a instalação de uma jovem agricultora, ao abrigo do Programa de Desenvolvimento Rural (Proder), tendo por base considerandos técnico-científicos e legais, adaptando-os a uma realidade concreta.

  • Economics of Tourism in Portugal: Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic

    Taking into account the current world conditions and the importance of the tourism sector for the Portuguese economy, the main objective of this book is to highlight the economic contexts of tourism in Portugal at regional and municipal levels, namely presenting the frameworks before the Covid-19 pandemic and discussing the main implications for the future. To this purpose, economic dynamics are described for each of the dimensions of tourism in the Portuguese reality. From these frameworks, several discussions about future perspectives in these dimensions are presented.

  • Energy Costs and Farm Characteristics in the European Union: Highlighting Linkages with Structural and Policy Dimensions

    The relationships between energy costs in the agricultural sector, specifically in farms, and other structural characteristics and policy instruments are complex and involve several dimensions, but it is crucial to know them, namely to promote a more sustainable energy consumption and design more adjusted strategies. In fact, a deeper knowledge of the interrelationships between energy costs and other dimensions in the farming sector may bring relevant insights into a more efficient, more environmentally compatible and more competitive farming plan. Efficiency, competitiveness and agricultural policies are the buzzwords for a balanced energy use in agriculture. From this perspective, the main objective of this study is to explore the main interrelationships among energy costs in farms in the European Union (including the UK), over the period 2013-2018, and the following groups of indicators related to structures and policy measures: labour; farm area; outputs; inputs; investments; assets; taxes; and subsidies. These data were obtained from the European Union Farm Accountancy Data Network and were explored through descriptive approaches, Data Envelopment Analysis and factor-cluster assessment. A bibliometric analysis was, also, carried out about the issues addressed. The results obtained may provide relevant support for the several stakeholders, namely for European Union institutions and the governments of each member-state. In fact, it could be interesting, for example, to design more adjusted policy instruments which, in turn, promote more sustainable farms.
