- Insects based foods: Consumer perspectivePublication . Guiné, Raquel; Florença, Sofia de Guiné eThe consumption of foods of animal origin poses some challenges in the present and for the future. The environmental impacts of producing animal protein are relevant, and they include the emission of gases with greenhouse effect (like methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide), the use of vast areas of land for animal rearing and for cultivation of pastures, consumption of high amounts of water, and pollution of the soil and water. Insects have been pointed out as a more sustainable alternative to conventional sources of meat, including by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). Insects have a considerably lower environmental impact at many levels (lower emission of GHG, less consumption of feed and water, and lower needs of land), while also showing a high conversion ratio from feed to protein food. Additionally they provide high quality of proteins and amino acids, fat, +particularly unsaturated fatty acids, while being rich in a number of minerals and vitamins. Finally, insect farming is less subject to diseases and problems than conventional animal farming, and this implies lower use of hormones and antibiotics. However, to consume insects or insect base foods is not readily accepted in regions where entomophagy is not traditional, and many people in Western Societies experience disgust and neophobia towards edible insects. This is minimized when the insects are not consumed whole and are disguised within other familiar foods in the form of flour, for example. To understand consumer reactions, expectations, motivations and knowledge contributes for a better shaping of actions aiming at increasing acceptability of insect-based foods among western countries. The EISuFood project was dedicated to study the food habits and knowledge about edible insects as sustainable foods in a set of different countries, initially belonging to the consortium (Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Croatia, Greece, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey).
- THE EVOLUTION OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION: A RISKY APPROACHPublication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa Lopes, Ana Maria; Pereira, José Manuel de Almeida; Martin, Justine; Casañ Pitarch, Ricardo; Gillain, Romain; Fidalgo, Susana; Mafalda, CarmoThe introduction of active pedagogies into teaching practices is creating renewed motivation and energy for teachers and students alike. These varied pedagogies, marked by a few trends, represent, particularly in higher education (HE), a tremendous opportunity to modernise content and make the learning environment livelier and more open. However, it should be acknowledged that many difficulties have arisen, and many challenges need to be overcome. It is not only a question of selecting suitable active teaching methods, but it is also vital to define strategies that are appropriate to the target audience, the time available, and theskills being pursued to be flexible and responsive enough to reorient learners very quickly, even during class time, and to create activities that are motivating and effective in terms of learning. The impact on assessment is evident. Digital tools play a major role in this new paradigm, but they can also lead to problems in the students' work if they do not identify with the target digital tools. Learning foreign languages (FL) is becoming more communicative and interactive. In this sense, online platforms, mobile applications, and multimedia resources offer tremendous opportunities to develop multiple skills and diversify knowledge influenced by social and professional demands. This research shows the results of studies carried out in recent years with students of the Media Studies degree at the Higher School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (Portugal) in FL courses. We will introduce the active teaching methods used, discuss the pedagogical devices, lesson plans and choices made regarding the digital tools used, and list the difficulties encountered by the teachers and the major challenges they had to tackle in order to guarantee and maintain the students’ motivation and commitment throughout the course. Keeping these ideas in mind, the assessment of skills and knowledge also needs to evolve to better guarantee the fulfilment of the learning objectives. In conclusion, the risks created by this deep and extremely rapid evolution are inherent to the extraordinary opportunities to rethink FL learning and test new activities characterised by promoting creativity at the HE level. The key factor lies in the adaptability of all the participants involved in the process, the willingness to move ahead, away from the comfort zone of traditional approaches and to innovate in a reasonable and effective way.
- Security and Privacy Framework for a Cloud Native PlatformPublication . Takagi, Yuka Mouro; Caldeira, Filipe Manuel Simões; Henriques, João Pedro MenoitaThere has been a growing adoption of cloud-native platforms as an essential trend in developing and operating modern applications. These applications stand out for their benefits, such as agility and flexibility in the development and imple mentation of services, support for dynamic scalability, and reduction in operational costs, as well as the possibility of integration with distributed and high-availability environments. However, the distributed and automated nature of the platforms has increased the attack surface and the complexity of protecting sensitive data in an environment where multiple services and users are integrated. Risks include the possibility of data breaches through incorrect or vulnerable configurations in containers and microservices. To avoid privilege escalation, the need arose to manage identity and access efficiently. Guaranteed confidentiality, integrity and availability of data in compliance with global data protection regula tions, such as the General Data Protection Regulation, mitigating legal risks and protecting user privacy. This scenario raises the need to improve their security and privacy mechanisms to mitigate vulnerabilities and protect cloud-native environments. In that aim, the proposal of this project aims to carry out a state-of-the-art on privacy and security in cloud-native applications, proposing and evaluating a security framework. To analyse the results, the framework was validated through specific test scenar ios that demonstrated the effectiveness of the applied security methods in mitigating vulnerabilities and enforcing robust security policies.
- Enhancing Financial Product Recommendations through Chatbots and Large Language Models: A User-Centric ApproachPublication . Pereira, Pedro Manuel Noutel; Cunha, Carlos Augusto da SilvaIn an era where the intersection of artificial intelligence and digital finance is be coming increasingly relevant, the application of Large Language Models (LLM) to investor risk profiling is a revolutionary possibility. Traditional risk profiling meth ods rely too heavily on structured questionnaires, which fail to capture the nuances of investor behaviour, resulting in stereotyped categorization and more often than not, inaccurate representations of risk tolerance. This thesis explores how LLMs, specifically using OpenAI GPT series, can enhance the accuracy and personalisa tion of risk assessment models by leveraging natural language understanding and adaptive learning capabilities. This study explains the limitations of conventional profiling techniques and pro poses an LLM-based model that is dynamic in nature and adjusts according to in vestors’ responses, making the classification more precise with interactive discussion. To identify the effectiveness of the model proposed, the Morningstar risk profile is taken as a training and testing dataset for the LLM, while the traditional approach is analyzed, based on Google Forms, for comparing dynamic and static models. The results indicate that LLMs can significantly contribute to investor profiling by providing a conversational, real-time assessment process that complements the accuracy and user engagement, rendering the monitoring process more personalized. They also show that LLM achieves a significant improvement in investor profiling through a more flexible and interactive classification procedure. The model out performs conventional methods in cases where investor responses are ambiguous or subjective, ensuring better alignment with risk tolerance. In addition, it was ob served that the GPT-based classification tends to be conservative in the case of uncertain responses, which can serve to avoid excessive risk-taking. These results validate the potential of leveraging LLMs to augment financial advisory services by providing a more accurate and responsive risk assessment to individual investor profiles. By demonstrating the advantages and limits of AI-based investor profiling, the thesis contributes to the growing body of literature on LLM application for making financial decisions. The findings pinpoint the transition from rigid, questionnaire based questionnaires to adaptive, context-aware systems, with new potentials for augmenting financial advisory services in an increasingly digitalized economy.
