Publication . Araújo, Lia; Fonseca, Susana; Amante, Maria João
In an increasingly aging world, the effort to prepare future professionals for work with older persons starts to be a concern of higher education institutions. This article comments on the importance of experiential learning for preparing Social Education students to intervene with older people and presents an activity piloted at a Polytechnic University of Portugal. About 40 older persons from nursing homes came to a class in order to experiment the games developed during previous classes by the students. In order to understand the benefits of experimenting the games with older persons for the students, 37 students have answered a questionnaire about the importance of this learning activity. Findings on their assessment showed that the experience was generally positive, with all students rating as very important/important for their learning. Through open-ended questions the most mentioned benefits of the activity were the opportunity to social interact, to have contact with older persons, to develop in practice something theoretically conceived in the classroom, and to stimulate older persons. Through closed-ended questions the level of accordance with the pedagogical aims of the activity were very high, with 32 (86.5%) totally agreeing that it served to interact with older persons and 24 (64.9%) agreeing that the activity made them to realize if they like this area of intervention. The authors describe the impact this kind of activity may have on the knowledge about older persons, skills for motivating a group activity and also students’ beliefs, attitudes, and values related to working with older adults.

  • The cost per patient in a long-life unit and maintenance
Publication . Fonseca, Susana; Duarte, Filipe
With the increase in average life expectancy, care for the chronically ill has become an important area in the context of health services. Cost accounting in the health care area is proving to be fundamental as an information tool for decision making, in a sector where managers are increasingly encouraged to provide more and better care at lower prices. With the creation of the National Network of Integrated Continuous Care (RNCCI), it is the Long Term Care and Maintenance Units (ULDM) that receive more dependent patients, in need of comfort care and palliative actions. There are studies that ensure that the implementation of a palliative model reduces costs and makes the management and use of human and material resources more efficient. It is a quantitative and descriptive study, of retrospective character, whose general objectives were: to develop a comparative study between the practices in use in the Institution; to standardize monitoring strategies; to propose a health management model that takes into consideration the reduction of suffering and the efficiency of resources. The last 30 days of users' lives were analyzed, in terms of resources used. We calculated a daily co-participation value per user higher than the co-participated value. We concluded that the financing due to ULDM does not take into account the real needs of users, requiring institutions to allocate human resources and materials higher than the co-funded.
  • Nonprofit Organizations: Management Vulnerabilities
Publication . Fonseca, Susana; A P Duarte, Filipe; Portugal Teixeira, Helena Margarida
This article seeks to investigate the vulnerability of the directors of Social Organizations (SO). Specifically, this to characterize the directions of the SO, to understand how the management of these organizations is carried out and, further, to understand their view on the adoption of strategies. Additionally, the organizational culture is characterized. We opted for qualitative methods and used the methodology associated with content analysis to examine the information collected from a sample of SO directors in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, namely, the Residential Structures for the Elderly (RSE), in order to analyze the weaknesses of the directions in the management of these SOs. The results of the case study partially confirm what was predicted in the theory, that is, the SOs are currently faced with several challenges and it is essential to adopt strategies in order to overcome these same challenges. What can be seen is that, although the directors aspire to an efficient and effective service provision, there are several challenges imposed on the directors, calling for the adequacy /improvement of management in the SO. Corroborating the literature, in the study we found that the directions of the SO consider that the increase in competition, the hiring and professionalization of Human Resources (HR), sustainability, the establishment of partnerships and the diversification of funding sources are presented as their own. greatest vulnerabilities. Thus, the managements should seek solutions to face the complexity that involves the management of all organizational processes, attesting that the challenges and requirements of preparing, planning and organizing all resources are great. What has been seen is the adoption of strategic planning at different levels and levels of conducive effectiveness that seek to address the needs of organizations.
