- Factors Affecting the Body Mass Index in Adolescents in Portuguese SchoolsPublication . Guiné, Raquel; Fernandes, Sofia; Ferreira, Manuela; Cardoso, Ana Paula; Abrantes, José LuísThe prevalence of overweight and obesity among children is increasing; hence, it was aimed to assess the Body Mass Index (BMI) in school children aged from 10 to 18 years for girls and to 17 for boys, as well as to identify the factors influencing BMI. This study included 742 students who answered a questionnaire previously approved for application in schools. The results showed some sociodemographic factors associated with BMI classes: age, school year, practicing high competition sport, being federate in a sport or having a vegetarian diet. The educational factors associated with BMI classes included only seminars given at school by a nutritionist. Behavioural factors significantly associated with BMI included: learning in classes, playing in the open air, reading books or use of internet. As conclusion, the results demonstrated that several factors affect BMI, and hence some actions could be taken in order to change them so as to reduce the prevalence of overweight, namely reinforcing the role of school and a more active participation of nutritionists in the education of the adolescents.
- Foreign language skills: a challenge for the economyPublication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa, Ana Maria; Oliveira, Ana Maria; Amante, Susana; Oliveira, Isabel; Abrantes, José Luís; Pato, Maria Lúcia; Amaral, Odete; Fidalgo, SusanaAwareness of the fact that multilingualism opens doors to new markets and new business opportunities is not an original phenomenon, but the various works produced with a view to its being acknowledged are still little publicized and granted little practical use also. Showing mastery of communicative skills in several foreign languages is always valuable for the market economy, not only in terms of sales and marketing, but also in order to reach new target groups and establish lasting strategic relationships. The purpose of this article is to provide a general overview of the studies carried out in this context, focusing in particular on aspects such as the increasingly obvious relationship between in force language practices of a diversified nature and the proper functioning of businesses. Equally important is the mastery of language skills, seen as an important driving force of cross-border cooperation, as well as the development of an emotional culture within the business world, propitious to the implementation of efficient language management strategies, which are clearly beneficial inasmuch as the market economy is concerned.
- Foreign languages and employability: a complex relationship. Case study in the region of Viseu (Portugal)Publication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa, Ana Maria; Oliveira, Ana Maria; Amante, Susana; Abrantes, José Luís; Pato, Lúcia; Amaral, Maria Odete; Relvas, Susana; Fidalgo, SusanaThe challenges of today's societies when it comes to employability and to the reality of the current labour market are more and more delicate and diversified. One of the major commitments we expect from higher education is to prepare its students to face this kind of complexity, understanding its nuances and having the capacity to adapt quickly to situations which are common in companies’ lives. From this perspective, the assessment of the impact that the mastery of FL (foreign languages) among our students can have on the different business sectors becomes paramount. It involves reorganising the work carried out with the students during their academic path and raising awareness of future professionals so they may understand the importance of obtaining and mastering communicative skills in foreign languages that will provide them with the right tools to ensure an effective response to the requirements they will have to meet when they apply for a job. The close connection that exists between higher education institutions and the business world also allows the companies to realize that they should (re)think their recruitment policy in order to take into account the importance of foreign languages. Bearing this in mind, the project "Foreign Languages and Employability" (FLE), that will be presented in this article, started in January 2017, at the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (IPV), in Portugal. It focuses on creating a closer relationship with the local business community in order to understand its needs regarding foreign languages. The aim of the project is to strengthen the more practical aspects of the students’ education to ensure the graduates’ employability and a successful professional development. Data collection is carried out through the analysis of job offers, through the replies given to online surveys and through semi-structured interviews. The project includes representatives of the different IPV schools (Agrarian, Education, Health, Technology and Management) working in different sectors of the institution.
- Higher education students’ dropout intention: relational factors and life managementPublication . Ferreira, Manuela; Margarida Campos, Sofia; Guiné, Raquel; Duarte, João; Abrantes, José Luís; Rosário Cabral, Lídia; Balula, JessicaSchool dropouts are a problem with which educational systems have been struggling over the last years. This issue, that may jeopardize the quality of the school institution and of the education system itself, tends to get more and more serious and may be related to the students’ Quality of Academic Life (QAL) and to the formal nature of the learning processes. To identify the relationship between the Quality of Academic Life and higher education students’ dropout intentions and to analyse the impact of some socio-demographic variables on higher education students’ dropout intention were the main objectives that were defined for this study. A quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study was conducted. In order to collect the data that will be used in our study, we used a questionnaire that allowed us to gather information about the demographic characterization of the students and of their parents and the Brazilian Reasons for Higher Education Dropout Scale (M-ES; 2015). The sample consists of 891 students from polytechnic higher education institutions who were attending courses in different scientific fields. Participants are mostly female (68.2%), with a mean age of 19.68 years (± 2.34 years). Students who are ≤ 19 years old are those who show a better quality of life in dimension that involve their personal and interpersonal lives, their study conditions, their institutional life and their overall quality of life. Female students exhibit higher ratings when they refer to the quality of their personal life, their career, their study conditions, to their institutional and their overall quality of life, while male students reveal a better interpersonal quality of life. The causes of school dropout in higher education are multiple and the implementation of interventions that can provide students with an easier and better academic and institutional integration are increasingly important, a procedure that will involve the strengthening of the support provided by the academic services in order to better monitor and optimize processes and to provide more information about the requirements of academic life.
- Holistic tourism: Motivations, self-image and satisfactionPublication . Rocha, Gabriel; Seabra, Cláudia; Silva, Carla; Abrantes, José LuísHolistic tourism has become a new and alternative form of tourism and an important trend among tourists who seek programs and experiences that would allow them to achieve balance between mind, body and soul. Choosing holistic tourism means that a tourist can enjoy a different and full experience which goes beyond the simple contact with cultures, people, places or landscapes. It focuses on self-transformation and on an attempt of people understanding more about themselves. It is crucial we understand each person´s view about this new type of tourism since this perspective will surely bring potential new investors to this product. Knowing what every tourist values, feels and needs- in terms of personal fulfillment- can turn this new type of tourism into a competitive one. This study includes an empirical research conducted through questionnaires to 300 holistic tourists in four different Portuguese destinations: Azores, Gerês, Lisbon and Algarve. The results allowed a better understanding of the holistic tourists’ characteristics, their main motivations, self-image perception and satisfaction levels while taking part in holistic tourism.
