Celestino, Tadeu; Leitão, José; Pereira, AntoninoThe understanding of sport excellence has always provided an intense debate about the underlying factors. However, in sport orienteering, research in the field of excellence has been scarce. This study sought to identify the determining factors in the acquisition, development, and maintenance of excellence in orienteering. Developed under the qualitative analysis, semi-structured interviews were applied to a group of ten elite Iberian coaches and a group of fourteen elite athletes from the national teams of Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, France, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania, and Latvia. The results identify that, similarly, coaches and athletes consider secondary factors associated with socio-contextual aspects, such as family, friends / peers and coaches, and sociocultural aspects as the major determinants determining orienteering excellence. On the other hand, they recognize that among the primary factors, psychological factors and sports preparation are the main variables that directly influence performance of excellence. They also stress the need for interaction between the various factors for the acquisition, development, and maintenance of excellence in orienteering. Supported by these results, we may conclude that excellence in orientation presents a multidimensional matrix and its effective implementation is determined by the succe.
- Elite coaches views on factors contributing to excellence in orienteeringPublication . Celestino, Tadeu; Leitão, José; Sarmento, Hugo; Routen, Ash; Pereira, AntoninoIn the sport of orienteering, the studies in the context of sporting excellence are still scarce. Investigations carried out to date have been focused on the isolated analysis of specific factors contributing to excellence. The aim of this study therefore was to identify factors that coaches consider most prevalent in the development and maintenance of excellence in this sport. Ten elite level Portuguese and Spanish orienteering coaches completed semi-structured interviews and data were analysed using content analysis. Results showed coaches placed great emphasis on a set of personal factors, designated as primary influencing factors, including psychological attributes, sports preparation and genetic factors. Coaches also identified environmental factors that exert a secondary influence, with particular emphasis on the family, the sociocultural aspects and peer and friendship groups. Finally, elite coaches recognized the need of interaction and interconnection between these primary and secondary influencing factors for the development and maintenance of excellence in orienteering.
- Em busca da excelência no desporto adaptado. Um estudo de casoPublication . Celestino, Tadeu; Pereira, AntoninoThe adapted sport has gradually to take its place in cultural sports practices of society. Underlying this recognition are the achievement of excellence systematically perpetuated by disabled athletes at major sporting events such as the Paralympic Games, granting them social recognition and inclusion. However, the understanding of excellence in this context is still very incipient. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the factors that underlie the excellence in the adapted sport, starting from the analysis of the life course of Mário Trindade Paralympic athlete. This study was developed under the paradigm of the "Life Stories" methodology. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview. We used the technique of content analysis with the software Nvivo 11. Thus, results analysis allows us to conclude that the excellence of this athlete is based on a set of factors, which by their primary action in the performance of excellence, are associated with deliberate practice, diversification of practice, free practice and psychological factors On the other hand, by its secondary modeling action in the performance of excellence, we identify the socio-cultural constraints and the significant people as important modelers of excellence.

Celestino, Tadeu; Pereira, Antonino; Ribeiro, Esperança JalesThe diversity, complexity and intensity of current social situations demand from the school, and particularly from the teachers, assertive and diversified responses. Nevertheless, there is some scientific unanimity regarding the existence of various constraints, felt and reported by physical education teachers (PE) regarding their competence to implement inclusive processes in their classes. Given the above, it is increasingly pertinent to revisit the reflection on inclusive PE teacher training, particularly at the level of organization and structuring of curricula, with regard to the development of skills to intervene with students with disabilities in the training of PE teachers. Thus, this investigation aimed to study the representations that are associated with the training of PE teachers for inclusion. Developed under the interpretive paradigm, the study used a semi-structured interview applied to a group of 3 university professors from 4 Portuguese university institutions with PE teacher training as a data collection instrument. This group of professors had an average age of 53±13.49 years and 20±19 years of university teaching service. Data was submitted to the content analysis technique (Bardin, 2008). The results identify the need to model the dimensions: i) of initial training, particularly with regard to constraints, strategies for inclusion in PE and training and training approaches; ii) the profile of the Inclusive Physical Education Teacher, emphasizing human and ethical training, motivation, mastery of technical skills, specific knowledge of disability, multidisciplinary scientific knowledge, adaptability and being a promoter/facilitator of inclusion; iii) continuous training, where the reasons for participation and non-participation are highlighted; iv) the aspirations for initial training, recognizing the need to develop practical training in a real context, the existence of long-term curricular units and the need for guided pedagogical practice in a real context.
- The Inclusive Physical Education Teacher Profile: an exploratory studyPublication . Celestino, Tadeu; Ribeiro, Esperança Jales; Pereira, AntoninoLittle is known about the particularities and specificities that should characterize the physical education (PE) teacher who aims at inclusion in their classes (European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education (2011). Thus, this exploratory study aimed to identify the distinctive characteristics that can characterize the inclusive physical education teacher profile (IPETP).
- Towards an Inclusive Ethics in Physical Education.Publication .
