- Mom and me through the looking glassPublication . Sousa, Catarina Carneiro deThis article focuses on the collaborative work of the artists CapCat Ragu and Meilo Minotaur in Metaverse environments. The aim is to describe and analyse their cooperative creative process from the perspective of one of the artists/authors, walking through three artistic works that were made in the Second Life® region of Delicatessen: ‘de Maria, de Mariana, de Madalena...’, ‘Petrified’ and ‘Meta_Body’. These projects reflect two aspects of the artists’ work – on the one hand avatar art, and on the other the creation of virtual environments. The text also reflects on the concept of shared creativity, which the artists propose through their avatar creations.
- The Meta_Body ProjectPublication . Sousa, Catarina Carneiro deMeta_Body is a project first held in online virtual environment and in a “real life” art exhibition, and now carrying on in the metaverse creative flux. The project addresses two aspects — the constitution of virtual corporality and the shared creative process of avatar building, sharing, transformation and embodiment.
- Undergraduate Social Education Student’s Perspectives about the ProfessionPublication . Ribeiro, Esperança Jales; Felizardo, Sara; Martins, Emília; Fernandes, Rosina; Amante, Maria João; Cordeiro, LeandraHigher education institutions, responsible for training social educators, should ensure the construction of a profile marked by their technical versatility and whose socio-educational intervention is directed at all people, regardless of their situations in life. Reflection on the construction of this profile is fundamental given the difficulties of identity that the profession faces. In this context, we sought to develop a study which would allow us to identify how the students of a degree course in Social Education characterise this professional, in order to reflect on the contribution of training provided by the institution concerned and, if necessary, make the adjustments arising from the results. This is a qualitative, exploratory study, using an unstructured questionnaire applied to a convenience sample of 140 Portuguese students of the three years of a degree course in Social Education. Its emerging categorical content analysis was performed using the NVivo software, version 11. The main results point to a broad vision of the profession and are not limited to the work geared to specific populations or issues, valuing the relevance of the professional in the field of non-assistance socio-educational intervention. The main area of overlap between training objectives and students’ perceptions about practice allows the impact of training to be positively assessed, despite possible curricular adjustments resulting from further analysis, including the need to reinforce community intervention, undervalued by students, even though it plays a key role for social educators.
- Student’s Perceptions of the Community Impact of Social Education Degree InternshipPublication . Jales Ribeiro, Esperança; Martins, Emília; Amante, Maria João; Felizardo, Sara; Fernandes, Rosina; Araújo, LiaEvaluating the impact of an intervention is a very important stage in social educators’ practice, since it allows them to improve the quality of socio-educational projects. The aim of this study is to rethink the internship of the social education degree through students’ perceptions about the impact of their projects in the community. This is a qualitative and exploratory study using documental analysis of 50 internship final reports of a social education degree from a Portuguese polytechnic higher education institution and whose emerging categorical content analysis was performed with NVivo software. The analysis revealed four distinct indicators linked to the project (accomplished objectives, evaluation of activities, sustainability and innovation), the target group (participation, motivation and benefits), the institution (satisfaction of collaborators, improved dynamic, routines and space enhancements), and the students (relational, reflexive and planning skills; satisfaction). It also revealed instruments, feedback, observation, document analysis and case reports as means of verification. The use of indicators related to the project’s objectives, the changes perceived from the benefits in the target-group and in the institution, and the interveners’ level of satisfaction should be noted as positive. Given the inconsistency in the use of formal assessment instruments, the results show the need to strengthen students’ mobilisation of project assessment skills in order to improve the quality of undergraduate education.
- Risk of malnutrition in a sample of community-dwelling elderlyPublication . Martins, Emília; Mendes, Francisco; Fernandes, Rosina; Magalhães, CátiaPortuguese studies evidence situations of malnutrition risk among the elderly, with negative implications for the aging process. It’s important to increase the diagnosis and to identify variables that may mediate the process, in order to sustain socioeducational interventions.
- Well-being and physical activity in health young adultsPublication . Martins, Emília; Mendes, Francisco; Fernandes, Rosina; Magalhães, Cátia; Araújo, PatríciaRecent studies show a positive relationship between physical activity and well-being, although mediated by other variables. The most negative self-reported well-being is in the age group of 18-25 years.
- Virtual corporeality and aesthetic experiencePublication . Sousa, Catarina Carneiro deThe experience of the body in the Metaverse is not always an experience of the flesh, at least regarding the avatar. Even though virtual experiences can trigger a physical dimension of the senses, these sensations are lived by the body in front of the screen, rather than by the avatar’s body, which may function as an expressive element. The avatar may be crucial in communicating with others (as language) and play a role in the users’ access and interaction with the virtual world (as experience). A tension between language and experience opens up a new and fundamental aesthetic territory in the avatar, demanding a reconfiguration of concepts and processes involved in its creation and embodiment. This article aims to explore how virtual corporeality may emerge from this tension in the manipulation of avatars in Creative Collaborative Virtual Environments (CCVE), what affordances enable this emergence and how it impacts aesthetic and creative experience.
- Aging in Online Communities: A Systematic Literature Review of Design RecommendationsPublication . Veloso, Ana; Ferreira, Sónia; Costa, Liliana; Mealha, Óscar; Carlos, SantosThe increase of computer-mediated communication use and the aging population has led to a renewed interest in online communities and social networks for active aging and social support in daily living. However, a systematic understanding of the design recommendations in Senior Online Communities is still lacking in scientific documentation. The aim of this paper is to identify the design recommendations used in online communities that support active aging. In addition, this paper highlights some of the benefits of using online communities by older adults. Twenty-three papers published between January 2015 and May 2020 in English-language, peer-reviewed publications, met inclusion criteria. The review presents a set of recommendations for designing online communities to enhance older adults’ social interactions. A process that aims for “engagement” is suggested to strategically guide the design of Senior Online Communities: Interacting – Sense of Belonging (Role-playing, Storytelling, and Legacy) – Engaging.
- Perspectivas de Professores de Matemática sobre o Humor e o seu Valor EducacionalPublication . Menezes, Luís; Fernandes, José António; Viseu, Floriano; Ribeiro, António Augusto Gaspar; Flores, PabloAt present, humour has an increasing acceptance and appreciation, because we recognize the positive contributions to the well-being of people in contexts as diverse as health, business, and entertainment. What happens in Education and, in particular, in Mathematics teaching? To answer this question, we designed this quantitative study with a sample of 1088 Iberian mathematics teachers (Portuguese and Spanish), that teach from the early years through to higher education. Through the use of a questionnaire, we seek to find out if Portuguese and Spanish teachers who teach Mathematics, throughout the various levels of education, appreciate humor, what perspective they have of it and its educational value, and if they use it in teaching the discipline. The study also sought to determine if the teaching level in which teachers teach mathematics has an influence on the perception and use of humor for instructional purposes. The study also investigates if there are any significant differences between Portuguese and Spanish teachers in relation to these aspects. The results show that the overwhelming majority of teachers, at all levels of teaching, recognize the meaning of humor, consider that they have a sense of humor, justify its use in mathematics teaching and have already seen it being used or used it in their classes, with the goal of creating a good learning environment and making students think. The study reveals differences among teachers at different levels of teaching, indicating that there is a greater predisposition of teachers in the initial years, in comparison to other years, to value and use humor in mathematics teaching. The study also reveals differences between Portuguese and Spanish teachers, with Portuguese presenting a higher average agreement in most items.
