- ‘It’s a lot of work’: A tailor’s measuring tape in the dollhousePublication . Figueiredo, Maria Pacheco; Menezes, Luís; Gomes, Helena Margarida dos Santos Vasconcelos; martins, ana patrícia; Ribeiro, António; Marchese, Myriam; Soares, Isabel; Zhang, LinStructured around Bishop’s six fundamental mathematical activities, this book brings together examples of mathematics education from a range of countries to help readers broaden their view on maths and its interrelationship to other aspects of life. Considering different educational traditions and diverse contexts, and illustrating theory through the use of real-life vignettes throughout, this book encourages readers to review, reflect on, and critique their own practice when conducting activities on explaining, counting, measuring, locating, designing, and playing. Aimed at early childhood educators and practitioners looking to improve the mathematics learning experience for all their students, this practical and accessible guide provides the knowledge and tools to help every child.
- Perspectives of future teachers of early years from two Portuguese institutions on the history of mathematicsPublication . Costa, Cecília; Menezes, Luís; Ribeiro, António; Pinto, H.; martins, ana patrícia; Clain, T.; Gomes, Helena Margarida dos Santos Vasconcelos; Aires, A. P.This paper presents some results of the project (H)ISTO é MATEMÁTICA — História da Matemática no Ensino da Matemática (History of Mathematics in teaching), a research project that has as one of its main goals: to describe the initial and continuous training of Portuguese teachers in History of Mathematics (HM), as well as their conceptions and practices on the use of HM in teaching. In particular, we present the results of applying an online questionnaire to a group of 259 Mathematics teachers from the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education in Portugal (5th and 6th grades). With this survey our purpose is precisely to characterize teachers’: (i) training in HM; and (ii) conceptions and practices about the utilization of HM in the classroom. Notice that this study intends to respond, among others, the lack of studies on this subject, particularly at the level of the first years. We use quantitative data analysis methods, namely descriptive statistics. The main conclusions of this study are: 1) most teachers considered the training in HM obtained in their higher education as non-existent or reduced; 2) the overwhelming majority categorized as non-existent or reduced their continuous education in HM; 3) most teachers reported using HM as a didactic resource in Mathematics class (many of them in a regular basis); 4) teachers resorted more frequently to textbooks and favoured the use of HM in the introduction to new mathematical subject; 5) regarding to the potential of using HM in teaching, teachers evaluated the didactic potential of HM very positively; the biggest constraints were related to the extension of the official curricula, the scarcity of support materials and the difficulty of evaluation.

Figueiredo, Maria; Marchese, M.; Gomes, Helena Margarida dos Santos Vasconcelos; Menezes, Luís; martins, ana patrícia; Ribeiro, AntónioThe study was developed in Master’s Degree in Early Childhood and Primary Education, during the praticum, with children from 3 to 6 years old, focusing on the importance of play. The organization of the educational environment is one of the dimensions of Early Childhood Pedagogy and provides integrated and contextualized learning, namely through opportunities to play significantly in spaces and materials organized with intention, enjoying relationships and time that are also the focus of the pedagogical organization. The study aimed to understand the mathematical activity that children developed with a measuring tape and what meanings they attributed to it. The measuring tape was introduced, without explanation, into the dolls' corner. The qualitative study relayed on participant observation and short interviews with the 18 children in the group. The results showed that the tape was included in the children's play and that different meanings were attributed to it. One group recognized and used the measuring tape to measure; a second group recognized this tool, associated it with measurement, but was not sure how to use it; finally, a third group played with the tape without recognizing its function. The complexity of the meanings attributed by children and their ability to share and co-construct meaning during play reveal the potential of this activity and the importance of enriching the play areas, as well as of the opportunity to reflect on their experiences.
- O humor em manuais escolares de MatemáticaPublication . Menezes, Luís; Ribeiro, António; Oliveira, Ana Maria; Delplancq, Véronique; Santos vasconcelos gomes, Helena; martins, ana patrícia; Matos, Isabel Aires de; Viseu, Floriano; Flores, Pablo; Balula, João PauloHumor has a wide presence in people's lives, combining affective and cognitive elements with the intention of well-being. In addition to the leisure contexts, humor has also been used in contexts associated with work, namely schools, placed at the service of teaching. Since school textbooks are a resource widely used by teachers, particularly those of mathematics, it seems pertinent to us: (I) to access the usage of humor in Mathematics school textbooks; and (ii) describe the humor used in textbooks and discuss their didactic framework. For this, we submitted, to content analysis, four textbooks of Mathematics (of the 4th and 5th grades) with wide national diffusion. The results reveal that humor, both in the text and in the illustration, has practically no expression in the textbooks. Even so, all textbooks value, at the illustration level, light-hearted situations, presenting repeatedly, people laughing.
- Matemática no percurso formativo de futuros professores dos anos iniciais aPublication . martins, ana patrícia; Gomes, Helena Margarida dos Santos Vasconcelos; Menezes, Luís; Costa, C.; Pinto, H.; Ribeiro, António; Clain, T.Considering the importance of History of Mathematics (HM) in the Mathematics teaching and the need for its approach in the initial training of teachers, this study aims to: characterize the use of HM in the educational trajectory of future teachers (FT) in basic and secondary levels; describe their training in HM in the Basic Education (BE) degree; and identify these FT's conceptions about the importance of using HM in Mathematics teaching. In this study, 63 female FTs participated in this study, graduated in BE in Portuguese institutions and starting a professional master's degree. Data collection resulted from the application of a questionnaire, with two parts: Teaching/Training with/in HM; and Conceptions about the contributions of HM to Mathematics teaching. The results reveal that 68% of the FT consider non-existent, or limited to episodic moments, the use of HM in their Mathematics classes during their primary and secondary education; FT also consider that training in HM during the BE course was frequent (52%) or solid (17%). The use of HM is evaluated positively because facilitates the understanding of the contents, illustrate the usefulness, importance and connections of Mathematics, and allows different approaches and developing transversal skills.
