- Active parents, active children: The importance of parental organized physical activity in children’s extracurricular sport participationPublication . Rodrigues, Daniela; Padez, Cristina; Machado-Rodrigues, Aristides M.This study investigated whether parental participation in organized and unorganized physical activity (PA) was associated with children’s participation in extracurricular sport. The sample comprised 834 parents and their children (aged 6–10 years), living in central Portugal. Questionnaires assessed parental PA (organized and unorganized) and extracurricular sport participation in children (number of sports and frequency of participation). Multinomial logistic regression was applied to assess associations between parental and child physical behaviors. Having both parents active was significantly associated with frequent participation in more sports both in girls and boys but a strong relation according to gender was found. The odds of boys practicing more than one sport and more times per week were higher if they had an active father. Girls with physically active mothers, particularly with mothers practicing organized PA in a regular way, were engaged in more sports and practiced sport more times per week. The type of PA practiced by the parents was not related to boys’ participation in sport. Future interventions should be family-based and focus on the promotion of higher levels of parental PA, including organized, in order to improve their children’s active behaviors.
- Adiposity and Physical Activity Do Not Mediate the Longitudinal Association Between Sleep Quality and Arterial Thickness Among AdolescentsPublication . Cayres, Suziane; Vanderlei, Luiz Carlos; Machado-Rodrigues, Aristides; Werneck, André; Barbosa, Maurício; Fernandes, RomuloStudy Objectives: Sleep is a behavior with the potential to affect cardiovascular health. Given the fact that adiposity and physical activity seem to be related to cardiovascular risk factors during growth, it is still unclear whether sleep quality could affect arterial thickness among adolescents. Thus, the objective of the current study was to analyze the effect of sleep quality on arterial thickness and identify the possible mediation role of physical activity and trunk fat in adolescents. Methods: This was a longitudinal study (12-month follow-up) composed of 71 adolescents with ages ranging from 11 to 14 years at baseline (absence of any known chronic diseases, and no regular medicine use). All variables were assessed twice (baseline and 12-month follow-up): (1) sleep quality was reported using the Mini Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ); (2) physical activity was estimated using pedometers; (3) trunk fat was assessed using a densitometry scanner; and (4) carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and femoral intima-media thickness (FIMT) were assessed using ultrasonography. Results: Adolescents who presented poor sleep quality demonstrated significantly increased FIMT (r = .299, 95% confidence interval .071 to .498) and for every point increase in the MSQ score from baseline to follow-up there was a 1.12% (95% confidence interval 0.26 to 1.98) increase in FIMT over time. Moreover, trunk fat and physical activity did not mediate the association between sleep quality and arterial thickness, but FIMT had a positive and independent relationship only with trunk fat. Conclusions: Sleep quality was positively associated with FIMT among adolescents, whereas physical activity and adiposity did not mediate this process.

Por último, entendem que a arte e suas diversas expressões estéticas são importantes na formação acadêmica do engenheiro no que diz respeito à criação de projetos inovadores, uma vez que favorece a inspiração, a inovação e a integração em equipes.
- Art Education: Two Decades of Creation, Evaluation and Application of an Interdisciplinary Method of Artistic LiteracyPublication . Leonido, Levi; Pereira, Antonino; Mendes, Liliana; Rodrigues, João Bartolomeu; Morgado, Elsa Maria GabrielThe Interdisciplinary Method of Musical Literacy, Education and Artistic Awareness (MILMESA) is developed and applied essentially in higher education (artistic, cultural and teacher training courses), promoting effective endogenous (interarts) and exogenous interconnection (artistic and other non-artistic areas) of an inter and pluridisciplinary matrix, as well as assuming itself as a privileged vehicle of relationship and extension to the community in the frame of the making of artistic-cultural and pedagogical-didactic events in the European, Luso-Brazilian, Luso-African and Hispanic American territories. It was created, tested and evaluated in five consecutive quadrennia (2002–2023), being regularly adapted, adapted and added to according to the observed realities, evolving into the deepening of new concepts and models of intervention in these domains (e.g., Expressive and Proximal Didactics). Using the ethnographic method and the case study, and having the source of data collection as the document analysis of written and iconographic or visual sources (n = 1386) and participant observation, this study aimed to describe and analyse the application and evolution of MILMESA in terms of education and extension to the community. It was concluded that there was a need to promote, with greater regularity and scope, greater technological interaction via digital platforms and social networks, within the framework of the participation of external specialists (e-DEP) and the very experience of MILMESA’s experiences and initiatives, giving it a more meaningful and participatory range.
- Artistic-Cultural Perspectives in Technical-Professional Training at UTFPR-BrazilPublication . Auzani, Adriana Santos; Fernandes da Silva, Levi Leonido; Pereira, Antonino; Morgado, Maria GabrielIn this research, we intend to study the role of art in the creative process, in engineering courses at the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná, as a technological innovation factor. This qualitative research is characterised as a method for adopting a naturalistic and descriptive perspective. The sample is composed of students and graduates (10); teachers, coordinators and directors of Education of the Pato Branco Campus (10); Dean (1); Entrepreneurs (4). In the analysis and discussion of results from semi-structured interviews, we opted for Content Analysis, having in perspective the Theory of Social Representations of Moscovici (1978). Among the main conclusions, we highlight the valorisation of creative, interpersonal and communicative skills as fundamental competences in the formation of an engineer. It is also highlighted that the role of art in engineering can enhance creativity and constitute a factor of technological innovation. This can promote the imagination and the capacity for necessary and fundamental abstraction in the design of engineering projects and the communicational plan. The integration of art in formal training, at the moment, does not constitute an institutional option, nor does it contribute to a significant dialogical relationship between curricular activities and extracurricular artistic activities.
Celestino, Tadeu; Leitão, José; Pereira, AntoninoThe understanding of sport excellence has always provided an intense debate about the underlying factors. However, in sport orienteering, research in the field of excellence has been scarce. This study sought to identify the determining factors in the acquisition, development, and maintenance of excellence in orienteering. Developed under the qualitative analysis, semi-structured interviews were applied to a group of ten elite Iberian coaches and a group of fourteen elite athletes from the national teams of Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, France, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania, and Latvia. The results identify that, similarly, coaches and athletes consider secondary factors associated with socio-contextual aspects, such as family, friends / peers and coaches, and sociocultural aspects as the major determinants determining orienteering excellence. On the other hand, they recognize that among the primary factors, psychological factors and sports preparation are the main variables that directly influence performance of excellence. They also stress the need for interaction between the various factors for the acquisition, development, and maintenance of excellence in orienteering. Supported by these results, we may conclude that excellence in orientation presents a multidimensional matrix and its effective implementation is determined by the succe.
- Effects of theta-binaural beats auditory stimulation on creativity, psychological well-being and mood states of university students: Pilot studyPublication . Mendes, Liliana; Leonido, Levi; Pereira, Antonino; Morgado, Elsa GabrielThis study investigates the impact of theta-frequency binaural beats (BB) on creativity, mood, and psychological well-being in university students, addressing the growing interest and controversy surrounding this auditory stimulation technique. A quantitative, correlational, quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 26 university students aged 18–54 (96.2% female, 3.8% male). Participants listened to theta BB (6-Hz beat frequency on a 250 Hz carrier) for 20 minutes daily using the Binaural Beats App. Instruments included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the reduced Creative Personality Scale (EPC), the short Profile of Mood States Questionnaire (POMS), and the Psychological Well-Being Manifestation Scale (EMMBEP). Results revealed significant improvements in creativity, psychological well-being, and reduced total mood disturbance after exposure to theta BB. Significant differences in total mood disturbance across assessment moments highlighted the intervention's time-sensitive benefits. The study highlights the potential of theta-frequency BB to enhance psychological well-being, mood, and creativity among university students. These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the utility of BB as a non-invasive tool for improving mental and emotional states. Theta BB may serve as an accessible and cost-effective method for promoting mental health and fostering creativity in educational and therapeutic settings.
- Emotional dimensions of eating behavior and quality of life in adolescents/youthPublication . Figueiredo, Anabela; Paciência, Eva; Sousa, Sandra; Martins, Emília; Fernanda, Martins; Mendes, FranciscoThe importance of eating behavior (EB) in quality of life is unquestionable. Hence, it will be interesting to identify the individual factors related to the emotional dimensions that influence the EB. This nonexperimental study aims to assess the relationship between eating behavior and the quality of life in adolescents and youth, namely the impact of the three eating emotional dimensions (restriction, disinhibition and hunger). Additionally, this paper discusses the socio educational intervention to promote healthy eating. This is an ex post facto study with a convenience sample of 108 Portuguese adolescents/youth with a mean age of 15.21 ± 1.42. The Portuguese version of the KINDL measuring quality of life and the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) measuring eating behavior and a sociodemographic questionnaire were applied on the sample. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS-IBM24, with a 95% confidence level. Results in the TFEQ revealed adolescents/youth with 1.84 ± .50, 1.99 ± .54, and 2.55 ± .56, respectively in the restriction, disinhibition and hunger. Adolescents/youth with low disinhibition and hunger in TFEQ showed better quality of life than individuals with higher levels of both eating emotional dimensions (p = .007 and p = .013, respectively). Restriction dimension seems independent of the quality of life. The relationship between the emotional dimensions of EB and quality of life justifies a socio educational intervention to promote a healthy eating behaviour among adolescents/youth. This relationship may be mediated by the effects of those dimensions on results on food balance and its organic repercussions. Thus, intervention should focus on awareness of those effects. However, this mediation needs to be better investigated.
- EXCELLENCE IN SPORT: A STUDY CENTERED ON THE LIFE STORY OF 14-TIME WORLD CHAMPION THIERRY GUEORGIOUPublication . Celestino, Tadeu Ferreira de Sousa Celestino; Leonido, Levi; Morgado, Elsa Gabriel; Pereira, AntoninoThis paper seeks to identify the factors and characteristics that determine the development and maintenance of excellence in orienteering, by examining the life of an athlete who has been a world champion 14 times. "Life Stories" were used as a method to collect data. The data was collected by conducting semi-structured interviews and an analysis of various documents. This data was then analyzed using the content analysis method. The results highlight the need for successful interaction between socio-contextual and socio-personal factors over time. Therefore, achieving excellence in orienteering is a multidimensional process that must be understood using a bio-psycho-socioaxiological perspective.
