- Women with a Voice: An analysis of the character Mollie Bidwell from the biography of Eça de QueirozPublication . Antunes Sobral, Filomena
- Cinebiography: Eça de Queiroz as a CharacterPublication . Antunes Sobral, FilomenaJosé Maria de Eça de Queiroz, a seminal figure in Portuguese literature, has been the subject of numerous cinematic and television adaptations, both within and beyond Portugal. Among these, the 2020 film O Nosso Cônsul em Havana (Our Consul in Havana) is particularly noteworthy for positioning the writer himself as its central character. This chapter offers a critical analysis of the film’s dramatization of Eça de Queiroz, situating it within the broader literary, cultural, and political milieu of nineteenth-century Portugal. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study integrates a sectoral narrative framework with film studies to examine the construction of the author’s persona on screen. Special attention is given to the depiction of Eça de Queiroz’s humanist and diplomatic traits, dimensions often overshadowed by his literary legacy. By foregrounding these aspects, the analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the biographical cinematic genre and its capacity to reveal nuanced interpretations of historical figures through fictional representation.
- Media literacy in early education: European policies and curricular differentiationPublication . Araújo, Catarina Liane; Aguiar, Cecília; Monteiro, LígiaThis article is the result of work carried out within the scope of Erasmus+ project Kit@: Media competency training for professionals in day-care centres and comparable institutions in rural areas of Europe. Its main objective is to describe ECE systems, curriculum guidelines, pre-service teacher training curricula and teacher profiles related to media education and ICT use in ECE across the Europe project partners from Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Portugal, and Slovakia. Data collection was carried out by documentary consultation of the curriculum guidelines of each country involved and a questionnaire on ICT use and media education in ECE, specifically developed for this purpose, answered by partners participating in the Kit@ project, and through consultation of official international reports (e.g., OECD, EURYDICE), who collected the data between January and July, 2018. Findings indicate there is a pedagogical area in all countries where the use of ICT and media education is referred to directly or indirectly in the ECE curriculum. However, in most countries, there are no guidelines for media education in initial education. Furthermore, the training of professionals and costs in ECE are quite different. Findings are discussed in terms of implications for media literacy practices in kindergarten across Europe.
- La producción urbana de alimentos en las ciudades portuguesas de los siglos XVI al XVIII: Viseu como caso de estudioPublication . Castilho, LilianaThe importance of urban gardens in Portugal, as a guarantee of sustainability and access to fresh produce, is based on a long tradition of urban and rural coexistence in Portuguese cities of medieval origin. If the street was always occupied by the surface of the buildings, the back of the plot was a space for a backyard and auxiliary structures that contributed to the production or transformation of food. These were usually confined spaces that wouldn't allow the production of wheat or similar crops, but would allow the rearing of small animals such as poultry and pigs, and the growing of vegetables and fruit. Analysis of the data for Viseu, a medium-sized Portuguese city, allows us to understand not only what was produced and how, but also the economic, social and health importance of this intramural food reserve.
- The Era of Smart LearningPublication . Meirinhos, Manuel; Loureiro, Ana ClaudiaThis chapter critically analyses the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on contemporary education and considers the transformations imposed by the post-digital era. Starting with the observation that AI is reshaping the how we access, produce, and apply knowledge, the chapter discusses the emergence of smart learning as a new educational paradigm. It explores two main models. The first is the integration of AI into traditional educational systems, which are limited by inherited practices. The second is a transformative vision that proposes a profound restructuring of education. The study adopts an exploratory approach grounded in a narrative review of the literature. The analysis identifies three dimensions — organisational, pedagogical, and ethical — that describe how AI is shaping new learning ecosystems and redefining the teacher’s role. The study concludes that AI should not be seen as a substitute, but as a catalyst for pedagogical practices centred on the student, creativity, and critical thinking.

- The Role of Social Media in Sustainable BrandingPublication . Santos, Sara; Vasconcelos, Maria de Almeida; Ferreira, Sónia; Augusto, Luísa; Santo, Pedro EspíritoConsumers increasingly expect brands to make a positive impact on communities and societies. Nowadays, communicating about corporate social responsibility can involve storytelling techniques, making the issues more understandable and relatable than straightforward and logical messages. However, in the academic field, research needs to gather and systematise the relationship between these topics and their influence on stakeholders' attitudes. This chapter aims to understand how stakeholders act towards storytelling content related to corporate social responsibility on social media. Thirteen academic papers were gathered from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, which were in English and openly accessible, fulfilling the inclusion criteria. These papers provided insights into stakeholders' perspectives on corporate social responsibility storytelling on social media. This study holds significant implications for businesses, emphasising the value of crafting narratives on social media.
- The Role of Social Responsibility on Consumer Engagement Through Fashion Brands' InstagramPublication . Santos, Sara; Silva, Paulo; Lopes, Margarida; T. Tarnanidis; E. Papachristou; M. Karypidis; V. IsmyrlisAt a time when consumers are becoming more aware of social and environmental responsibility, they are increasingly recognising the fashion industry's impact on the world. Based on this growing awareness, the response from fashion brands is to strategically use digital platforms to highlight their commitment to the issue of sustainability. Brands that consciously share this content on online platforms adopt an effective communication strategy, attracting greater engagement with their audience. In particular, the analysis in this study focuses on the Instagram presence of three notable brands: Naz, Isto, and Tentree. The results of this study affirm the positive impact of social responsibility on consumer engagement when it comes to the Instagram accounts of these fashion brands. This underlines the significant role that social responsibility plays in influencing consumer perceptions and interactions in the digital sphere.
