- Parent and student voice in evaluation and planning in schoolsPublication . Brown, M.; McNamara, G.; O'Brien, S.; Skerrit, C.; O'Hara, J.; Faddar, J.; Cinqir, S.; Vanhoof, J.; Figueiredo, Maria; Kurum, G.Current approaches to the regulation of schools in most jurisdictions tend to combine elements of external inspection with systems of internal self-evaluation. An increasingly important aspect of the theory and practice of both, but particularly the latter, revolves around the role of other actors, primarily parents and students, in the process. Using literature review and documentary analysis as the research method, this article explores the research literature from many countries around the concerns of schools and teachers about giving a more powerful voice to parents and pupils. Then, focusing on Ireland, this article tries to clarify three things, official policy concerning stakeholder voice in school self-evaluation and decision making, the efforts by schools to implement this policy and the response to date of school leaders and teachers to this rather changed environment. Using Hart’s ladder of genuine, as opposed to token, participation, it is argued that policy mandating parental and student involvement has evolved significantly, that schools have responded positively and that there is little evidence, as yet, of teacher concern or resistance. This response is explained by the low stakes and improvement-focused education environment; the controlled, structured and simplified nature of the self-evaluation process; and the limited extent of parental and student participation in decision making.
- MindMaths: learning mathematics in the early years through computational thinking and roboticsPublication . Gomes, Cristina Azevedo; Gomes, Helena Margarida dos Santos Vasconcelos; Figueiredo, Maria; Lucas, Antonio; Menezes, LuisMindMaths is an EU-funded project, started in 2020, with partners from Portugal, Italy, Turkey and Latvia, aiming to cope with math anxiety and problems with mathematics learning in primary education, using educational robotics. Throughout Flipped Learning Practices its focus is on initial primary teacher training, designing learning activities and resources to fulfill this challenge of preparing the future teachers to use robotics to release math anxiety. This paper presents an overview of the MindMaths Project and the main ideas underlying its development in the Portuguese context. It frames the more relevant learning issues in primary math education, presents the most significant initiative of programing and robotics in the Portuguese scene and discuss the potential that computational thinking and robotics offer for learning meaningful mathematics in the early years. It also presents a pilot study in a polytechnic school with the participation of 20 students, future teachers, discussing the main ideas of its development and results.
- Aprender na educação de infância brincando com uma fita métricaPublication . Figueiredo, Maria; Marchese, M.; Gomes, Helena Margarida dos Santos Vasconcelos; Menezes, Luís; martins, ana patrícia; Ribeiro, AntónioThe study was developed in Master’s Degree in Early Childhood and Primary Education, during the praticum, with children from 3 to 6 years old, focusing on the importance of play. The organization of the educational environment is one of the dimensions of Early Childhood Pedagogy and provides integrated and contextualized learning, namely through opportunities to play significantly in spaces and materials organized with intention, enjoying relationships and time that are also the focus of the pedagogical organization. The study aimed to understand the mathematical activity that children developed with a measuring tape and what meanings they attributed to it. The measuring tape was introduced, without explanation, into the dolls' corner. The qualitative study relayed on participant observation and short interviews with the 18 children in the group. The results showed that the tape was included in the children's play and that different meanings were attributed to it. One group recognized and used the measuring tape to measure; a second group recognized this tool, associated it with measurement, but was not sure how to use it; finally, a third group played with the tape without recognizing its function. The complexity of the meanings attributed by children and their ability to share and co-construct meaning during play reveal the potential of this activity and the importance of enriching the play areas, as well as of the opportunity to reflect on their experiences.
