- Caesarean section and neonatal care in the dog.Publication . Mota, M. S. G.; Vala, Helena; Esteves, F.; Cruz, R.; Pisco, S.; Carvalho, P.; Guerreiro, C.; Pacheco, M.; Judas, H.Caesarean section in breeding bitches is an increasingly common practice not only to ensure their future fertility but also the health and safety of offspring. Bitches with high genetic value are often submitted to this procedure. Following the bitch from the moment of mating to the moment of delivery and adequate nursing care of the newborn increases the neonatal survival rates.
- Calcinosis cutis and Calcinosis circumscriptaPublication . Pina, R.; Esteves, F.; Martins, M.; Santos, C.; Vala, HelenaCalcinosis is a rare condition described in pets. It is characterized mainly by calcium deposition in the skin of multifactorial aetiology that ranges from dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic to iatrogenic origin (Scott et al., 2001, Gross et al., 2005) . Subdivide in calcinosis cutis and calcinosis circumscripta (Gross et al. 2005). The objective of this paper is a case study about calcinosis, to alert medical and veterinary teams for this rare condition which seriously affects the health and well-being of the animal, in order to be considered in the differential diagnosis of skin conditions and diseases
- A case of AngiokeratomaPublication . Vala, Helena; Esteves, F.Angiokeratoma is described by various authors as a rare variant of the hemangioma in the dog, characterised by a vascular component like all types of vascular neoplasms, but also by an epithelial component. A case of angiokeratoma is described in a male eight-year-old dog. The tumor was located in heavily pigmented skin on the anterior surface of the front limb and not in the more usual previously described locations - eyelid and conjunctiva. Microscopic examination revealed a well-circumscribed mass with irregular hyperplasia of the epidermis and dilated vascular spaces filled with blood in the superficial dermis
- A case of AngiokeratomaPublication . Vala, Helena; Esteves, F.; Alves, A.A sample of skin from a male eight years old boxer was submitted to the pathology service. This sample included a small, ovoid, well-circunscribed mass that was elevated above the skin surface, had a blue color and 1 cm in diametre. This nodule was removed from the left anterior member of the dog. No others nodules have been reported until the moment. The samples were embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 3 m and stained with a hematoxylin and eosin (HE). For the immunohistochemical study a commercial monoclonal antibody directed against keratin, a commercial monoclonal antibody against vimentin, a commercial polyclonal antibody against type IV collagen and a commercial polyclonal antibody against factor VIII- related antigene were used. This sections were treated with a avidin biotin complex. The microscopic examination revealed an irregular hyperplasia of the epidermis. The superficial dermis was composed by dilated vascular spaces filled with erytrocites. Each vascular structure was enclosed and lined by a single layer of cells which resembled normal endothelial cells, aligned on a thin collagenous septa. Epithelial trabeculae extended downward to separate and partially surround some of the vascular structures. Immunohistochemically, as expected, the epitelial component revealed reactivity for keratin and the vascular proliferations revealed reactivity to vimentin, type IV collagen and the endothelial cells revealed reactivity to factor VIII- related antigene. The histologic characteristics were similar to those of the hemangiomas but the presence of this unusual marked hyperplasia of the overlying epidermis, which appeared to invade among the vascular spaces of the superficial dermis, showed that an angiokeratoma was present. To conclude, the mass observed had both components, vascular and epithelial, which permitted us to conclude that we were in the presence of the rare subtype of hemangioma - the angiokeratoma.
- A case of biliary cystadenoma in a geriatric cat.Publication . Vala, Helena; Nóbrega, C.; Ribeiro, A.; Mega, C.; Oliveira, A. L.; Santos, C.; Coelho, C.; Esteves, F.; Cruz, R.; Mesquita, J. R.A 9–year-old male European cat was referred for clinical examination with a history of anorexia, apathy and mild dehydration. Neurological exam revealed anisocoria and decreased pupillary reflex. Ultrasound examination of the abdomen suggested the presence of a mesenteric mass and several areas of renal and hepatic lesions. Renomegaly was also observed. Samples of organs were submitted to the pathology service of the Superior Agrarian School of Viseu. Macroscopic exam of the liver showed several prominent whitish areas that, on cut section, revealed multilocular cystic appearance with greenish colour in some of them. The mesenteric mass, of friable consistency, showed 5,5 x4,4x3,5 cm On cut section this mass revealed whitish areas of soft consistency that alternated with hemorrhagic areas. The kidneys showed an white, irregular surface, and also in one of them a corical prominent nodule was seen. Several sections were processed for routine histopathological diagnosis. Microscopic exam revealed that the mesenteric mass corresponded to a tumour of lymphoid cells. Cells were large, with scanty cytoplasm, euchromatic round nucleus with prominent central nucleoli, high mitotic count and moderate pleomorphism invading surrounding adipose tissue. The same type of cells was observed in the liver and kidneys. Based on these results, a lymphoma with renal and hepatic metastases was diagnosed in the mesenteric mass. Concomitantly, microscopic examination of the liver showed hepatocyte vacuolation and trabecular disorganization, with multiple cystic cavities lined by an epithelium of cubic or squamous type, showing fine fibrovascular tissue stroma. The cuboidal epithelial cells presented a moderate amount of pale eosinophilic cytoplasm, round or oval nucleus, vesicular, oriented centrally and with small or inapparent nucleoli. Based on these results, the diagnosis of neoplasia derived from biliary epithelium, was established. The differential diagnosis to be considered on this case were colangioma and biliary cystadenoma. The definitive diagnosis of biliary cystadenoma was established, based on the presence of multiple cystic cavities, disseminated by the hepatic parenchyma. According to previous statements, it was concluded that in spite of its rare occurrence, this is a case of biliary cystadenoma.
- A case of intense and multiple parasitic infestation in a wild pigeon (Columbia livia).Publication . Coelho, C.; Nóbrega, C.; Santos, C.; Cruz, R.; Mesquita, J.; Oliveira, A. L.; Mega, A. C.; Esteves, F.; Vala, HelenaIntroduction The prevalence of parasitic diseases in poultry seems to have significantly reduced due not only to the intensive production system but also to the improving conditions of hygiene and management practiced. However, parasitic diseases continue to have great importance in traditional production systems and production systems in the outdoors, contributing significantly to productivity decline of these farms. The pigeon (Columbia livia), a specie produced with outdoors access is more susceptible to infestations. The growing population of wild pigeons in urban areas can be decisive in the infestation of domestic pigeons, since they share the same places and their sanitary control is more difficult. Objectives The aim of this work is to describe a case of a pigeon (Columbia livia) with an intense parasitic infestation, this being the cause of death, with common parasitic species and other less frequent. Material and Methods A cadaver of a pigeon was submitted to the necropsy of Anatomic Pathology Laboratory of the Agrarian Superior School of Viseu, a detailed post mortem examination was carried out and samples were taken. All samples were fixed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin, for a maximum of 48 hours and processed following the routine histopathological technique. Results Gross examination lesions revealed rounded red lesions in the proventriculus serosa and lung congestion. Microscopic examination confirmed severe lung congestion, with hemosiderosis and the presence of numerous nematodes in cross section, discussing the hypothesis that it might be a case of Cyathostoma bronchialis (Muehlig 1884), taking into account the location or, less likely, an erratic parasite in histotropic migration phase. Eggs observed at this location had thick shell, oval shape, some were embryonated and 35-40 μm in length by 20-25 μm in width. In the lumen of the proventriculus glands, nematodes in cross section were also observed, noting numerous barrel-shaped eggs, embryonated larvae, oval poles and 55 mm in length by 25 mm in width, apparently compatible with parasites of the genus Tetrameres. Conclusion The high parasitic infestation of the wild pigeon specimen subjected to necropsy, with several, common and uncommon, species of parasites, the severity of lesions, leading to death of the animal, as well as the fact that infected wild birds favoring the spread of the parasite to the domestic pigeons and other poultry production, consisting of a major concern for producers, justifies the study of isolated cases, even constituting an epidemiological alert for the regions where they appear.
- A case of mammary gland Carcinoma and Malignant Myoepithelioma on a female dogPublication . Santos, M.; Esteves, F.; Almeida, R.; Vala, HelenaThe mammary gland is the most commonly affected organ for tumours in the bitch. Mammary tumours mainly affect middle-aged and elderly female dogs. In this case report, a 10 year-old female mix breed dog, spayed before first heat, showed to private veterinary practice with two mammary nodules on the right mammary chain. Complete unilateral mastectomy was performed and the formalin-fixed surgical specimen was submitted to pathology service. Routine hematoxylin and eosin histhopathological evaluation was performed. On the 1st abdominal gland, the microscopic exam revealed a well circumscribed, unencapsulated nodule, compatible with lipoma. The 2nd abdominal gland showed a neoplastic spindle cell population, loosely arranged in an abundant myxoid, bluish color matrix with cartilagineous type matrix areas. These cells presented round pale nuclei, increased contour, prominent nucleoli and nuclear pleomorphism. Multinucleated giant cells and high mitotic rate were also seen. Some sections showed epithelial proliferations arranged in a tubulopapillary pattern. Since the myoepithelial component with malignant characteristics predominated as a distinct feature, the diagnosis of carcinoma and malignant myoepithelioma was established, according to Goldschmidt (2007), since this diagnosis was not possible according to previous classifications. As the myoepithelial component is benign in almost all tumours, this is considered a rare lesion in the dog. Goldschmidt M. Classification of canine mammary tumours. 2007 Davis Foundation European Symposium. University of Munich, Germany. 27-29 Aug 2007.
- Um caso de carcinoma basoscamosoPublication . Vala, Helena; Esteves, F.A skin lesion from a 2,5 years male Perdigueiro, removed from the scapulo-humeral area of the left anterior limb, was submitted to the pathology service of the Escola Superior Agrária de Viseu. Macroscopicaly, the lesion corresponded to an ovoid and well-circunscribed mass, elevated above the skin surface, with 6,5x7,5x4cm. On cut section, a central cystic formation with fibrous capsule and several papillary growths that project into the lumen were observed. Four 3 m sections were processed for routine histopathological diagnosis. Microscopically, the central cyst was surrounded by areas of solid pattern, with numerous lobules subdivided by connective tissue stroma, and by intermingled areas of papillary growths. The cells in both the papillary proliferations and solid area were arranged in nests and cords. In terms of morphology, at the periphery of the nests or cords, cells were basaloid lyke, round or polyhedrical, with an ovoid and hyperchromatic nuclei, and little cytoplasm, occasionally showing melanin granules. In the centre of these structures, spinous differentiation was observed, with more pale and abundant cytoplasm, frequently keratinized, and large pale nuclei. These cells revealed only mild pleomorphism. Dysqueratotic cells were also commonly found. A distinct feature was the absence of a transition zone between the basal and squamous cell types, which is very characteristic of the basosquamous carcinoma, an uncommon canine tumor, with features of both basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. It is the authors’ believe that the final diagnosis in this case is in fact basosquamous carcinoma, even taking in consideration that this was a young dog and that this kind of tumor had never been described in an autochthon dog
