- Advancing internationalisation at the Polytechnic University of Viseu: Transforming challenges into opportunities with short-term mobilitiesPublication . Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), and other European University initiatives (EUIs) offer new international opportunities. The Polytechnic University of Viseu (IPV) in Inner Portugal is embracing this trend. This study explores the potential of short-mobility initiatives in advancing internationalisation, focusing on opportunities for students, staff, and the broader institutional landscape. It highlights the role of the EUNICE European University Alliance (EUA), of which IPV is a member, in fostering international engagement. Through a qualitative analysis, the study examines IPV’s strategic planning, showing how it aligns with internationalisation goals. Organisational culture plays a key role in shaping IPV’s global perspective, and the institution’s resourceful approach and clear strategic direction have contributed to a thriving internationalisation framework. This research also addresses the unique challenges HEIs in Inner Portugal face, offering insights that can inform policymakers and practitioners aiming to enhance internationalisation efforts in similar contexts. - Airbnb research: an analysis in tourism and hospitality journalsPublication . Andreu, Luisa; Bigne, Enrique; Amaro, Suzanne; Palomo, JesúsPurpose – The purpose of this study is to examine Airbnb research using bibliometric methods. Using research performance analysis, this study highlights and provides an updated overview of Airbnb research by revealing patterns in journals, papers and most influential authors and countries. Furthermore, it graphically illustrates how research themes have evolved by mapping a co-word analysis and points out potential trends for future research. Design/methodology/approach – The methodological design for this study involves three phases: the document source selection, the definition of the variables to be analyzed and the bibliometric analysis. A statistical multivariate analysis of all the documents’ characteristics was performed with R software. Furthermore, natural language processing techniques were used to analyze all the abstracts and keywords specified in the 129 selected documents. Findings – Results show the genesis and evolution of publications on Airbnb research, scatter of journals and journals’ characteristics, author and productivity characteristics, geographical distribution of the research and content analysis using keywords. Research limitations/implications – Despite Airbnb having a history of 10 years, research publications only started in 2015. Therefore, the bibliometric study includes papers from 2015 to 2019. One of the main limitations is that papers were selected in October of 2019, before the year was over. However, the latest academic publications (in press and earlycite) were included in the analysis. Originality/value – This study analyzed bibliometric set of laws (Price’s, Lotka’s and Bradford’s) to better understand the patterns of the most relevant scientific production regarding Airbnb in tourism and hospitality journals. Using natural language processing techniques, this study analyzes all the abstracts and keywords specified in the selected documents. - An Insight into the Level of Information about Sustainability of Edible Insects in a Traditionally Non-Insect-Eating Country: Exploratory StudyPublication . Guiné, Raquel P. F.; Florença, Sofia De Guiné E; Anjos, O.; Correia, Paula; Ferreira, Bruno; Costa, Cristina Amaro DaInsects have been reported as a possible alternative solution to help feed the growing world pop-ulation with less stress on the planet, thus contributing to the preservation of the environment and natural ecosystems. However, the consumption of edible insects (EIs), although culturally ac-cepted for some communities, is not readily accepted for others. Hence this work explores the lev-el of information that people in a traditionally non-insect-eating country have about the sustaina-bility issues related with EIs, and also some possible reasons that could motivate their consump-tion. The study was based on a questionnaire survey and the results were explored by descriptive statistic tools, tree classification analysis, factor analysis and cluster analysis. The results showed that the level of information is still low in general, with most people not manifesting an opinion. However, some aspects are relatively familiar to the participants (88.9% know that the ecological footprint of insects is smaller than other meats and 86.9% know that they efficiently convert or-ganic matter into protein). Factor and cluster analysis showed three classes: cluster 1—people not informed about the facts disclosed through the true statements and also not able to distinguish the false information; cluster 2—people not informed about the facts disclosed through the true statements but who were able to distinguish the false information; and cluster 3—people well in-formed about the facts disclosed through the true statements but who were marginally unable to distinguish the false information. It was also found that education, sex and professional area are the most relevant sociodemographic factors associated with the level of information, and the highest motivations to consume EIs are their contribution to preserve the environment and natu-ral resources followed by being a more sustainable option (for 64.7% and 53.4% of participants, respectively). Hence it was concluded that, although some work still needs to be done to better inform people about EIs, there is already some conscientiousness that they constitute a good and more sustainable alternative to other types of meat.
- Analysis of the factors that influence the success of relationship marketing in academic libraries.Publication . Figueiredo, Elisabeth; Pereira, Paulo; Ribeiro, Célia; Passos, Clotilde; Antunes, JoaquimPurpose: This study aims to identify the main dimensions of relationship marketing that have the greatest impact on users’ satisfaction and loyalty in academic libraries. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative study was conducted. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey, directed to the users of four libraries of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, which resulted a total of 292 valid responses. The necessary sample size for the completion of this study was calculated based on Daniel's calculator Soper. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 27.0) software and structural equation methods were use to test the proposed model. Originality: This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the specific dimensions of relationship marketing that are most influential in the context of university libraries. While prior research has explored relationship marketing in various contexts, this study focuses on the unique environment of academic libraries, thereby providing novel insights into enhancing user satisfaction and fostering loyalty among library users. Findings: The results show that the relationship marketing dimensions that contribute the most to users’ satisfaction and loyalty are: "relational behaviour", "understanding needs" and "quality of services". Additionally, the study identifies the positive relationship between user satisfaction and loyalty, emphasizing the critical role of relationship marketing in fostering long-term user loyalty in the academic library setting. Theoretical/methodological contributions: Increase of scientific knowledge through the validation of a relationship marketing model, through which its implications for the management of university libraries are evidenced. Practical implications: Understanding the main dimensions of relationship marketing that impact user satisfaction and loyalty allows library managers to adapt their strategies and services to motivate and attract users to their spaces and to better meet their needs.
- Antecedents, processes and outcomes of an internship program: an employer's perspectivePublication . Kroon, Nanja; Franco, MárioPurpose Higher education internships have been studied in different aspects, mainly from the student or university perspective. To contribute to the understanding of the third actor in this type of university-industry cooperation, the paper examines employers' perspectives on higher education internships. Design/methodology/approach Through a literature review and based on Narayanan et al. (2010) conceptual model, an a priori model was developed, which was then validated by a multiple-case study in a Portuguese undergraduate course. Findings The findings reveal rich and meaningful insights into an under-researched area, including validation of seven antecedents, two processes and six outcomes of internships from the employer's perspective. This research showed that employers give great importance to outcomes of internships, either in terms of productivity, possible future recruitment, inflow of ideas, behaviours and competences or the intern's satisfaction. Practical implications The findings suggest the need for universities to undertake more collaboration with industry, as the employers made weak references to the creation and maintenance of ties with the educational institution, denoting low motivation. On the other hand, most of the outcomes for employers found in the literature are confirmed, except for the continued inflow of ideas construct. This may evidence some lack of strategic thinking related to the internship programs on part of the employers. Originality/value This paper validates and extends the dispersed findings of existing research by providing a useful, unifying conceptual model of the employer's perspective on higher education internships, which can be tested at other levels of education or in other countries.
- Artificial Intelligence Research and Its Contributions to the European Union's Political Governance: Comparative Study between Member StatesPublication . Reis, João; Santo, Paula; Melão, NunoIn the last six decades, many advances have been made in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Bearing in mind that AI technologies are influencing societies and political systems differently, it can be useful to understand what are the common issues between similar states in the European Union and how these political systems can collaborate with each other, seeking synergies, finding opportunities and saving costs. Therefore, we carried out an exploratory research among similar states of the European Union, in terms of scientific research in areas of AI technologies, namely: Portugal, Greece, Austria, Belgium and Sweden. A key finding of this research is that intelligent decision support systems (IDSS) are essential for the political decision-making process, since politics normally deals with complex and multifaceted decisions, which involve trade-offs between different stakeholders. As public health is becoming increasingly relevant in the field of the European Union, the IDSSs can provide relevant contributions, as it may allow sharing critical information and assist in the political decision-making process, especially in response to crisis situations.
- Assessing a quality model for the social sector: an empirical study of the EQUASS modelPublication . Melão, Nuno; Bastida, R.; Marimon, F.Although the recent publication of a few scholarly papers has contributed to shorten the research-practice gap, there is still a shortage of empirical studies on quality management (QM) in the social sector. In particular, the study of the causal relationships incorporated in quality models that are specifically tailored to this sector remains to be examined. This research addresses this gap by (i) empirically analysing the fitness of the model underlying European Quality in Social Services (EQUASS), a QM and excellence programme for European social services, and (ii) proposing a model with an improved fit. It uses a structural equation modelling approach on a sample of 339 external audits from 32 European organisations that were awarded an EQUASS recognition or certification between 2012 and 2015. Results reveal that the EQUASS model (2012 version) does not fit with the sample collected. An improved model with seven constructs is proposed, which shows 2 excellent psychometric properties and good fit indexes. This research provides a better understanding of the causal relationships between QM practices embedded in the EQUASS model, along with a simpler alternative model that is especially suited to small and mediumsized providers, which represent the majority of the organisations in the social sector.
- Bank Credit and Trade Credit: The Case of Portuguese SMEs from 2010 to 2019Publication . Pinto, Pedro; Henriques, Carla; Cardoso, Carolina Esteves Oliveira da Silva; Neves, Maria Elisabete DuarteSmall companies face significant difficulties in accessing finance, and the use of bank credit and trade credit are the primary sources of financing, specifically in small countries, with little market liquidity, and focused on the banking system, as is the case of Portugal. The main objective of this article is to identify significant drivers of bank and trade credit, as well as investigate the complementary or substitutive relationship between them, considering that both constitute an essential source of financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The sample comprises 5860 companies, and the analysis was performed using panel data methodology (2010–2019). The results suggest that, during the period in which the financial crisis was most felt in the country (2010–2013), companies intensified their demand for trade credit, and in the following years for bank credit. Our evidence does support the substitution hypothesis between trade and bank credit.
- Bank Market Power, Firm Performance, Financing Costs and Capital StructurePublication . Gonçalves, Marisa Pessoa; Reis, Pedro; Pinto, PedroIn this study, we provide a thorough analysis, conducted on a company-by-company basis, of the impact of bank concentration and the bank-relative power of banks on firm profitability, financing costs, and capital structure in a small economy like Portugal. Using a sample of 434,990 Portuguese companies, the study spans a time frame of 13 years (from 2006 to 2018). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to determine bank concentration, and a new variable, “bank-related power”,was introduced. This work employed linear regression with static panel data for fixed and pooled effects, using Driscoll–Kraay standard errors and robust standard error estimation. A direct associ ation was found between business performance and the use of bank credit in highly concentrated banking markets (SMEs), and there is evidence of an inverse relationship when the relative power of banks increases (small business). Evidence also shows that financing costs increase with greater bank concentration, while firms’ capital structure improves under similar conditions. When a bank holds greater relative market power, it tends to exert a negative impact on the capital structure of large companies. However, an inverse relationship is observed in the case of SMEs. Unlike previous studies, the article assesses the effects of bank market power on each of the different companies involved by using both bank concentration (as a composite variable) and a new variable that measures the relative power of banks. Due to its extensive database and expanded time frame, this research is innovative in the context of small-sized companies.
- Business simulation in higher education: A case study from a network cooperation perspectivePublication . Figueiredo, Natália; Franco, MárioThe importance of cooperation between higher education institutions (HEIs) has increased and allows the development of competitive advantages, particularly through the transfer of knowledge and technology. Establishing well-conceived and well-managed cooperation networks can bring benefits and overcome obstacles. This article assesses the importance of cooperation between HEIs, characterizing the type of partner suitable for the establishment of cooperation and analysing the benefits and barriers that may arise. To achieve this objective, a qualitative approach based on a case study was adopted. Portuguese HEIs cooperating in the Business Simulation (BS) project were analysed. The results obtained reveal that cooperation between HEIs, more specifically in the BS project, is fundamental for the exchange of knowledge, the acquisition of new technology and platforms, and the acquisition of new work practices. However, it will be necessary to overcome barriers, principally of a more technological nature. This study uses a new and innovative structure, employing a model that expands knowledge on the topic by identifying three dimensions that influence cooperation between HEIs. The authors also present implications for theory and practice and propose an agenda for future research.
