- Ageism toward older adults among social education students: the impact of a photovoice programPublication . Araújo, Lia; Manuel Cid, Xosé; Sousa, LilianaThis study describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of a photovoice program for Social Education students from a Polytechnic University in Portugal. The program was named ‘Ageism in Perspective’ and developed over six sessions during one semester. The design was based on principles of the original photovoice methodology, along with previous experiences of photovoice as an active and experiential learning methodology in higher education. Implementation included theoretical- pedagogical and ethical activities about the methodology (photovoice) and the topic under exploration (ageism). It went practically-technologically through the process of taking and presenting photographs in the group/ classes, ending with a seminar and exhibition open to the community to share the main findings. Evaluation included a pre-posttest approach using the Negative Stereotypes Toward Aging Questionnaire (CENVE) and a final focus group addressing students’ overall experience with the program, the photovoice approach, and the impact on their perspectives about ageism. Participants (n = 45; mean age of 21.1, SD 4.1) were students of the second year in the degree course of Social Education. There was a statistically significant decrease in the CENVE score between the pre (30.1 ± 7.3) and the post (21.5 ± 4.0) test, meaning lower stereotypes after the program. Emerging themes from the focus group thematic analysis were (i) I am more willing to interact with older adults; (ii) Photovoice booster multiple perspectives and reflexivity; (iii) Becoming aware that ageism exists (even in myself). Findings suggest that photovoice is a good pedagogical tool to address students’ stereotypes about older adults, which should be as important as addressing the syllabus content.
- Aligning HE Pedagogical Innovation with VET, Industry, and Research Partnerships: Insights on the Demola Portugal InitiativePublication . Amante, Susana; Fernandes, RosinaAcademia–industry collaboration has been around for some time, but there has been a shift in both the education and workforce settings to work closely together, coordinating initiatives across all sectors, namely higher education (HE), vocational education and training (VET), and industry, in an attempt to mutually drive innovation, provide opportunities to go from concept to action, encourage entrepreneurship, improve ICT use, and other equally important hard and soft skills, aiming to bridge the existing gap between the teaching–learning arena and the business world. Aware that the VET sector, HE, the government, and industry should be devoted to forging partnerships considered key to the development of research, leading to quality, more business, and ultimately, the economic and social well-being of society, a Consortium of 14 Portuguese Polytechnic Institutions engaged in an innovative pedagogical training program, “Learning based on co-creation processes,” a project within the Demola Portugal Initiative (2021–2023), and at the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (IPV) with reference No. POCH-04-5267-FSE-000818. This training program, with its active methodologies, is then put into practice through the “Link Me Up—1000 Ideias” project. In our study, we will focus on the needs, expectations, and experiences of the IPV teaching staff and the vocational schoolteachers that participated in the training course. Through the analysis of questionnaires and e-portfolios of the participants in the first two editions (January–June 2021 and September 2021–February 2022), we intend to answer the following questions: (i) Which facilitation skills can be meaningfully used by the teachers participating in the (Demola) Pedagogical Innovation Training course at IPV? (ii) Which tools/platforms can enhance the students’ learning and collaboration among different team members, company representatives, and trainees/facilitators? The data collected confirm that the Demola Portugal Initiative provides an effect
- An online school-based prevention programme targeting substance use, depression, and anxiety in adolescence: improving impact and accessibilityPublication . Magalhães, Cátia; Carraça, BrunoSubstance use, depression, and anxiety often share common risk factors which may interact. If we wish to address the major public health issues that substance use and mental ill health pose on society, specifically in adolescence, continued research into novel and scalable prevention strategies that target these problems together is crucial. In The Lancet Digital Health, Maree Teesson and colleagues report a multicentre, cluster-randomised controlled trial in secondary schools to assess the effectiveness of the first combined, online, universal, school-based preventive intervention targeting substance use, depression, and anxiety in adolescence.
- Anxiety, Depression and Quality of Life in Older Adults: Trajectories of Influence across AgePublication . Ribeiro, Oscar; Teixeira, Laetitia; Araújo, Lia; Rodríguez-Blázquez, Carmen; Calderón-Larrañaga, Amaia; Forjaz, Maria JoãoThis study focuses on the influence of anxiety and depression on individual trajectories of quality of life in old age through a longitudinal approach. A representative sample of adults aged 50+ living in Portugal and participating in wave 4 (W4) and wave 6 (W6) of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) project was considered. Participants, 1765 at baseline (W4) and 1201 at follow up (W6), were asked about their quality of life (CASP-12) and emotional status (Euro-D scale; five items from the Beck Anxiety Inventory). Linear Mixed Effects models were performed to identify factors associated with changes in quality of life across age. Increasing age was found to have a significant negative effect on quality of life. Lower education and higher levels of depression and anxiety at baseline were also associated with worse quality of life; 42.1% of the variation of CASP-12 across age was explained by fixed and random effects, being depression followed by anxiety as the factors that presented with the highest relative importance. Both depression and anxiety play an important role in quality of life in older adults and must be acknowledged as important intervention domains to foster healthy and active aging.
- Are Consumers Aware of Sustainability Aspects Related to Edible Insects? Results from a Study Involving 14 CountriesPublication . Guiné, Raquel P. F.; Florença, Sofia De Guiné E; Anjos, Ofélia; Boustani, Nada M.; Chuck-Hernández, Cristina; Sarić, Marijana Matek; Ferreira, Manuela; Costa, Cristina Amaro Da; Bartkiene, Elena; Cardoso, Ana Paula; Tarcea, Monica; Correia, Paula; Campos, Sofia; Papageorgiou, Maria; Camino, Daniel Abarquero; Korzeniowska, Malgorzata; Černelič-Bizjak, Maša; Kruma, Zanda; Damarli, Emel; Ferreira, Vanessa; Djekic, IlijaIn recent years, edible insects have been suggested as an alternative food that is more sustainable compared with other sources of animal protein. However, knowledge about the sustainability aspects associated with this source of food may play a role in convincing consumers to adopt insects as part of their diet. In this context, the present study investigated the level of knowledge about the sustainability of edible insects in a group of people originating from 14 countries, with some naturally entomophagous and others not. To measure the knowledge, 11 items were selected and the scores obtained were tested with statistical tools (t-test for independent samples, analysis of variance—ANOVA) to search for differences according to sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics, geographical origin, and consumption habits of edible insects. The obtained results showed that, in general, knowledge is moderate, with the values of the average scores for the 11 items investigated ranging from 0.23 ± 0.99 to 0.66 ± 1.02, on a scale ranging from –2 (=very low knowledge) to 2 (=very high knowledge). The highest scores were found for items relating to the lower use of animal feed and lower emission of greenhouse gases required for the production of insects compared with beef. When investigating the differences between groups of participants, significant differences were generally found, revealing a trend for higher knowledge among males and young adults, for participants residing in urban areas and in countries such as Spain, Mexico, and Poland, and for participants with higher education levels and higher incomes. When testing the influence of consumption variables on the level of knowledge, the results showed a higher knowledge for participants who had already consumed insects or are willing to consume them. Finally, it was observed that higher knowledge was found for participants whose motivation to consume insects related to curiosity, a wish to preserve the planet, the gastronomic characteristics of insects, and their nutritional value. In conclusion, these results clearly indicate a very marked influence of a number of variables on the knowledge about the sustainability of edible insects, and this may be helpful to delineate strategies to effectively raise knowledge and eventually increase the willingness to consider insects as a more sustainable alternative to partially replace other protein foods, even in countries where this is a not a traditional practice.
- Assessment and creativity stimulus in school contextPublication . Cardoso, Ana Paula; Malheiro, Rogério; Rodrigues, Paula; Felizardo, Sara; Lopes, AnaCreativity is a fundamental aptitude today, with teachers playing an important role in its promotion. So, this study intends to examine to what extent teachers of Visual and Technological Education (EVT) evaluate, objectively, the creative level of their students and which strategies they put into practice, in order to stimulate student creativity. A comparative research of a descriptive-correlational nature was undertaken, comprising a questionnaire to twenty nine 2nd Cycle of Basic Education teachers from the Viseu municipality state schools (Portugal) and the application of the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking to 46 students from two classes at one of the schools. The data reveal that there are no statistically significant differences between the assessment of student creativity obtained by the Torrance Test and the creative level assigned by teachers. We can also verify, with relation to stimulating creativity, that teachers of Visual and Technological Education opt, more frequently, for psychological stimuli and, less frequently, for educational strategies that involve carrying out assignments/research. Educational implications are addressed.

- Characterization of the Physical Activity Level (PAL) in Portuguese ElderlyPublication . Mendes, Francisco; Martins, Emília; Fernandes, Rosina; Amante, Maria João; Rosado, António; Molina, JesúsThe positive impact of physical activity on the elderly is so relevant that WHO (2016) encourages it and sets out global recommendations for its practice. This paper describes a non-experimental study with 202 participants, with a mean age of 81.76 ± 7.47 years, of which 70.3% are female. 20.7% live with a spouse and 5.2% with their sons/daughters. The vast majority of participants (92.1%) has different levels of support from their care givers. Subjective measures were collected through the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire (HPAQ) (2009), and analyzed using the SPSS-24 with the confidence level of 95%. The results show that only 1.5% of the participants engaged in Sports Score (SS) while 44% participated in Leisure Time Score (LTS) activities with mean values of 1,045±1.05. The Domestic Activities Score (DAS) involves the largest number of subjects (83.7%) with a mean of .817± 69, and the HPAQ average is 1.3±1.31. Inferential analysis shows that advanced age, non-cohabitation with spouse and institutional support are relevant in the type of Physical Activities engaged in by the elderly. Gender and Body Mass Index (BMI) were not significant. It is, therefore, important to sensitize the providers of elderly care to develop strategies likely to promote, monitor, and follow up such Physical Activities.
