- All My Independent Women: An Art Network on Gender IssuesPublication . Sousa, Catarina Carneiro de; Cruz, CarlaAll My Independent Women (AMIW) is an ongoing artistic project based on the debate around gender issues. Its primary aim is to bring to light feminist practices, underrepresented in the Portuguese context. This project was initiated in Portugal but expanded beyond national borders, and now takes place irregularly in various parts of the world. In this article, we will focus on the importance of this international network that grows each year and the way the Internet enhances this process. The several editions have taken the form of art exhibitions that materialize the collective reading of Portuguese feminist books — first “Dicionário da Crítica Feminista / Dictionary of Feminist Criticism” and later, “Novas Cartas Portuguesas / New Portuguese Letters”, both milestones of Portuguese feminist thought. However, the project went beyond the conventional exhibition format by expanding itself in cyberspace, through the use of social media and online virtual environments: the metaverse.
Azevedo, António Manuel Tavares; Mendes Ribeiro Eira, Paulo Alexandre; Lourenço, Carla; Almeida, MarisaIntroduction: Gymnastics contributes to the education and development of children, as well as in the various proposals associated with Physical Education (PE) in Elementary School. These activities allow self-confidence and enthusiasm, reflected on children´s performance, persistence, well-being, self-esteem and their ability to concentrate. Objectives: To assess the importance of technical activities for the motor development and education of children and whether schools promote and create spaces for the development of these activities. Methods: The study group comprises 2 distinct sets, totaling 36 children. The BOT2 motor proficiency test was used and, later, descriptive and inferential analysis of the data was used using the 28th version 28 of Statistical Software SPSS. Results: Significant differences were evidenced between groups regarding the degree of fine motor precision, fine motor integration and manual dexterity. Conclusion: Gymnastics contributes to children´s cross-sectional development, associated with numerous biopsychosocial benefits. Its activities developed in school, through PE, allow the recreation of gestures and other elements in various contexts, especially in the self-directed activities of school playgrounds. PE plays a crucial role in children´s social integration and, Gymnastics in particular, makes them a more active and conscious citizen, also providing body autonomy and increased capacity for expression in groups.
Ferreira, Sónia; Santos, Sara; Do Espírito Santo, Pedro ManuelNowadays, the importance of social media in the various sectors of our society is unquestionable. Furthermore, the investment that the cinematographic industry has been making in the use of new digital platforms that promote communication with the public is also undeniable. The trend is the cinema converge with the Internet, so it is imperative that the cinematographic industry creates an online content production system continuously and updated before, during and after the film’s debut in theatres. This empirical study aims to highlight the effects of the awarding of the best film and best actor in the 76th Golden Globe Award for the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. In this way, it was analysed the engagement of web users with the Facebook page before and after the attribution of the prizes to the film object of this analysis. The results show that as we move further from the release date of the movie, there will be a trend towards more “likes”, but less “shares” and “comments” by users that follows the movie page. Nevertheless, this trend changed in order to the Bohemian Rhapsody victory in the Golden Globes. Therefore, it is concluded that the awarding of premiums to the films modifies the engagement of the users in that pages of social media.
- Citizenship Education and teacher training: Implications for teaching practicePublication . Cardoso, Ana Paula; Costa, Ana Sofia; Rocha, João; Ferreira, Manuela; Campos, SofiaCitizenship Education is one of the main challenges faced in educating children and young people in societies undergoing a rapid process of globalization in this decade, and it requires that teachers marshal particular knowledge and skills. Although this is a subject area that is part of the curriculum, it is often undervalued in teaching practice in the 1st cycle of basic education (CEB) [years 1 - 4]. It is, therefore, important to know the degree to which teachers are prepared to address citizenship issues, the relevance they attach to initial and ongoing training in this area, as well as the topics and/or content they would like to see addressed in their ongoing training, with a view to developing competencies related to citizenship in schools. To achieve these objectives, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire survey as an instrument for data collection. The study covered a non-probabilistic sample of 91 mostly female 1st CEB teachers in the municipality of Viseu (Portugal), aged between 35 and 64 years. Regarding the results obtained, the overwhelming majority of teachers never attended training courses related to citizenship education, recognizing that there are aspects of their work that could be improved through attending such course, addressing issues related to teachers’ didactic knowledge and conflict management in the classroom. The suggestions made by the teachers to promote meaningful learning in this area are an important contribution of this research, highlighting the focus on training (teachers and parents/guardians) and in fostering initiatives that promote the involvement of the educational community and other stakeholders in a cooperative and/or collaborative framework. This study aims to raise the scientific community’s awareness of the importance of ongoing training in improvements and innovations in teaching in terms of citizenship education. In particular, the data presented enable policy makers, management bodies and teachers to reflect on the importance and implications that ongoing training has or may have on teaching practice for schools to be able to respond to the changing demands of today’s society.
Guerreiro, António; Tomás Ferreira, Rosa; Menezes, Luís; Martinho, Maria HelenaThis paper aims at answering to the challenge of thinking about the communication that occurs in the mathematics classroom. We disagree with the simplistic view of communication as a tool for knowledge transfer (from teacher to students); instead, we assume communication as a process of interaction, in which mathematical knowledge is socially constructed. Such a vision of communication in the mathematics classroom resonates with the processes of production and communication of mathematical knowledge that take place in the scientific field and the human community’s daily acting (when using mathematical ideas). Thus, changes are needed in mathematics teaching, particularly regarding the teacher’s and the students’ roles. Inquiry-based mathematics teaching is appointed as a privileged way to, supported by a set of fundamental communicative actions, create productive learning environments, which involve students’ work in challenging mathematical tasks, solving them and discussing the approaches taken, and culminate in the institutionalization of mathematical knowledge.
Menezes, LuísThe study aims to find out the conceptions of future teachers (FT), at the beginning of their training, about humour and its value for teaching mathematics. FT was investigated through the use of a questionnaire and an interview. The results show that FT has a conception of what humour is and its social relevance, they believe they have a sense of humour and appreciate it in others. They consider that mathematics is compatible with the use of humour, citing reasons of cognitive, emotional and communicative nature, but most of them say that they did not have mathematics teachers who used it.
- Conscientiousness and intrinsic motivation as predictors of learning perception and academic achievementPublication . Cardoso, Ana Paula; Ferreira, Manuela; Abrantes, José Luís; Seabra, CláudiaThis paper aims to relate conscientiousness, intrinsic motivation and perceived learning, and its direct and indirect relationships with academic achievement. An empirical study was undertaken, involving a representative sample of 1986 Portuguese high school students. A structural model reveals that conscientiousness directly and positively influences intrinsic motivation, perceived learning and academic achievement. In turn, intrinsic motivation directly and positively influences perceived learning and academic achievement. Corroborating previous studies, these findings suggest that personal factors are essential to improve student´s learning outcomes, namely academic achievement. Recommendations for teachers and school managers are addressed.
