  • Segmenting Travelers Based on the Use of Travel Social Media
Publication . Amaro, Suzanne; Duarte, Paulo; Henriques, Carla
The popularity of social media among travelers has been highly recognized by research addressing this issue. Research has mainly focused on the role and impact of social media on travelers’ travel planning process and there is consensus that travel decisions are highly influenced by social media websites. Yet, little attention has been paid to the differences among travelers regarding their use of social media for travel purposes. Based on the use of travel social media websites, cluster analysis was employed to identify different segments among travelers. Furthermore, the study profiles the clusters based on demographic and other travel related characteristics. The findings of this study are important to online marketers to better understand traveler’s use of social media and their characteristics, in order to adapt online marketing strategies according to the profile of each segment. Given the popularity of social media among travelers, it is imperative that researchers and practitioners continue to deeper the understanding of social media users. The study provides practical and theoretical contributions. Future research is also suggested in order to further develop the contributions and take in account the limitations of this study.
  • Statistics in medicine: case studies
    Publication . Matos, A.; Henriques, C.
ABSTRACT. Successful research involves the creation of interdisciplinary teams. The collaboration of statisticians and physicians is an example. In this talk we will show two case studies. The first shows how it was possible to contribute to concede the non accuracy of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis in the presence of acute pancreatitis and thus contribute to a better clinical diagnosis that will determine the therapy to adopt. The study enrolled 120 patients with acute pancreatitis. The patients were divided into two groups: the first group of patients for whom the result of the ultrasonography was negative for acute cholecystitis (77 patients); the second group included the patients with positive result in the ultrasonography (43 patients). Statistical analyzes were conducted illustrating the inaccuracy of ultrasonography alone in the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis [1]. The second case involves an observational study of protein expression, human hepcidin, in liver tissue of patients with alcoholic liver disease (DHA) and of healthy individuals. It involved 61 patients with DHA and 20 healthy controls. This work contributes to a better clarification of the mechanism that stimulates increased iron levels in patients with DHA. This talk is based in joint work with Carla Henriques of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, Jorge Pereira, Catarina Afonso and Luis Matos Costa of the Tondela-Viseu Hospital Center.
  • Developing marketing capabilities through export commitment and innovativeness
Publication . Malva, Madalena; Vicente, Margarida; Antunes, Maria José
This research examines how marketing capabilities, technological capabilities, and organizational innovation influence export performance. More specifically, we examine the impact of marketing and technological capabilities on organizational innovation and the influence of organizational innovation on export performance. We investigate the mediating role of organizational innovation in the relationships between these two capabilities (i.e. marketing and technological capabilities) and export performance. Survey data of 471 exporting manufacturing firms based in Portugal was used to test the relationships between the constructs analyzed in this study. The findings demonstrate that marketing and technological capabilities have a significant effect on organizational innovation intensity, which in turn has a positive impact on export performance. Organizational innovation positively mediates the relationships between marketing and technological capabilities and export performance. Furthermore, the results show that marketing capabilities have a stronger impact on organizational innovation and export performance than technological capabilities. Implications for scholars and practitioners are discussed along with suggestions for future research.
  • Satisfaction and Service Quality and Life in the institutions for seniors
Publication . Malva, Madalena; Antunes, Joaquim; Pereira, Vânia
The socio-demographic changes justified the increase number of studies related to population aging; the increase in the elderly population has led to many social changes, which seek through new and improved services to meet the needs of this population. This study sought to understand user satisfaction in elderly homes adding two constructs: the quality of Parasuraman services, Zeithaml and Berry (1988) and the quality of life of Kane (2003) These play an important role in the management of organizations having a significant weight in the strategic and operational decisions that influence the quality of services provided (Hespanhol, 2008; Escoval & Ferreira, 2010). For the first time, these constructs were analyzed together in order to see whether the part of the services or the part of the quality of life contribute more to the satisfaction of residents in institutions for seniors. The study was carried out to 209 users institutionalized in elderly homes, protected by the Social Security or private nature in Viseu county. The results allow us to verify a set of relationships between variables related to quality of service and the quality of life in user satisfaction.

  • Statistical Modelling in Health: Some Case Studies
Publication . Henriques, Carla; Matos, Ana Cristina; Santos, Luis Ferreira; Faria, Bernardo
This presentation focus on two examples of applications of Statistics in the field of Medicine. Research questions are posed by health professionals. The answers are not always straightforward, and the difficulties show up with different forms. In the first case study, the objective was to find a panel of biomarkers that would be useful to predict the course of a kidney disease – Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN). The study could confirm the predictive role of some of the established risk factors for disease progression and also suggests a combination of two histological biomarkers (C4d and CD3) to predict IgAN progression. In the second example we move to the area of cardiology, looking for a model that could be a valuable adjuvant in the diagnosis of Brugada Syndrome. A set of five electrocardiographic markers were identified and their linear combination was explored in order to find one that could be a reliable tool in Brugada Syndrome diagnosis. This talk is based in joint work with Ana Cristina Matos, of the Polytechnic Instituto of Viseu, Luís Ferreira dos Santos of the Tondela-Viseu Hospital Center, and Bernardo Faria of the Nephrology and Infectious Disease R&D Group, INEB, I3S, University of Porto, Porto.
  • O Teste do Sinal para Amostras Associadas
Publication . Henriques, Carla; OLiveira, Paulo
    Publication . Matos, A.; Henriques, C.; Pereira, J.; Afonso, A.; Constantino, J.
