Publication . Duarte, Filipe A.P.; Madeira, Maria José; Fonseca, SMSR; Moura, Dulcineia Catarina; Guia, Ana
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of R&D investment as a determinant of ongoing or abandoned innovation activities. The literature review focuses especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that deploy R&D investment as a way of developing innovation processes. Design/methodology/approach – This study’s design used a sample of 4,229 Portuguese SMEs to analyse the effects R&D investment has on the innovation activities; the results obtained demonstrate the great importance of firms investing in R&D internal activities for the development of their innovation process. Findings – The most important findings highlight the types of activities that emerge as relevant to innovation processes susceptible for development to avoid abandoning and maintaining ongoing innovation activities. Among them, the authors would highlight the design of products or services, the introduction of innovations to the market and the acquisition of machinery, equipment and specific software, among others. Originality/value – In addition, other types of activities emerge as relevant to innovation processes susceptible for development to avoid abandoning and maintaining ongoing innovation activities. This research adds value to the current literature mainly showing several determinants related to R&D, which could be used by SMEs to improve and develop their activities of innovation.
  • Seasonality mitigation strategies - The case of the Douro Museum
Publication . Fernandes, Didiana; Vieira, Isabel; Cardoso, Fernando; Guia, Ana; Rodrigues, Ana Paula
Seasonality covers various sectors of economic activity, from primary to tertiary, being tourism, specifically in this study, culture and museums, very affected by this phenomenon. In a way, this constraint is predictable in this sector, and this predictability may allow the anticipation of supply strategies that can counteract this manifestation and stimulate the stability of demand throughout the year. Examples include market variation, pricing policy and the experience provided, whereby promotion should reflect distinct activity and event packages. This research was conducted as a starting point to help combat the seasonality evident in the Douro Museum located in the Alto Douro Region. An exploratory case study combining qualitative research methods was conducted to deepen the understanding of this complex phenomenon. We hope that this research reveals the importance of the enlargement of innovative and transversal cultural tourism products, in the planning and development of tourism in Alto Douro and, in particular, in the Douro Museum, facing the so called low season in tourism.
  • Motivations of Youth Tourism: The Case of University Students in the Porto and North Region
Publication . Soeiro De Carvalho, Ana Branca; Guia, Ana; Duarte, Filipe A P; Flores, Ventura Enrique Mota; Fonseca, Susana Maria Salgueiro Rebelo da
Tourism nowadays allows for the development and enhancement of many places and countries, leading to improvements in economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects. It is considered to provide unique experiences to both tourists and the local population through the interaction of different cultures. With various tourism products available, it is essential to identify the motivations and attributes that tourists, especially young tourists, seek and possess regarding a destination. Therefore, we aim to identify and understand the profile and motivations of young tourists/visitors, particularly university students. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) classifies motivations for tourism into two main categories: the first is called Rational Type, which includes concepts such as trust, security, savings, tradition, and modernism. The other is called Affective Type, encompassing curiosity, novelty, sympathy, freedom, and friendship. Currently, young people travel to visit friends and family, for studying or exploring new places, and for the cultural heritage of the destinations. Regardless of the various reasons presented, cultural motivations (such as visiting historical monuments) and motivations to explore new places stand out in most of their visits. The present study aims to identify the profile of youth tourism in Portugal, specifically focusing on young individuals attending higher education, who engage in cultural tourism based on their motivations, behaviours, activities, travel data, and accommodation choices. To achieve this objective, a non-probabilistic convenience sample was used, and a questionnaire survey was developed, resulting in 94 completed questionnaires within the time frame defined between October 1 and December 31, 2022.

Publication . Fonseca, Susana; Vaz, Carla; Duarte, Filipe A P; Carvalho, Ana; Guia, Ana
