- Education Crisis—Digital Solutions After Covid-19Publication . Soeiro De Carvalho, Ana Branca; Menezes, Nídia; Fonseca, Susana; Mota, MiguelPandemic effects can generate demotivation and dissatisfaction, or even discomfort, since it is an activity and structure built based on relationships, largely in face-to-face relationships, which make the pedagogical act a moment of interaction and sharing. We are particularly interested in the digital transformation pushed forward by the COVID-19 pandemic concerning higher education students. During a state of emergency, teleworking is mandatory as the work function and classes are compatible with eLearning and homework. Digital Technology looks closely at one significant facet of our rapidly evolving digital lives: how technology radically changes our lives as teachers and students. The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has paralyzed life around the world, reporting restrictive measures (that include avoidance of social interactions and the prohibition of circulation between national and international territories) that were considered non-essential activities like factories, services, and including all the educational institutions. Even Erasmus and International programs were canceled. This research project focuses on the needs and strategies, including the scaling up of investments in Information and communication technologies (ICT) education and training, and efficient management of the well-being of students and teachers. The study was carried out in a higher education institution located in the northern region of Portugal, with approximately 800 students. The methodology used was a documentary, through indicators of student satisfaction and success. Comparisons were made, for both students and teachers, with the homologous situation for the year 2018/2019, 2019/2020, 2020/2021, previous Covid-19, and after this pandemic situation.
- The Fishermans Route - Project of sustainability and pedagogical practices.Publication . Soeiro De Carvalho, Ana Branca; Carvalho, Milena; Martins, Susana; Santos, EleonoraThe Fisherman's Route is a collaborative project implemented through training and pedagogical innovation and the integration of final year students from LCTDI (ISCAP-P.Porto) in the curricular unit of Internship for the application of the skills of the Information Professional (IP) for the 21st century. Informational heritage makes it possible to create and enrich tourist activities based on local culture, promoting sustainable and local economic development, as well as safeguarding heritage, through the transfer of knowledge from the IP skills acquired at LCTDI. Through semi-structured interviews with members of the fishing communities of Caxinas and Poça da Barca and the analysis of documents, a survey of the informational heritage linked to fishing practices was carried out. The results of the project are presented, which is assumed as a model for local development, valuing traditions and preserving the informational heritage linked to the fishing activity. The importance of the competences that the IP holds in different work realities is inferred.
- The Role of Social Media Advertisement and Physical Activity on Eating Behaviors among the General Population in Saudi ArabiaPublication . Alshahrani, Najim Z.; Branca Carvalho, Ana; J. Reis Lima, M.; Teixeira-Lemos, Edite; Raposo, AntónioAbstract: Over the past few decades, people in Saudi Arabia have become less inclined to adopt active lifestyles and healthy eating habits due to the increasing use of digital technologies such as social media. The objective of this online-based cross-sectional study was to assess the role of social media food advertisements and physical activity on eating behaviors among the general population in Saudi Arabia (n = 471). Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, which consisted of four parts: (i) sociodemographic information, (ii) attitude towards social media, (iii) eating behaviorsrelated information, and (iv) exposure to and engagement with social media advertisements. The study’s outcome variable, eating behaviors (healthy vs. unhealthy), was assessed using the following question: “Are you on a healthy diet (such as a balanced diet, keto, or low carb)?” A multiple binary logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors that influence unhealthy eating behaviors. Approximately 79.6% of the participants had unhealthy eating behaviors. Participants who were not involved in daily physical activity were more likely to have unhealthy eating behaviors compared to their counterparts (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 4.86). Participants who watched food ads on social media channels 1–3 times a week (AOR = 2.58) or daily (AOR = 3.49) were more likely to have unhealthy eating behaviors than their counterparts. Participants whose appetite to try foods increases always (AOR = 1.42) or usually (AOR = 2.88) after viewing ads on social media were more likely to have unhealthy eating behaviors. These findings suggest that policymakers should take immediate action to regulate food advertising policy to promote a healthy food environment across the country. Saudis should be encouraged to engage in more physical activity, which could support the maintenance of healthy eating patterns and lifestyles.

- Motivations of Youth Tourism: The Case of University Students in the Porto and North RegionPublication . Soeiro De Carvalho, Ana Branca; Guia, Ana; Duarte, Filipe A P; Flores, Ventura Enrique Mota; Fonseca, Susana Maria Salgueiro Rebelo daTourism nowadays allows for the development and enhancement of many places and countries, leading to improvements in economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects. It is considered to provide unique experiences to both tourists and the local population through the interaction of different cultures. With various tourism products available, it is essential to identify the motivations and attributes that tourists, especially young tourists, seek and possess regarding a destination. Therefore, we aim to identify and understand the profile and motivations of young tourists/visitors, particularly university students. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) classifies motivations for tourism into two main categories: the first is called Rational Type, which includes concepts such as trust, security, savings, tradition, and modernism. The other is called Affective Type, encompassing curiosity, novelty, sympathy, freedom, and friendship. Currently, young people travel to visit friends and family, for studying or exploring new places, and for the cultural heritage of the destinations. Regardless of the various reasons presented, cultural motivations (such as visiting historical monuments) and motivations to explore new places stand out in most of their visits. The present study aims to identify the profile of youth tourism in Portugal, specifically focusing on young individuals attending higher education, who engage in cultural tourism based on their motivations, behaviours, activities, travel data, and accommodation choices. To achieve this objective, a non-probabilistic convenience sample was used, and a questionnaire survey was developed, resulting in 94 completed questionnaires within the time frame defined between October 1 and December 31, 2022.
- Waste elimination processes, from lean to kaizen in third sector organizationsPublication . Soeiro De Carvalho, Ana Branca; Pinto, António; Cesário, Carolina; Santos, Daniela; Saraiva, MarianaIn a globalized world, the challenges are many for companies and organizations. To face these challenges, organizations need to increase their productivity in order to become more competitive. This need leads organizations to look for new management methodologies and techniques. All available methodologies and techniques are an aid in business management. The Lean philosophy focuses on process efficiency and its main objective is to offer maximum value using the least amount of resources possible. Therefore, it is necessary to completely eliminate all waste (activities that do not add any value) and focus on completing only the necessary work within a certain period, so you can establish a progress of the company's processes. This article analyze the concepts and principles of these methodologies and make a comparative study between them, identifying the aspects that distinguish them and the similarities found, as well as verifying their application in a third sector institution. Third sector organizations are gaining more and more social weight, they increasingly need to achieve the much desired organizational sustainability and, for this purpose, they turn to management to perform a sustainable, effective, efficient, quality and transparent work. According to the previously developed concept of Lean Six Sigma, it was found that it is important for Third Sector Organizations, in particular, with regard to the sustainability of Organizations, as it is impactful in its various dimensions (financial, environmental and social) (Freitas; Costa and Ferraz, 2016). For this purpose, they created three pillars of organizational sustainability (financial, social and environmental pillar) and measured the influence of the implementation of Lean Six Sigma on these, having verified that the impacts are of greater magnitude in the financial and social pillar followed by the environmental pillar. The use and application of Lean and Six Sigma concepts in third sector organizations will allow for a better understanding and comparison of initial situations with the final results, in a context of improvements based on the elimination of waste and reduction of errors.
