  • Motivation and involvement in international tourism
Publication . Seabra, Cláudia; Vicente, Margarida; Silva, Carla; Abrantes, José Luís
Using a sample of international tourists travelling in Portugal, Spain and Italy, this study identifies key issues related with tourist involvement. One of the main aspects in the consumer behavior and the decision processes’ understanding is the concept of involvement (Broderick & Mueller, 1999; Dimanche et al., 1993) because it influences the decision rules used by tourists to reach the final decision (Sirakaya & Woodside, 2005). An empirical study of 600 international tourists reveals that motivation to relax influences tourists’ involvement with the trip. A structural model reveals that when tourists are motivated to relax they get directly more involved with their trip (pleasure and information seeking). The motivation to relax also influences indirectly the tourist involvement with the evaluation and quality perception of the trip through its influence on involvement with the trip planning. Discussion centers on the implications of this model to theory and managerial development of tourism and services strategies. Directions for future research are also presented.
  • Smartphones: o sistema nervoso da comunicação líquida
Publication . Silva, Paulo; Seabra, Cláudia; Cunha, I. F.
  • WOM antecedents in backpacker travelers
Publication . Alves, Sandra; Abrantes, José Luís; Antunes, Maria José; Seabra, Cláudia; Herstein, Ram
This study examines the antecedents of Word-of-Mouth (WOM) message content (MC) of backpackers' travelers. How travel motivation, the sense of belonging, social interaction places and cultural activities influence WOM-MC in the case of backpacker travelers. The study tests a model empirically using a survey of 656 backpackers from 75 different countries.
  • Pedagogical affect, student interest, and learning performance
Publication . Abrantes, José Luís; Seabra, Cláudia; Lages, Luis Filipe
Using a sample of more than 1000 students, this study reveals that students’ perceived learning depends directly on their interest, pedagogical affect, and their learning performance and indirectly on the student–instructor interaction, the instructor's responsiveness, course organization, the instructor's likeability/concern, and the student's learning performance. Likeability/concern indirectly affects student interest by influencing learning performance. The results yield recommendations for schools, department heads, and university administrators.
  • Dynamic and operational capabilities for innovation: their influence on export market effectiveness
Publication . Vicente, Margarida; Seabra, Cláudia; Abrantes, José Luís; Teixeira, Mário Sérgio
This paper analyzes the influence of technological turbulence, organizational management dynamic capability and operational capabilities for innovation on export market effectiveness. Based on the dynamic capability view, we investigate the effect of technological turbulence on organizational management dynamic capability, and how this latter contributes to leverage operational capabilities for innovation in order to benefit performance in export markets. To test the hypotheses, we carry out a structural equation model, using a sample of 471 exporting manufacturers firms that operate from Portugal. The results demonstrate that technological turbulence is an antecedent factor of organizational management dynamic capability, which in turn has a significant impact on the development of firms’ operational capabilities for innovation, specifically innovativeness, innovation strategy, and technological capability. However, the findings only establish that innovation strategy and technological capability have a significant direct effect on export market effectiveness. Implications for scholars and practitioners are discussed along with suggestions for future research.
  • The influence of terrorism in tourism arrivals: A longitudinal approach in a Mediterranean country
Publication . Seabra, Cláudia; Reis, Pedro; Abrantes, José Luís
This longitudinal study examines the impact that terrorist attacks within a representative group of European countries can have on the tourism demand of a South European country with no record of terrorism attacks. In order to analyze the connections between terrorist attacks and tourists' arrivals, occurred between 2002 and the end of 2016, an Unrestricted Vector Autoregressive model was used for multivariate time series analysis. The main results show that terrorist attacks have a strong impact on tourist arrivals and confirm the existence of terrorism spillover, namely the substitution and generalization effects phenomena.

  • The Influence of Terrorism Risk Perception on Involvement and Safety Importance to International Tourists
Publication . Seabra, Cláudia; Abrantes, José Luís; Kastenholz, Elisabeth
Using a sample of 600 international tourists travelling in Portugal, Spain and Italy, this study identifies key issues related with terrorism, risk perception, involvement and safety concerns of international tourists. A structural equation model reveals that tourists are motivated to acquire information about terrorism in the media, revealing attention to and interest in news regarding this topic, which in turn influences directly their risk perception. This risk perception influences directly the tourist’s involvement in trip planning, specifically information seeking before and during the trip. Tourists’ risk perception and involvement finally influences their safety concern. Discussion centres on the implications of this model for both theory and tourism management strategies. Last, recommendations are proposed to tourism service and destination managers and promoters regarding ways to deal with terrorism and tourists’ safety concerns.
  • The impact of using non-media information sources on the future use of mass media information sources: The mediating role of expectations fulfillment
Publication . Seabra, Cláudia; Abrantes, José Luís; Lages, Luis Filipe
An empirical study of 350 tourists reveals that using non-media information sources for planning tourist trips influences expectations fulfillment. The use of non-media information sources also has a direct impact on the future use of mass media information sources for future tourist trip planning, as well as an indirect impact through expectations fulfillment. More specifically, the main determinants of expectations fulfillment of local infrastructure are commercial brochures, travel agents and internet; expectations fulfillment of entertainment structures is affected by institutional brochures, travel agents and the internet; future use of mass media sources is influenced by expectations fulfillment of local infrastructure and entertainment structures; this factor is also influenced by past use of institutional brochures and the internet. Discussion centers on the implications of this model to theory and managerial development of tourism and services strategies. Directions for future research are also presented.
