- Creation of non-linear storytelling as a tool for learning foreign languages in higher education in PortugalPublication . Costa, Ana Maria; Costa, Cristina Amaro Da; Coutinho, Emília; Oliveira, Isabel; Pereira, José; Lopez Garcia, Patricia; Gillain, Romain; Amante, Susana; Fidalgo, Susana; Relvas, Susana; Delplancq, VéroniqueEm 2019/20, nasceu, sob as restrições da COVID-19, o projeto Stepping up to Global Challenges: Empowering Students across the World.
- Developing knowledge of prospective primary teachers about mathematics teaching by the use of a multimedia casePublication . Menezes, Luís; Costa, Ana MariaThis study aims to understand the potential of a multimedia case in mathematics education for developing prospective teachers' knowledge of inquiry-based mathematics teaching and instructional communication that supports it. The multimedia case called "Cube with stickers" was developed in the P3M project - Professional Practices of Mathematics Teachers, by Helia Oliveira, Ana Paula Canavarro and Luis Menezes. The multimedia case combines several artifacts, such as videos from a primary school mathematics classroom, audio recordings of interviews with the teacher, lesson plan, mathematical tasks, students’ responses, class verbal interactions and theoretical texts, to represent an inquiry-based mathematics teaching practice. The study took place in the context of a pre-service training course entitled "Mathematical Communication", which is located in the final year of an undergraduate course that qualifies students to enter a professional master's degree program for prospective primary school teachers. In this study, prospective teachers (N=15) participated, most of them female, aged between 20 and 23. Considering the intended objective, the study applied a qualitative methodology, and the data were obtained from the following sources: (i) students' answers to questions posed through the multimedia case: and (ii) written reflections (both were conducted in groups of 2/3 students). The results show that the multimedia case contributed to the growth of students' knowledge about inquiry-based mathematics teaching, the conceptualization of communication that supports it, and about the teacher's actions and communication styles.
- Foreign language skills: a challenge for the economyPublication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa, Ana Maria; Oliveira, Ana Maria; Amante, Susana; Oliveira, Isabel; Abrantes, José Luís; Pato, Maria Lúcia; Amaral, Odete; Fidalgo, SusanaAwareness of the fact that multilingualism opens doors to new markets and new business opportunities is not an original phenomenon, but the various works produced with a view to its being acknowledged are still little publicized and granted little practical use also. Showing mastery of communicative skills in several foreign languages is always valuable for the market economy, not only in terms of sales and marketing, but also in order to reach new target groups and establish lasting strategic relationships. The purpose of this article is to provide a general overview of the studies carried out in this context, focusing in particular on aspects such as the increasingly obvious relationship between in force language practices of a diversified nature and the proper functioning of businesses. Equally important is the mastery of language skills, seen as an important driving force of cross-border cooperation, as well as the development of an emotional culture within the business world, propitious to the implementation of efficient language management strategies, which are clearly beneficial inasmuch as the market economy is concerned.
- Foreign languages and employability: a complex relationship. Case study in the region of Viseu (Portugal)Publication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa, Ana Maria; Oliveira, Ana Maria; Amante, Susana; Abrantes, José Luís; Pato, Lúcia; Amaral, Maria Odete; Relvas, Susana; Fidalgo, SusanaThe challenges of today's societies when it comes to employability and to the reality of the current labour market are more and more delicate and diversified. One of the major commitments we expect from higher education is to prepare its students to face this kind of complexity, understanding its nuances and having the capacity to adapt quickly to situations which are common in companies’ lives. From this perspective, the assessment of the impact that the mastery of FL (foreign languages) among our students can have on the different business sectors becomes paramount. It involves reorganising the work carried out with the students during their academic path and raising awareness of future professionals so they may understand the importance of obtaining and mastering communicative skills in foreign languages that will provide them with the right tools to ensure an effective response to the requirements they will have to meet when they apply for a job. The close connection that exists between higher education institutions and the business world also allows the companies to realize that they should (re)think their recruitment policy in order to take into account the importance of foreign languages. Bearing this in mind, the project "Foreign Languages and Employability" (FLE), that will be presented in this article, started in January 2017, at the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (IPV), in Portugal. It focuses on creating a closer relationship with the local business community in order to understand its needs regarding foreign languages. The aim of the project is to strengthen the more practical aspects of the students’ education to ensure the graduates’ employability and a successful professional development. Data collection is carried out through the analysis of job offers, through the replies given to online surveys and through semi-structured interviews. The project includes representatives of the different IPV schools (Agrarian, Education, Health, Technology and Management) working in different sectors of the institution.
- Graphic humor to promote mathematics learningPublication . Menezes, Luís; Costa, Ana MariaThis paper presents an exploratory study, under development in Portugal, in which one intends to understand the role that mathematical tasks based on graphic humor (comic strips) can play in the learning of Mathematics, in particular, in the written communication, of students at the end of primary education (4th and 6th grades). For this purpose, two classes were chosen, in which mathematical tasks, based on graphic humor, were proposed, and students were encouraged to write about them. The study followed a qualitative methodology and data collection took place from: (i) task resolutions; and (ii) field notes. To analyse the impact of mathematical tasks based on graphic humor in the written communication of students, we consider: (i) Appreciation of the task's graphic humor; (ii) understanding and solving the task; and (iii) construction, organization and consistency of the text. The results of the study reveal that mathematical tasks based on graphic humor are welcomed by young students, who appreciate humor. Students respond to the request to produce written texts, which describe the comic strips, and solve with enthusiasm the mathematical problems present in the situations. Mathematical writing, well-structured and using mathematical language consistently, is decisive to promote reasoning, develop communication skills and for learning mathematics.

- Semiotic Representations in The Learning of Rational Numbers by 2nd Grade Portuguese StudentsPublication . Viseu, Floriano; Pires, Ana Luísa; Menezes, Luís; Costa, Ana MariaThe use of different registers to represent mathematical concepts enhances understanding. For example, rational numbers can assume pictorial, symbolic and natural language representations and this kind of change improves learning. Based on these assumptions, a teaching experiment for the learning of rational numbers by 2nd grade students was conducted, so as to allow for an understanding of how semiotic representations contribute to the learning of rational numbers, particularly with concern to unit fractions. Using a qualitative methodology and a content analysis of the students' written productions, the study shows a greater use of the pictorial representation register compared to the other types. Students' main difficulties in learning rational numbers are related to the pictorial representation of unit fractions and to an understanding of the concept of fraction itself. Some of these difficulties result from errors such as the misrepresentation of unit fractions in the case of the pictorial register, the association of the concept "half" with multiple unit fractions, the absence of the fraction bar when it comes to the symbolic register, the use of everyday terms to represent fractions when students rely on the natural language register, and the misrepresentation of rational numbers when the graphic register is used.
- Storytelling and digital art as a means to improve multilingual skillsPublication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa, Ana Maria; Costa, Cristina Amaro; Coutinho, Emília; Oliveira, Isabel; Pereira, José; Lopez Garcia, Patricia; Gillain, Romain; Amante, Susana; Fidalgo, Susana; Relvas, SusanaThe use of storytelling and digital art as tools to understand a migrant family’s life path will be in the center of an innovative methodology that will ensure the acquisition of multilingual skills and the development of plurilingual awareness, reinforcing the various dimensions of language (aesthetic and emotional, in addition to cognitive), in a creative, collaborative and interdisciplinary work environment. This is especially important among students who are not likely to receive further language training. It is not yet clear how teachers can explore multilingual experiences of learners, both in terms of language learning dimensions but also related with the multiple cognitive connections and representations, as well as to the awareness of language diversity. The JASM (Open window onto the world: foreign languages, multimodal creativity and pedagogical innovation in higher education) project involves a group of students of the 1st cycle in Media Studies, from the School of Education of Viseu, who will work using photography, digital art and cultural communication, collecting information pertaining to diversified cultural and linguistic contexts of the city of Viseu (Beira Alta, Portugal), both in French and English, centered on a tradition or ritual of a migrant family. Based on an interview, students write the story (in French and English) of the life of migrants and use photography to highlight the most relevant aspect of the migrant’s family life. Using as a starting point an object associated with religion, tradition or a ritual, students create an animated film, in both languages. This approach will allow the exploration of culture and digital scenography, integrating in an innovative interdisciplinary pathway, digital art, multilingual skills and multicultural awareness. Students’ learning progress and teacher roles are assessed during this process, using tests from the beginning to the end of the project.
- The contribution of foreign languages in the development of enterprises: a review of literaturePublication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa, Ana Maria; Oliveira, Ana Maria; Amante, Susana; Oliveira, Isabel; Abrantes, José Luís; Pato, Lúcia; Amaral, Odete; Fidalgo, SusanaForeign languages have been the subject of research due to their importance as a means of communication. In fact, the competitiveness of companies is, nowadays, influenced in part by the communication resulting from their contact with companies from different countries, which requires a thorough knowledge of the language of these countries. On the other hand, for the success and progression of workers, it is crucial they acquire and develop foreign language skills. In this context, there have been multiple efforts by the European Commission to promote language learning in Europe and worldwide. In fact, over the past few years, several studies have demonstrated the need of companies to value foreign language skills among workers and collaborators. Multilingualism becomes, therefore, increasingly fundamental to the growth of the economic power of companies, and the competence in foreign languages can be the key factor to enter the labour market. Thus, the present study aims to understand the importance of foreign languages in the development of enterprises and their workers. The research question underlying the review of literature is: “What is the perception of companies regarding the importance of foreign languages for their economic progression and for their workers? To answer this research question, a review of the literature was conducted taking into consideration documents, reports and other secondary sources. For the collection of scientific evidence, research was carried out in the following databases: Science Direct from Elsevier; PubMed; B-on; Google Scholar and in the RCAAP portal. We used as descriptors of our search the following terms: industry, foreign language, multilingualism, higher education, employment, enterprise, among others.
