Publication . Fonseca, SMSR; Branca Carvalho, Ana; Guia, Ana; Menezes, Nídia; Silva, Tatiana
  • Seasonality mitigation strategies - The case of the Douro Museum
Publication . Fernandes, Didiana; Vieira, Isabel; Cardoso, Fernando; Guia, Ana; Rodrigues, Ana Paula
Seasonality covers various sectors of economic activity, from primary to tertiary, being tourism, specifically in this study, culture and museums, very affected by this phenomenon. In a way, this constraint is predictable in this sector, and this predictability may allow the anticipation of supply strategies that can counteract this manifestation and stimulate the stability of demand throughout the year. Examples include market variation, pricing policy and the experience provided, whereby promotion should reflect distinct activity and event packages. This research was conducted as a starting point to help combat the seasonality evident in the Douro Museum located in the Alto Douro Region. An exploratory case study combining qualitative research methods was conducted to deepen the understanding of this complex phenomenon. We hope that this research reveals the importance of the enlargement of innovative and transversal cultural tourism products, in the planning and development of tourism in Alto Douro and, in particular, in the Douro Museum, facing the so called low season in tourism.
  • The Cost Per Patient in a Long-Life Unit and Maintenance.
Publication . Fonseca, Susana; Duarte, Filipe
With the increase in average life expectancy, care for the chronically ill has become an important area in the context of health services. Cost accounting in the health care area is proved to be fundamental as an information tool for decision making, in a sector where managers are increasingly encouraged to provide more and better care at lower prices. With the creation of the National Network of Integrated Continuous Care (NNICC), it is the Long Term Care and Maintenance Units (LTCMUs) that receive more dependent patients, in need of comfort care and palliative actions. There are studies that ensure that the implementation of a palliative model reduces costs and makes the management and use of human and material resources more efficient. It is a quantitative and descriptive study, of retrospective character, whose general objectives were: to develop a comparative study between the practices in use in the Institution; to standardize monitoring strategies; to propose a health management model that takes into consideration the reduction of suffering and the efficiency of resources. The last 30 days of users’ lives were analyzed, in terms of resources used. We calculated a daily co-participation value per user higher than the co-participated value. We concluded that the financing due to LTCMU does not take into account the real needs of users, requiring institutions to allocate human resources and materials higher than the co-funded.

  • SHARING CULTURE THROUGH TOURISM - DOURO VALLEY STORYING TELLING
Publication . Carvalho, Ana Branca; Bonito, Álvaro
Nowadays one of the purposes of Portugal is identifying and exploring the art of living together. More and more sharing different cultures with storying telling is our main purpose. Culture and heritage are often the reason for travel associated to storying telling. In the north of Portugal, there is a famous river - DOURO. The Douro landscape reflects its ancient and deep connection with the culture of wine, creating a picture of Man and Nature working side by side in search of the perfect wine. As this conference aims, the culture is the entangling web of symbols, sounds, rituals, rites and practices by which we become persons and by which we can grow. Lifestyle typically reflects: an individual's attitude, a way of life, values, stories or world view. During the Roman period, particularly following the 1st century A.D., the wine culture advanced rapidly, leaving traces of stone tanks and wine cellars in various archaeological sites in the region. The Douro wines have ancient roots and they have evolved over many years into this liquid delicacy that nowadays delights our taste buds. Drinking a glass of Port Wine is like drinking a glass of history itself, the history of this region governed by wine. A Valley full of history…and stories!!

Publication . Teixeira, Helena; Monteiro, Carlos M.F.; Soares, João Oliveira; Meireles, Ana

    Publication . Fragata, A.; Munõz, P.
The behaviour of the large corporate banking customers when selecting the main bank and the level of their bank loyalty, are subjects that haven´t been much investigated in previous studies. Most of Portuguese large companies in our sample work with more than 5 banks and there is a positive relation between the size of the company and the number of banks used. The competition in this bank segment is fierce, so it´s important to investigate the selection of the main bank. The data showed that Banking Loyalty for large corporate banking customers depends on Perceived Service Quality, which in turn is one factor construct explained by the variety of products, reliability and by the interpersonal relationship established between the decision maker of the company and the business bank manager. There is no statistical evidence to suggest that the variables Tangibles, Responsiveness and Price conditions are important to predict Perceived Service Quality for large corporate customers. The results of his study can help banks to build a loyalty strategy towards the segment of large corporate customers.

  • Effects of pre- and post-harvest factors on the selected elements contents in fruit juices
    Publication . Paula, F.J.A.; Cruz-Lopes, Luísa; Duarte A.C., A.C.; Fragata, Anabela; Reis, M.A.L
Pre- and post-harvest factors determine the levels of the selected risk elements in100% fruit juices. The juices samples closely followed the Brix international reference values. Fruit juices presented the following order of the elements mean concentrations: cadmium (1.597 μg/l), chromium (2.767 μg/l), lead (20.75 μg/l), nickel (73.37 μg/l), zinc (545.9 μg/l), and iron (1792 μg/l), measured by AAS. The pre-harvest factors (origin, fruit, and agriculture) and the post-harvest factors (blending, packaging, conservation, pasteurisation, and process) were evaluated according to the manufacturers information and were correlated with the elements concentrations of fruit juices. A strong relationship was detected between the fruit species used for the juice production (i.e. pre-harvest factor) and their elements concentrations. Furthermore, multiple correspondence analysis was used for reducing the data dimension by grouping the factors. The zinc concentration was detected as a potential proxy for the identification of the fruit juices manufacturing process.
