  • Using Digital Tools to Innovate in Higher Education
Publication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa, Ana Maria; Pereira, José; Gillain, Romain; Fidalgo, Susana
This chapter explores the evolving role of pedagogical innovation in foreign language (FL) classes for media studies undergraduates at the School of Education (ESEV) of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (Portugal). It highlights the transformation of digital tools, initially seen as “icebreakers,” into powerful aids for active methodologies, fostering both hard and soft skills essential for contemporary society and the job market. Teachers commonly integrate online applications, online platforms, and social networks to enhance FL learning. The narrative delves into challenges faced by teachers and students amid constant societal changes. The text emphasizes skills development, improvements over traditional methods, encountered difficulties, and the dynamics within the teaching-learning process. One relies upon gamification as a tool in FL classes, so as to look into its potential to contribute to the systematic exploration of successful educational innovations supported by digital tools in higher education, providing a foundation for future research.
  • The value of historical knowledge through challenging mathematical tasks
Publication . Menezes, Luís; Costa, Ana Maria
Learning mathematics does not simply mean acquiring/developing a set of content knowledge. It also means being able to solve problems, think mathematically and communicate ideas with others. If we think about the mathematics taught to prospective mathematics teachers, the study of the nature of mathematical knowledge, mathematical processes and their historical development is fundamental to their future teaching practice. To achieve this goal, we designed a formative experience in which were proposed challenging, historically framed mathematical tasks to prospective mathematics teachers who teach in the early years (Kindergarten and Primary). In this setting, the study aims to understand how challenging mathematical tasks, which bear upon historical context, contributed to student learning in terms of understanding: the nature of mathematics; the historical development of mathematical knowledge and the processes by which it is developed; mathematical concepts and their modes of representation. The study applies a qualitative and interpretive methodology with the participation of 45 prospective teachers who recently enrolled in the undergraduate programme. The data comes from student resolutions, individual reflections, observations and field notes. The results reveal that as a corollary to working with challenging mathematical tasks framed historically, students have developed their knowledge of mathematics and the nature of mathematical knowledge. They understand the value of problem solving towards an improvement of their historical knowledge and in the development of some fundamental mathematical concepts taught in the initial school years, such as number, operation, regularity, geometric objects.
  • Innovative student-centred strategies in higher education: na experience of active foreign language learning
Publication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa Lopes, Ana Maria; Pereira, José; Fidalgo, Susana
To be innovative, the chosen methodological framework in higher education must encompass strategies centred on the student and his professional expectations linked to his training field, with the objective of also working on vital and adequate transversal skills according to the requirements of the labour market and with better results than traditional practices accomplish/have accomplished. A creative, collaborative and interdisciplinary work environment ensures the acquisition of multilingual skills and the development of plurilingual awareness in the digital age. St-Jean & Dupuis Brouillette (2021) show that, thanks to pedagogical activation, the student effectively engages in his learning, progressing thanks to his ideas and their fulfilment. In project-based learning, the student must invest in developing a project, a dynamic strategy that requires collaborative work, the use of technologies and the creation of artefacts. The teacher’s role is to supports learning. The experience presented focuses on the learning of foreign languages through project pedagogy, using digital tools available mainly on android, tablet and computer equipment with undergraduate Media Studies students of the School of Education in Viseu (Portugal), in order that they may acquire skills in French and English for specific purposes. Students work on a project in the two foreign languages using strategies and skills specific to their future professional field. The methodology is presented and discussed, as well as the difficulties encountered and the results obtained, both from the point of view of the student and that of the teacher. Current research results tend to show that the use of active learning methodologies in the context of collaborative work, compared to traditional strategies, can increase student motivation and autonomy. They promote the interactive process among students and between them and the teachers, facilitating the acquisition of knowledge and skills as far as foreign languages are concerned. Our objective is to show the path followed by students and teachers, to describe the evolution of learning, with its positive aspects, stumbling blocks and difficulties, and to open up new ways of reflecting on the foreign language teaching/learning process in higher education, based on an experience carried out with students at this particular level. The conclusions taken highlight the need for forthcoming work projects in this area.
  • Active foreign language learning practices in higher education: the perspectives of the actors
Publication . Delplancq, Véronique; Costa Lopes, Ana Maria; Pereira, José; Fidalgo, Susana
The digital age and Generation Z are key features within the current panorama of teaching-learning practices in higher education and drive innovative student-centred strategies, oriented towards the reality of the labour market. The article describes an experience of pedagogical activation carried out through project-based learning using digital tools, with undergraduate Media Studies students of the School of Education in Viseu (Portugal), towards the acquisition of skills in French and English, during the academic year 2021-2022. The objective was to renew teaching practices, so as to foster greater student motivation on the part of forthcoming media professionals, by enhancing their competences and confidence with concern to spoken and written interaction within the context of foreign languages for specific purposes. The dynamics of learning combined with authentic contexts and digital tools, encourages teachers to rethink their methodology and objectives, in order to be more innovative. One accounts for the chosen strategy and the various steps followed, evaluates the path of both students and teachers, analyses the benefits, the drawbacks and the impact in terms of acquired skills and concludes with reflections for forthcoming work projects.
  • The Virtual Art Lab: Art Teaching in the Metaverse
Publication . Sousa, Catarina Carneiro de; Figueiredo, Sofia; Souto-e-Melo, A. L.
This chapter discusses the art learning experience in Metaverse, the virtual art lab, conducted entirely online. The authors aim to understand the potentialities of mediated art teaching. It analyses two art projects carried out by higher education students, The Virtual Garden of Time and [D]Utopia, where virtual environments and avatars were designed in a 3D simulator. The process of learning and designing artworks is considered, and a student survey was analyzed, in order to determine advantages and limitations of using creative collaborative environments in art teaching. The authors found that the Metaverse can be an excellent opportunity for students to develop creative, technical, conceptual, and collaborative skills.
  • Looking into Foreign Languages and Multimodal Creativity as a Tool for Pedagogical Innovation in Higher Education: The JASM Project - Open Window onto the World
Publication . Costa Lopes, Ana Maria; Costa, Cristina Amaro Da; Coutinho, Emília; Oliveira, Isabel; Pereira, José; Gillain, Romain; Amante, Susana; Fidalgo, Susana; Relvas, Susana; Delplancq, Véronique
The innovation of pedagogical practices is a challenge currently faced by higher education, in which the student is the main actor in the learning process. The aim of this project is to develop collaborative work, using multimodality in communication, adapted to the professional context, as a strategy to foster the learning of foreign languages. The JASM project ([Janela aberta sobre o mundo].Open Window onto the World: Foreign Languages, Multimodal Creativity and Pedagogical Innovation in Higher Education), developed by a multidisciplinary team, rests upon an active learning dynamic based on projects, through the creation of digital narratives focused on the linguistic and cultural diversity of a city in Beira Alta, Viseu. The use of several action-research approaches allowed students of the undergraduate course in media studies at the School of Education in Viseu to develop a multilingual and multicultural awareness, in a creative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary environment.
  • O Tríptico de Berg, memória e resistência numa experiência artística virtual
Publication .
  • Plastic Food Packaging: Perceptions and Attitudes of Portuguese Consumers about Environmental Impact and Recycling
Publication . Macena, Morgana; Carvalho, Rita; Cruz-Lopes, Luísa; Guiné, Raquel
The use of plastics for packaging has some advantages, since they are flexible and inexpensive. However, most plastics are of single use, which, combined with low recycling or reuse ratios, contributes substantially to environmental pollution. This work is part of a project studying the habits of Portuguese citizens concerning plastic food packaging and focuses on aspects related to sustainability. The survey was carried out via an online questionnaire about sustainability, recycling, and knowledge of the effects of plastic materials or their residues on the environment. The results were obtained based on a statistical analysis of the data. The participants tend to think about the negative impact of plastic packages on the environment; 39% sometimes do not buy plastic; and 30% try to look for alternatives. A substantial fraction, 81%, support the avoidance of plastic utensils and reduction in the use of plastic bags. Most participants have a good knowledge of recycling and strongly agree with the use of recycled materials, and 87% of respondents practice separation of different types of waste for recycling. Changing plastic consumption habits has not been an easy task. Nevertheless, it is expected that society will increasingly move toward sustainable habits, questioning its actions and considering their impact on the environment.
  • Meta_Body: Virtual Corporeality as a Shared Creative Process
Publication . Sousa, Catarina Carneiro de
This chapter discusses the Meta_Body participatory art project. Initiated in a collaborative virtual environment and in a “real life” art exhibition, it now continues in the metaverse creative flux. Meta_Body focuses on two aspects: first, the avatar as body/language, open to experimentation and potency; second, avatar building as a shared creative process and as aesthetical experience. Through the practice of avatar creation, distribution, embodiment and transformation, the artists aim to understand the processes of virtual corporeality constitution: to question the role of the body in virtual environment, its importance in engaging with the world and in self-expression, and explore its metaphorical aspects. The method used to implement this project is a shared creative process, in which multiple subjects come to be authors along different phases of the project. Through the embodiment and transformation of avatars, the artwork's aesthetical experience becomes a creative process.
